My older son, who is now 4, never really had diaper rash, but my 20 month old son gets it frequently. It is sometimes difficult to get rid of. I have used the Malox on a cotton ball that someone else suggested when it gets really read and raw, but I mixed it with liquid Benadryl. I also recently discovered Boudreaux's Butt Paste. I love it! It also isn't messy, doesn't have a bad scent, and washes off my hands easily. Good luck!

I used bag balm which is has been used for cows sore utters. I put it on my sons bum and its the only thing that works. It actually seals his raw skin and protects it. It makes the poops slide right off without making his poor red bum worse. He's three and when he's sick with the runs I still use it. Also you can get a oatmeal bath from the health food store for him to soak in, that can help too. Also let him go diaper less when you can to let the air get to it. That can help too. Good luck!

Try a powder called CALDESENE it is in a pink container. I get it at the Stop&Shop in the baby section. It has zinc oxide and talc and sticks to little bums well and keeps them dry. It worked great on my oldest daughter maybe not as good on my youngest but I think each little bottom is different. Desatin actually seems to sting my youngest. What works for one dosen't necessarily work for another :) hope this helps. good luck

At my shower I was given a great homemade cream, with the recipe. It was from another mom who had a son with leukemia, and the hospital recommeded this cream for the diaper-like rash caused from the chemo. It works great for my son.

1 part petroleum jelly (vaseline)
1 part lanolin ( I used my leftover Lansinoh that I had from early nursing soreness)
1 part zinc oxide

Just mix it all up in a little tupperware and keep it by the changing table.

Hi there, Are you sure it's just a diaper rash and not a yeast infection? My son had this once and my doctor told me to put a cream such as Vagasil on it instead of the Destin Diaper rash cream we were using and it went away very quickly thereafter. I would advise to call your doctor and describe what it looks like.

Good luck!

I'm a huge fan of "Butt paste". you can find it at Walmart, or Target. I first heard about it on Oprah(of all places!)It's gotton popular and now at these big stores.

But, if the rash is really bad - give it as much air time as possible and always make sure it is completely dry before applying any ointment or a diaper. I would wrap my kids in a towel at a nap time just to let their little bums breathe.

If there is a ring around the anus, or it seems really persistent - you may have an allergy on your hands. Both of my kids were/are diaper rash prone. My daughter would clear up with the butt paste, but with my 3 month old the rash persisted. It turns out he is allergic to dairy and we continue to discover sensitivities. The first sign is a rash!

good luck. It's so hard to see them so uncomfortable!

Have you tried Lotrimin cream? It's for athlete's foot but some diaper rashes are a yeast infection and Lotrimim will clear it up if it's yeast. Also, give his bottom some air time. Put him on a towel on the floor in case of an accident and let his bottom get some fresh air.

My daughter would get a horrible rash from using Huggies diapers...perhaps since little to no air could circulate in there (very form fitting and adsorbent). Nothing would get rid of the rash since it was a yeast infection (I tried all the diaper creams and even tried Neosporin!). Very raw, lots of little red dots all over and it would "blossom" very quickly. Our pediatrician told my to get Lotrimin cream in the tube (anti-fungal) a put a very thin amount on the rash. In just a day it would be almost 100% better. It took me a little while to figure out that it was the diapers that did that to her, but once I changed to Pampers, she was fine. I suppose I should have known that some products (especially those that brag about "no leak systems") would cause the rash, since I get yeast infections from Always pads. No other products gives me that, only Always (and of course they do work the best for period leaks...). Oh well...live and learn!!

My daughter is 18 months and she rarely gets diaper rash, but when she does it is awful. Our pediatrician recommended buying a generic antifungal cream (.5% or 1%) and using it twice a day on the rash. I know this sounds strange, but it works. I usually use it in the am and in the pm. I put a little on the rash area let it set in and then apply a non medicated lotion, I use bag balm, that acts as a barrier between the diaper and the skin.

Hello,
My daughter just turned one and she has had a few really bad diaper rashes. Her daycare teacher told me to try Triple Paste. It is a bit more expensive than Balmex and Desitin but it works like a charm. I used it before she went to bed and by the next morning her rash was about 97% cleared up. It is amazing !!!
Another option is Butt Paste. Also more expensive, but from what I have heard it works very quickly.

Good luck.

A few baths with cornstarch mixed in over the course of a day or so, then dry VERY thoroughly each time, put hydrocortizone cream on the rash instead of diaper cream, and another handful of plain, dry cornstarch over the hydrocortizone. Watch carefully for poop & pee, change diapers vigilantly. WORKS LIKE A CHARM EVERYTIME! (Unless it's a yeast infection. If you do this and the rash doesn't subside in a day or so, check with your pediatrician to be sure it's not a yeast infection.)

