Diaper Rash Advice

Hi H., My son got really bad diaper rashes as a baby and he ended being allergic to the zinc oxide in diaper rash creams. I used Vaseline or baby powder and they both worked really well.

Bacitracin! You can find it at Longs or any pharmacy over the counter. It works really well for diaper rash & flare-ups. My son is 13.5 months and it has worked so well for us now and in the past.

LOAD on the desitin for the mean time and it should go away...i don't use desitin unless he has a diaper rash and it works when he does...you just have to put A LOT on for the mean time...good luck.

Think diet - why is her poop so irritating ?? maybe she needs more probiotics/yogurt ? is she getting a lot of juice - not good. get off sugar/ acidic foods for a while.
also allergens ? wheat certain fruits and ?? Try vitamin E calendula on her skin

I keep a spray bottle of water at my changing table and use it to clean the urine off her before I wipe her down. Urine contains uric acid which is very irritating. Also try giving her more water during the day to keep her urine from being too concentrated.

Have you spoken with your Doctor about the rash? My DD (now 7) used to get the most HORRIBLE diaper rashes and nothing worked. One day my cousin, who was a nanny, mentioned that it may be a yeast infection. Her son had a similar experience and that was the cause. She suggested using the monistat cream and then topping it with Desitin. She also told me to stay away from cornstarch powder, because it made her son's problems worse. It seems the yeast actually "liked" the cornstarch (think of what happens when you add sugar to the yeast and water when you make bread.) I found a great baby powder from a company called "Little Forest" http://www.littleforest.com/d-powder.aspx that makes powder out of natural clay, no cornstarch. It worked like a charm! She never had a red bottom again. Good Luck!

First of all, you have to check to see if your baby has a food allergy to something. Those types of diaper rash bleed and are really painful. Our first daughter had the worst type of yeast rash where we had to use Monistat for 2 years b/c it kept reoccurring. Here's what I do for each diaper change on my little one: Clean with a fragrance free/alcohol free baby wipe (huggies makes some). Then we use a hair dryer at the lowest setting until there's no moisture. Just to make sure the skin is dry, I also use plain cornstarch. We avoid petroleum products b/c our babies are allergic, since it doesn't allow the skin to breathe. So we use A&D Diaper rash cream. Seems to be the best way for our baby to be diaper rash free. Both my childrin had diaper rash, I found that Welleda Calendula oil and cream did the trick!
Clean and dry the area after change, then useing a cotton pad saturated with the Calendula oil cover the area. Thats when it's really bad, and then top up with the Calendula cream when you are out and about. This worked for me. L.

I have a 4 month old and I used Butt Paste but when the rash is really bad I used Lotrimin. Only a dime size overnight by the next morning it was gone. One of my friends told me that her pediatrician recommended it and it works.

My daughter is now 7 and we still use "Mexsana" for heat rashes she gets occasionally. When she was a baby it was the only thing that soothed and healed her little bottom. In fact she still calls it the "aaaaaaaaah stuff". You can find it at walmart with the foot powders, like gold bond. Says right on the bottle it's for diaper rashes. To top it off it's under $4.
On another note I personally am allergic to tomatoes and had to deal with rashes that were chalked up to baby acne in various places, face and bottom mostly. I was finally able to figure out what the cause was when I was 14, TOMATOES! To this day unless I accidently eat something with tomatoes in it I'm fine. No rashes no break outs.
Look at all the labels!! You will be amazed at how many products have tomatoes in it. Soups especially.
Also watch for fruits (tomatoes are a fruit)with acidic's in it. Pinapple, kiwi, strawberries etc.

I have a friend who's son gets a bad rash everytime she turns around! Lots of fress air, which isn't alwasy practical, but she finally found a diaper rash cream that took it away, in fact, she uses it for other "rashes" in her older kids, too. It's a diaper rash cream by Arbonne. If you would like I can tell you more about it.

When my kids were little nothing over the counter worked. Desitin made the rash worse, I think because the cream kept the heat in. It did work for my friends' babies, but not mine. My Mom told me to try plain old "corn starch" and it worked! I kept a box just for cooking and one for rashes. Just something you could try that you probably have at home...and it's cheap. Also, make sure your diaper wipes do NOT have alcohol in them. Have the baby drink more water and a little less juice, until the rash clears. I even made time during the day to let the baby get air to the area. I really hope this works for you.

Hi, I have 3 kids - 2, 5, and 8. When my oldest was a baby, my friend told me that her son was allergic to Luvs diapers, which is what I was using (I never told her this but I thought that it may be all in her head). Sure enough, when my daughter was born, I still used Luvs to save money, but after multiple diaper rashes, and thinking that I was just not changing her diaper enough, I remembered her comment. I switched to Huggies, and never had another diaper rash. With my 3rd child, I've just always used Huggies and have had no problems.

Burts Bees diaper rash cream and then sprinkle baby powder over the bottom. It really works for me. It took me a long time before I realized how wonerful baby powder is.

My daughter gets a bad diaper rash from time to time. I use this great diaper cream by Weleda called Calendula Diaper Care. I get it at Whole Foods. I only use a little bit and then put original Desitin over it. Another thing I have used in Bag Balm. Just make sure he doesn't have a yeast infection. I never had any luck with Butt Paste. Definitely avoid wipes until it is better. If he is in a lot of pain, the doctor recommended I put baking soda in the bath with warm water and have her sit in it for relief. I'm not sure it did any good though.Is he teething? Teething causes increased saliva which can cause diaper rash. Think about how a drooling baby's face looks.

have you tyride desedent cream or mybe some cadleskinpowder you can gat that at walgreens or walmart thats what workt for my son and doughter

Yes, use an antibacterial cream, but not more than three times a day until it starts looking better and cut it our as soon as you can so your child doesn't get immune to it. I use original Desitine when my daughter has a diaper rash at night. I don't know why the original seems to work better, but it did in my case. My doctor told me to use the antibacteral cream three times a day to avoid an infection. During the day, I rotate the creams on her bottom just in case one seemed to be helping more than another.

Butt Paste... It's the best... I have twin boys... and one has had 2 mild rashes (both while quite sick) and the other... none...

Have your pedi test for yeast... if that's the problem... no paste will cure it.

In the mean time... NO WIPES they sting!!! Take baby to the kitchen sink.. run warm/cool water... the little hose gets everything nice and clean... pat dry. (bleach your sink of there was any poop!)... Then LOTS of Butt paste... Once the rash is gone... always use a good coat of butt paste as a preventative measure. Also, I found the tub (at $16) has a better consitancy than the tube... not sure why... but that's the way it worked...

Our doctor recommended triple paste for our daughter, whose butt was so raw it was starting to crack and bleed. It worked wonders, within a few days it had completely cleared up. Also, we found out she was allergic to the new diapers we were using, so if you have changed brands recently you may want to try using a different kind. The triple paste is expensive, but well worth the investment.
