If he is bleeding, i wouldnt suggest the Lotrimin AF(i used that on my son and it made it MUCH worse) I Love the Dr. Smiths or Triple Paste. They both work great!! i would just load that on and change him as soon as he gets wet!
Hi ladies!
My two year old recently started taking allergy medicine and every time he wakes up in the morning he has BM and his tushy is very irritated, some parts are bleeding. What can I do to make it better? The regular diaper cream is not helping.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

I took care of my neice who had horrible diaper rash with bleeding sores. I found an old wives tale remedy of plain cornstarch. It did hurt her to rub it on or clean it off but most of all it worked wonderfully. I saw immediate results of the irritation going away and once it healed we continued to put a sprinkle on to ward off other bouts.
Lotrimin and Boudreux's butt paste. Works like a charm every time
Wash his hiney with a soap that contains no mineral oil or petrolatum-based products. You can find them at the store (I saw a "naturals" line at HEB) or you can go to www.arbonne.com and get the best I've used. On that note, I use the diaper rash creme they sell, too. It is better than anything I've tried and won't hurt to apply it like some other sticky cremes.
By any chance has he had a round of antibiotics lately? Antibiotics tend to cause yeast infections, and those can look like a diaper rash but will also have red splotchy looking bumps and may bleed. Anyway, my 4 yr old went through a period of having nightmare diaper rashes, so here are some ideas. First, for really bad rashes, the everyday cream will not help much. Try Aquaphor, which you can get at the pharmacy where skin products are - it's so thick it's almost like a liquid bandaid. Keep the area clean and coat it with Aquaphor. Since he may be having his BM during the night, you may want to put a coating of Aquaphor on him with his last diaper change. If it's a yeast infection, your dr will likely tell you to try Lotrimin cream (the anti-fungal you find in the Athlete's Foot area). You can put the Lotrimin on first and then coat the area with Aquaphor. The more he can go without a diaper at all the quicker the area can heal. You might even consider letting him take his nap without a diaper - put several layers of sheet savers and towels down underneath him. All that fresh air will help clear it up. If it's a yeast infection, another thing that will help is to give him some pro-biotics internally, which are the "good bacteria" in the digestive system. Antibiotics kill all the bacteria, including the good ones, and that's why one is susceptible to yeast infections after antibiotics. You can get pro-biotics in a powder form at the pharmacy or at whole foods. It has no taste and can be added to milk or sprinkled on food. Another good cream, for medium bad rashes, is Beaudraux Butt Paste. Steer clear of high acid fruits for a while as the citrus can aggravate the diaper rash when it sits on the bottom. oh, and be sure to call your dr and discuss. good luck.
I loved Dr. Smith's Diaper cream with my first!!! I also used Boudreaux's Butt Paste (yes, this is the name) with good success with my second son. I wouldn't hesitate to use either of these again.
If it is a yeast infection, the Lotrimin suggested already works great. We make a paste with Lotrimin AF, Vaseline, and Hydrocortisone which is awesome! (Pedi suggested the paste idea so that it combats the yeast, itchiness and creates a barrier against more moisture.) As for a great diaper cream, Burt's Bees is he ONLY one that works for my son. We tried Desitin, Boudreauxs, Dr Smiths, Triple Paste and others, and nothing worked as well as Bert's!
I had great results from Beaudreaux Butt Paste...strange name, but it works very well..
DR. SMITHS DIAPER CREAM all the way. You may want to mix it with Lotrimin (spelling??) also in case the antibiotics are creating a yeast infection. Also, giving him a probiotic two hours after the antibiotic may help replenish the good bacteria and reduce some of these symptoms.

Is you son's new medicine red or pink? I have a friend whose son began with horrendous diaper rashes after taking a new medicine that was pink. He has since been reacting the same way after fruit snacks, pink yogurt, etc. They suspect a red dye allergy. If the medicine does have that color, I would watch to see how he reacts with other things that could have red dye in them. Just a thought...
