Diaper Rash - Monrovia, CA

My 6 month old son has his first case of diaper rash, or at least what I believe is diaper rash. I've tried all the diaper rash ointments on the market and none of them are helping. I give him "naked time" every day so that he can air out, even before the diaper rash appeared. The rash looks almost like hives. He doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, but I've stopped using baby wipes just in case. I don't want to irritate it. Does anybody have any remedies beside over the counter ointments? Could this be something other than diaper rash? He is exclusively breastfed, could it be something I'm eating?

There is a website called earth mama angel baby that sells organic skincare for babies. They have a diaper rash salve that is olive oil based, and it works better than anything I have ever used in the past! It is an all purpose salve. You can use it for cuts, burns, scrapes, razor bumps, and especially diaper rash. Organic products are great, and I have had a lot of success with them (as far as skin care goes). They are thalate free, paraben free, and toxin free. They are very soothing and easy on young, sensitive skin. I highly recommend it. The salve comes in a jar and is called "angel baby bottom balm," and you can buy it at www.earthmamaangelbaby.com. I am not affiliated with this company, I promise! I came across them when I was experiencing a similiar problem as you are dealing with now. I just love their products:)

sounds funny, but it could be a yeast infection. If its not going away with ointments and things, most likely is a yeast infection. Its not uncommon for babys to get it. They are in diapers 24/7. There is a cream that your pediatrician can perscribe that takes it away in a few days.
For any other diapers rash though I really recomend Calmoseptine. It works so great and clears up anything within a day. Good luck!

At some point diaper rash becomes a fungus. My son's bum was as sore as you described. I called my ped and the nurse practioner said use an anti fungal like lotrimon (it's at the market next to athlete's feet medicine) Every other diaper change put whatever you are currently using and then trade off with the lotrimon. My son's diaper rash was gone in 3 days, but she said to use it for 10 days. It has not reoccured. Good luck. You could also try a little baking soda in the bath water. Changes the pH which may make it inhospitable for the fungus.

when my son had a really, really bad diaper/heat rash. my mother-in-law suggested a few days of giving him a warm bath with a little baking soda in the water, and putting corn starch on it afterwards. the corn starch can get messy when it's wet, but it worked wonders.

if it isn't a yeast infection, then it would be an allergy to something you ate. My daughter started to get them about a year old, but her's clear up in a day or so, with the otc creams. talk to your doctor first though. i also have heard to put breast milk on it...
good luck

Just last week I took my 9 month old daughter to her doctor for the same thing. She has a rash for weeks, that I couldn't get rid of, and it was turning into sores that would look aweful!
He said it was fungle (yeast infection) you might have heard of this kind of diaper rash. He prescribed her a anti-fungus powder, which I believe comes in a lotion as well. He said to blow dry her butt after every change. It's important to make sure they are completely drive because once you put the powder and a barrier (diaper rash cream) it locks in the driness or moisture, if you didn't dry well enough.
Take your son to his doctor, they will give you and RX for either a powder or cream and he'll be feeling better in a few days!
My daughter looked better after just a few changes!

Once you get the rash cleared up I would recommend switching from the plastic typical diapers to the nature baby brand. They are not made of plastic and therefore they breathe allowing air to get to the baby's skin! They can be found at Target only so far.

I would suggest seeing your pediatrician. It could be a yeast infection or something else that requires more than over the counter remedies.
Good luck.

Hi A.!

When she was 1 month old, my now-7 month daughter had a rash that wouldn't leave and the doctor told us to use A & D (we were using zinc oxide based products, including Burts Bees and Butt Paste and Desitin) and the A & D worked. He also told us to stop using the wipes and to just use a washcloth and water. We did that too and her rash went away.

More recently she had another rash and it turned out to be ringworm. The doctor told us to use an over the counter antifungal cream (which is used for athletes foot). This is a persistent rash that takes several weeks, and it's been about 3 weeks so far and seems to be responding.

Finally, a friend of mine has a 7 month old with horrible rash and had to change the brand of diaper- she switched to a diaper without chlorine; I think she uses the Target brand Natural diapers and the rash has gone away.

Definitely check with your doctor to rule out anything more serious.

I agree with the other Moms to call your Doc just to be sure it isn't something more serious. If it is diaper rash, then we're big fans of Triple Paste. It's a bit more expensive but works wonders. Good luck. I hope it clears up quickly.

one thing that works for my daughter, is brown flour. weird i know, i didn't believe it my self, but if u take flour, brown it in a pan with no oil, wait for it to cool, and apply with every diaper change the rash will start to heal that day if not the next. a good friend passed in on to me, and i was quite skeptical until i tried it and the next morning my daughter had practically no rash left, if you keep the flour in the freezer it also helps soothe any pain when applied.

thats no diaper rash if it has lasted over three days its a yeast infection (babies can get it in their daiper area and their necks) my daughter had a yeast infection that we didnt even know she had i thought it was just a bad daiper rash. her dr prescribes nistatin cream (you can by over the counter yeast infection cream) which could make it worse because it is strong. just apply a thin layer a couple of times a day and it should go away.

My son's diaper rashes will almost ALWAYS go into a YI. I know this because YI's stay red but turn bumpy and always go up under his little nutts too...so painful for him. The Lotromin (Jock itch cream) works but is pricey for that little tube. I called the doc and she called me in an Rx. It's a stronger formula, bigger tube and just $10...lasts me about 3 YI's or so instead of one $10 drug store tiny tube that lasts maybe one YI.

If you use a damp cloth to wipe him instead of wipes, toss it in the laundry asap. YI's spread quick and are resillient. If you keep using or touching items with the YI cooties on it, you'll just keep re-infecting him. And ofcourse, wash your hands after changing him aswell. The YI's usually last about 3 days. Once he's cleared up and looks like he's done I still put Vaseline or diaper rash cream on my guy as a barrier for a couple days after just to make sure the YI -OR- the diaper rash don't come back.

I HATE YI's...UGH!

Good luck!
