So What Happened?

Hi Moms, thank you so very much for all of your quick responses, my little man is doing a lot better. I was able to use what I already had in the kitchen to help his diarrhea (bananas, applesauce and gerber rice), and I also used the aquaphor for his bottom after the diarrhea subsisded. And I believe the airing out for his little bottom was the real trick for healing his rash; the air hitting his bottom seem to almost heal him instantly. We allowed him to go without his diaper twice a day for at least two hours before applying the aquaphor, but everything worked in conjunction. It took about a full week to see total normalcy again, but it was well worth it, Oh, did I mention he's also teething? Cutting four teeth at the same time, one is almost completely out, the other three are 1/3 visible. Thank you all sooo much again. I'm sure I will be back on the scene again, this site rocks!

My 2 yo had bad diaper rash with some diarrhea. The pediatrician told us this old remedy:

Mix these 3 ingredients to form a paste: 1) Milk of Magnesia (to neutrify the acid from diarrhea) with 2)cornstarch and 3)Auquaphor cream (or can use Tripple Paste).

Apply on the diaper rash. It literally heals the rash w/in the next diaper change. My elderly aunt who always has an opinion on how "they used to do things" whether you want to hear it or not, was amazed by this and actually wrote it down. That was a first!

I used Butt Paste with every diaper change. If he did get a rash which was only occasional I used A+D Ointment first and then the original Desitin. These methods always cleared it up. Good luck.

our doctor said to get the diaper rash medicine with the most zinc oxide, as it would keep the moisture away from the infected bottom. That was Desitin, and it worked really well for our daughter.

Another thing to do is give them Aveeno oatmeal baths and let them run around naked to let their little bums air out.

For the diarrhea, we were always told to do the BRAT diet, bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. It worked really well for our daughter, although she hated the rice cereal and the doc said it was ok to substitute yogurt.

make sure it is not a yeast infection. These don't just go away with regular diaper creams... you have to use a 'yeast cream' that has "clotrimazole" in it. Yes, the kind of yeast creams that women use. This is what our Pediatrician recommends, if it is a yeast infection diaper rash.

Here is a good link:

Diarrhea... is also quite harsh on the bottoms... it is acidic. So wipe him gently, even with just a damp soft paper towel, or wash him off with warm water each time he has a poop of diarrhea.
Don't use soaps... it will probably aggravate it more or make it sore. You can use baby soap or Dove or Cetaphil...

The brand "Burt's Bees- Baby Bee" diaper cream is also good. I like it a lot. It is zinc oxide with other natural ingredients in it. I just get it from my local Long's/CVS store. Many places carry Burt's Bees.

good luck,
Susan

our pediatrician told us to stay away with anything made with petrolium jelly (vaseline) because petrolium jelly actually dries out the skin. Instead he told us to buy Aquaphor (made by Eucerin) and add a little of triple antibiotic ointment and mix well and then apply. Once we did as he said, the rash went away within a day. The triple antibiotic has a numbing effect and the Aquaphor will shield the skin from the diarrhea.

As a precaution, every other day or so, I would apply a little and my kids never got diaper rash again.

Aquaphor is also great on chapped lips. One day, I didn't have chap stick without petrolium jelly/vaseline, nor did i have Aquaphor available and used triple antibiotic and within seconds my lips turned numb.

You don't mention if you are breastfeeding but if you are try breastmilk. Breastmilk is as close to a "cure all" as you can find for babies. I was told once to use breast milk drops in the eye for pink eye. I was very skeptical so researched it online and founds loads of data about the merits of breastmilk in healing diaper rash, pink eye and other ailments. Crazy or not, I tried it for my daughters pink eye (she was 3 months) and it was cleared up within 24 hours after 2 drops of breastmilk! Good luck.

I used Weleda Calendula Diaper Care cream for my son. He had an awful rash and it healed up quickly. It has calendula, as well as zinc oxide. It's natural and lasts a very long time, also.

My son has a rather bad reaction to Zinc Oxide, so I use this old fashioned balm. Unscented it's good for many things(I've posted it here before). Use this with every diaper change to keep his bottom free of moisture.
When my son was little, I let him sit in a cloth diaper loosely pinned and set him down on an oopsie mattress pad. The more airflow, the quicker it heals. Make sure to clean and dry the area thoroughly too. Sometimes a sprinkle of cornstarch helps wick away some of the wetness, but is a bit messy. If it is really bad, the doctor can prescribe an ointment to clear it up quickly.

2 oz organic beeswax
2 oz sweet almond oil or pure olive oil
2 oz coconut oil

Heat on stove until melted, place in heat safe container until cool. Use as needed to soothe. Unscented like this it's very nice on irritated skin.
Scented, it's also a nice balm for the hard working Mama's. Just use any essential oil you like and add it to the liquefied mixture. I have used this on my lil' guy for everything from diaper rash to sore noses.

Pure calendula, with no alcohol is wonderful! I use coconut oil too when they get dry.

Earth Mama Angel Baby sells an awesome Bottom Balm that is all herbal and has zero toxins.

Are you nursing? That's the best for diarrhea. Don't know if you are doing solids because other than applesauce or banana, I don't know what else you are doing.

If he's on formula, you could add a probiotic to his diet or mix it in with any solids you are giving. You said "slight" so you may not really have to do much, just ride it out.

I always had problems with diaper rashes on my son.. I used Desitin.. or what is going to sound gross but works... LARD... yeah His grandparents swear by it.. I didnt believe it either but it works... put some on after his bath right before bed.. and should go away... it could be from the diarrhea.. and the diarrhea could be caused by teething... My doctor always told me to put him on a 'white startch diet' bread..rice..potatoes.. even the rice cereal..try that and see if it works....

I have not found anything as good in the US as the Penaten creme that I brought here from Germany. You can get it in a few places in Chicao. If you happen to have someone in my area close by that can pick it up and bring it to you, I will be happy to share what I have left as my kids have grown out of that stage.
Penaten Creme is a thick creme, that you need very little of, it does not burn the irritated skin, the kids don't mind it and it works wonders. Has been around for so long...