Well, I could be yeast. But since you say that he wakes up with a b.m. am I to assume he is dirty when he wakes up?
If that is the case and the dirty diaper has been on for a while the irritation is probably due to the intestianl acids in the stool. Try using MAALOX topically to neutralize the acids. You can swab it right on the skin.
If he is having a rash not associated with a dirty diaper in the morning. Then the culprit is probably untreated yeast. If it is yeast, you HAVE to use medicine to kill the yeast from a specific medicine for that. Regular diaper rash medicines do not work to kill yeast, they only work to create a protective barrier next to the skin.
Yeast medicines include: Lotrimin, Monostat vagianl cream can be used topically, Tioconazole 1% is at wal-mart. It is a generic vagianal antifungal ointment. It is a one dose treatment for vaginal yeast infections. The little tube is about $10 but can be used topically anywhere. It will probably work really fast and it is an ointment so will create some barrier with the skin. I use it for myself and it works fast. I am allergic to the monistat creams. But for your application the creams probably won't work as well. You can also use any Athlete's foot powder on his tushy. At the hospital where I work, we always request powder antifungals over creams. The powder keeps the skin drier and helps the rash to dry up faster. Creams work, but keep the areas moist.
Yeast like to grow in dark, moist places on the body. They include: Under the arms, belly button, under the breasts, and the Hiney area, and of course the mouth. I would definately check the mouth also for any redness, dryness, raw areas on the tongue, white patches, or sores. Yeast of the mouth is called thrush. If you need something for the mouth you can try GENTIAN VIOLET. It is an old time remedy. You can probably find it at a drug store but will probably have to ask for it. It is really cheap and over the counter. It coats the mouth with a VIOLET stain. And it will permanently stain anything it touches, even the drool will stain stuff. Or you can get some Nystatin swish and spit from the Pediatrician, but trust me it will be a struggle to get your son to take it. It tastes really bad. None of my babies would take it, hence the use of the violet.
I really don't think the allergy medicinc has anything to do with his raw hiney, just for the record.
I would definately treat for yeast before continueing with any other topical diaper rash medicine. If you use the diaper rash medicine it can create a barrier and the yeast medicine never gets close to the skin.
Oh, I am a mother to 3 boys who ALL had bouts with thrush and skin yeast. I am also a yeasty person for some strange reason. Doctor says some people just are. I am also an R.N. and have been for about 15 years. I hope all that helps.
Good luck,
L.
Have you tried Lotrimin? (Yes, the stuff you buy to treat Athlete's foot) That is what my DR prescribed. After being on antibiotics, my boys always get a bad diaper rash which the doctor says is actually a yeast infection. I'm not sure if your son's allergy medicine would cause the same problem. Diaper creams didn't help at all, but switching to Lotrimin 3xs a day took care of it within a couple days. You could stop by your local pharmacist to see if he/she agrees with giving that a try.
The only diaper rash cream that has worked wonders for both my kids is Arbonne Herbal Diaper Rash Cream - its safe and has natural ingredients. The downside is you have to get it from a representative but its well worth it. I also use their baby lotion and baby soap. Lasts a very long time...only have to use a little. No ingredients that are harmful. Lately there has been tons of talk about all the stuff in Johnsons and other brands. I know there are tons of reps on this site who can help you. If you can't find one let me know and I can put you in touch with mine in Frisco. I'm telling you its WONDERFUL!! Works overnight...and I didnt' believe it till I tried it myself.
I know I am late on this but we had a similar problem. Feed him yogurt (or probiotics) everyday. It has worked for us. I just get the Dannon PLAIN yogurt and my 14 mo old loves it. Sometimes I put fresh or canned fruit(not the sugary kind) in it.
I use vaseline because it was the only thing I put on my sons diaper rash without him screaming in pain.......everything else would sting him and it just broke my hear.