Are you sure it is simply a diaper rash and not a yeast infection? Has he been on antibiotics at all lately? It is a place that is warm and wet, ideal for yeast. They use an antifungal cream for a yeast infection, like a nystatin (prescription) or a cream used for athelete's foot, can't remember the exact name doctor told me.

If bottom is really bad, you may have to let him go without in order to let the air help his bottom. Good luck. Hope he feels better.

I agree, I could be food related. My daughter had an awful diaper rash for over a month and no matter what we did, it wouldn't go away. Her pediatrician prescribed creams, but the rash would come back as soon as we stopped using it. It's definitely frustrating. We ended up taking her to see a naturopath who suggested we modify her diet. It worked wonderfully and since then she really hasn't had any rashes besides when we tried reintroducing the foods that we had taken away.
It could also be something simple like maybe your son is having a reaction to diapers or wipes. There can be a lot of ingredients in those than can cause skin irritation.
Good luck!

My son was very sensitive when he was first born and got bad diaper rash. We tried the desitin and butt paste I was given at some showers. But neither worked. My doctor recommended we use A&D Ointment. It's kind of like a vasolin consistency and it worked awesome with my son when he was first born. I think it creates a barrior between the skin and any moisture. I think some other responses are correct though; it could be a yeast infection which is why you might want to run it by your doctor. But if it's not the A&D should clear it up in a day. Good luck!

Hey there, P.!

Clearly, you have received a huge number of responses. I have found that you have to keep trying various things until you find whatever works for you.

Both of my daughters have had rashes, and neither one was/is solved the same way. Our first daughter has very sensitive/delicate skin. There was no product that ever truly worked well for her. The only thing that seemed to help was if she didn't have a bowel movement for a while, the urine in her diaper actually soothed the rash and it would go away quicker than when we tried to treat it. That means that if we put cream on her, and she was only wet, she really didn't improve. But, if we didn't put the cream on and she pooped, we had to change her nearly immediately or the rash would bleed within minutes. So it was a delicate balance to try to figure out when she would be pooping so that we could put cream on to protect her vs. when to let her go without to let the urine treat the rash.

With #2, I use Butt Paste and it works very well for her. I only use it when she has a rash, and again, she doesn't poop at night, so I don't put anything on her and the urine helps to clear any rash in the evening.

Good luck. I hope that this helps some.

Sounds like a diaper rash with yeast-you might want to check with your pediatrican on recommended treatment. I use a diaper cream with tea tree oil in it that works well. Over the counter antifungal creams work as well.

Also, getting some air time with out a diaper helps and soaks in the tub.

Try Earth's best diaper ointment http://www.jason-natural.com/products/earths_best.php

I've read really good reviews on it by other parents. I've also read that many diaper rash prone babies had everything cleared up when switched to Seventh Generation diapers or gDiapers, and that's not from advertising but from parent forums, give it a try. Many babies are allergic to the chlorine in regular diapers, it is quite irritating.

I'm sure all of these suggestions do the trick... but here is mine :) My son (who is finally starting to poop on the potty - yay!!) would get horrid diaper rash!! So sad! We would get him out of those poopie diapers right away, and when possible, have him soak in the tub for a while. Often it'd be hard for him to sit in the water, it would be uncomfortable at first, but it was okay once he was in... So after soaking, we'd have him go nude for a bit (the air is good for a sore bottom), then we would LOAD him up with creamy desitin b/f putting on his diaper! Esp before bed, that stuff would work wonders! Good luck!

I was in the SAME exact position a few weeks ago with my 3 month old son. I also have an older daughter whose diaper rash responded to Balmex, but Balmex does nothing for my little boy.
The pediatrician said he had a yeast infection and prescribed an antibiotic cream.
That worked initially, but not completely.
Our answer has been a mix of things:
1. No more than 2 baths a week.
2. Use g Diapers. (Check out their web site.)
3. Alternate applying Desitin and Aquaphor each change.
4. I'm breastfeeding... so, I eat lots of yogurt.
5. A baking soda bath if he gets especially sweaty.
Since we've been following these rules, his bum is clear.
Good luck!

P.,

My daughter got diaper rash once at 4 weeks and it was very difficult to get rid of. This is what my doctor recommended and it worked - not over night. The way she described it is that diaper rash is like a bad sunburn it takes time to heal. We still use this regime on my daughter if she get red at all. First NO WIPES! They only dry out the skin and right now they need extra protecting. Instead use oil - baby oil, vegetable oil any oil and a cotton swap. This sound bad but it is actually easy. Then once all the poop is off use a dry cotton ball to wipe the excess oil off. Next use Mallox. I used the square cotton pads you can buy at the store in the cosmetic area and I put the cotton square over the Mallox bottom, put my fingers over the cotton square and shock the bottle. The amount of Mallox on the square is enough. Dab this Mallox on the babies bottom everywhere it is red. Now this needs to dry before you slather on the diaper cream. My doctor said as long as it's NOT A&D it would be fine. I found Balmex was fine.
The other things is that you need to air out the babies bottom. This intails -well for us it did anyway - putting down an old blanket with a plastic bag on it then a towel. I placed my daughter on the towel and stayed right there so I could use cotton balls to wipe up the poop and pee she did as she played there. Not fun but apparently necessary. Now what I do it after I take her diaper off and clean her up I let you lay on the changing table while I play with her til her botton is dry.
This regime isn't an over night magic trick but it does work.

Good luck.

My son has super sensitive skin we couldn't use wipes for his first few months and now at two we still use the sensitive pampers wipes. A warm bath with Mom or Dad always helps and it is relaxing. Definitely if diaper cream doesn't help see the doc before trying the foot creams, you never want to put home remedy's on someone so young. I have also used the old "burnt flour" trick (put good old cooking flour in a frying pan and cook it until it turns brown, cool & use just like any other powder) and that has helped too. Depending on the severity of the rash, her pediatrician can also prescribe an ointment called Vusion, which in my opinion is a miracle ointment!

We just put it on all over anything that begins to look red and it goes away. The best thing, is that A&D can be used for other things too, like burns. Hope he feels better soon!

You have tons of responses and probably found a solution. My twins used to get bad diaper rashes and sometimes had to get a prescription from the doctor for an ointment. I'm not sure what it was. They haven't worn diapers or had the rashes in some time now. I hope it clears up soon as it is so uncomfortable!

This happened to both my kids. It was a yeast infection on the skin and our pedi assured me it happens a lot to babies. Recommend thin layer of Lotrimin with a heavy layer of desitin or another favored diaper ointment over the Lotrimin.

Triple Paste is the only way to go. Either that or try powder for a few days and let the bum get as much air and sun as possible. Good luck, I know how hard it is to see their little tushies so red!

Hi P.! My name is C. and I am Rep with Arbonne International. Not sure if you are familiar with our products, but we have a really great natural baby line. I have used the line on my son since he was 3 and I love it. We are a vegan company so there are no animal products or by/products in our products. THe diaper rash creme is not only good for diaper rash but for insect bites and rashes as well. Please let meknow if I can mail you a sample to try.
Thanks and I hope this helps!! C.

Balmex is OK but for a bad diaper rash Budrauex Butt Paste (sp?) is wonderful. Also when you can let your little one go diaper free for as long as possible in between diapers. We had a diaper rash problem with our son and those two things really made a difference.

Try Desitin Original. All the creamy types and easy wipe-offs don't work as well. If that doesn't work after 2-3 days, or gets worse, it could be a yeast rash, which he would need to be seen by a doctor. It's nothing abnormal at all. Some people hear yeast and think it was something they did. The doctor can prescribe something that will take care of it fast. Good luck!

When my son was just a couple days old his poop was like fire to his poor bum it practically ripped the skin right off. It was such an awful diaper rash. When we went to the Dr's for his appt she said as tough as it is... let it air out as much as possible. A lot of reason why babies get diaper rash is because of constant moisture from having a diaper on all the time. So everytime I changed him I would let him be free for a while.. I use Baby powder with cornstarch daily & it works like a charm for preventing it.. When he starts getting really red ill use the balmex once or twice to get it under control.. but I really swear on plain old cornstarch or Brecks baby powder with cornstarch!

I had the same problem with my daughter. Balmex always worked on my son but not her. I found "CANUS". Some of their products are pricey but the diaper cream is around $6.00 for a large tub that lasts forever!!! It's super thick so a little goes a long way, not to mention that it is made with 40% zinc-oxide as opposed to Balmex which uses 11 or 12%.

Hope this helps! Oh yeah, it's also made with goats milk so it's more natural for baby's skin. Good luck.

Boudreaux's butt paste or Triple Paste works great-or switching up the brand of diapers!
Also try not using baby wipes while the rash is bad. I work at one of the biggest hospital's in Boston and they don't use baby wipes. The ingredients are too toxic according to one of the nurse's-just mild soap and water is what they recommend.

My son use to get awful diaper rashes after pooping as well. My previous daycare provider tipped me to using vaseline (as a barrior) and then sprinkle cornstarch (to absorb moisture). I swear by this now! Good luck!

Hi There,

Every time my son would teeth or get a cold he would get an awful diaper rash. Nothing would help. Then we tried Aveeno diaper cream - it's pricey but within one day we saw HUGE improvements. Now that's all we use and his bumm is very happy! Good luck!

Hi P.,
Is it a rash or could it be a yeast infection? My baby was on medication and got what I thought was a diaper rash but it turned out to look different & worse. it was kind of blistery & shiny and was a yeast infection. If you think is what your baby has tea tree oil in a cream or an anti fungal cream should clear the rash right up! Call your doctor if you want to be sure what type to buy!
Good luck!
