Diapers and Potty Training

I realize every child is different and children potty train at different ages, but I am wondering how high most people go in diaper sizes before their child is potty trained. We want to stock up on diapers since prices are going up, but don't know how high to go in size. Our 1-year old son weighs nearly 23 pounds and currently wears size 3 or size 4. Think we'll need size 5? How about size 6? Do they go any higher? Appreciate your input!

So What Happened?

Thanks for the good advice! We bought several boxes of size 4 diapers and a few boxes of size 5 (all on clearance). Should do for quite a while, I think. Appreciate your input!

5 was the biggest size we went to. My daughter was tall though but I just felt the 5's were more comfy for her then trying to save a few dollars on 4's. We never got to a size 6. I have to agree with another mom on here. The white cloud training pants from walmart are the best, I tried all the expensive ones with all the feel and learn and all that stuff but half the time they would rip down the side when Id go to put them on or leak, when he's ready for training pants white cloud is deff the way to go ( I even tried other store brands). Hope this helps

I'd stock up on 4's, but some 5's and that's it. My daughter will be 2 in a month and has been in a 4 for over a year now. She's thin, but the 4's are still roomy. If you have a big guy, maybe buy more 5's. You'll probably switch to pull ups at some point too. If you buy more than you need or the wrong sizes, I'm sure there would be some craigslisters who would buy them from you:)!

I tend to go along with most of the other readers. The largest I ever bought with any of my sons was a 5. All four of my boys stayed in a size 4 forever. I'd buy mainly size 4's and a few 5's.

OK, apparently I am the minority here, my son is 2 and half and he is wearing a 6. They are the pampers cruisers. I think we went up to them a little early, but he has been in them since before he turned two. He tends to round out then get taller, so we moved him up early. He is also very big for his age. Also, someone told me if you need them, you can special orrder size 7 in the cruisers, hoping we don't need those, as we are getting ready to start potty training. I stock up on diapers whenever they are on sale, too.

We always went up to size 5. I'm not sure there is a size 6.

I would get size 5. My 2 year old is very tall and even though weight-wise he can still wear a 4, the 5s are far more comfortable for him and fit him better. We're in the midst of potty training, but for night and certain situations, we still need more security than Pull Ups offer. Plus -you're right -every kid is different, but it seems if you have to make a generalization that boys do become COMPLETELY potty trained a little later than girls -closer to being 3 or over, so you'll probably get plenty of use out of 5s. AND -not sure if you're all done or planning to have more -but if you think you'll have another child, you can save any left overs for that one.

Hard to say what size to stock up on. My 2 yr. old has been in a size four since he was about one! He just gets a little taller, not rounder. :) This I believe is attributed to the fact that both his dad and I are tall and lean as well. So maybe you could base what you're going to need in relation to that too? I don't know, just a thought!

I would think size 5 would be enough. My daughter weighs 30 lbs and has been in size 4 for a long time. May move her to a 5 soon. I think diapers only go to a 6 though...I could be wrong.

Angle,
Every child is different about when but a WISE OLDER LADY once said to me"Honey when you child can tell you he needs a new diaper he is past ready to be potty trained. In other words, " MOM YOU HAVE MISSED THE DIAPER BOAT". There is a time period when your child is aware of his bowel movement and if you don't catch him in time he will make potty training a DEAL and you will be worried about buying diapers for a 4 year old. Watch him, but 1 years old is too young but 24 months and up is almost too late to catch the boat.

I never went beyond size 4. Both of my boys potty trained at 2 1/2 years old and they were wearing size 4 at the time. My now 2yo daughter currently wears size 4 and she'll be exactly 2 1/2yo this upcoming month. I just don't see myself using the next size up at all.

we're in a size 6, my daughter has always been off the charts for weight though. my local target has big boxes marked down so you may want to check there...got some pampers there today for under $20, the 72 count box. i have heard that you can special order sizes above 6.

Hard to say. I don't remember what size my daughter was in by time she trained, but I'm sure it was either a 4 or a 5 and she was about 2 1/2 yrs old and skinny.

My son is 25lbs now and turned 2 in May and wears a 4 in White Cloud and Huggies but 5 in Pampers and Luvs!!

There are size 6 diapers but I don't know for sure who makes them.

I understand what you say about diaper prices!! I noticed that our Walmart used to carry the cases of Pamper in size 5 with 80 diapers in the case and now it went down to 76 diapers and the price is still 21.74!!! All of Pampaers lowered their quanties in their packs!! Oh, and some people don't know this but Luvs is made by Pampers!! And for some reason, I've noticed that case quanties are larger at Walmart than compared to Kmart and Target in Luvs and Huggies. If you called Huggies and either complain or compliment their products, they'll send you some execlent coupons!! Oh, and don't buy diapers at the grocrey store-they are way more expensive that way and always buy them by the case which is cheaper!!!

Play around with store brands too. Some of them are really good diapers!! I like White Cloud but my son can't wear Parent's Choice because he leaks in them. Buy them in small packs first to try them out before making the dive into a case size. I've tried Target brand as well and didn't care for them, Kirkland (Cosco brand) didn't go over well either. The only one I haven't tried is Kmart's Little Ones.

Good luck and happy diapering!!
S.

I went up to 4 with my girls. That said, boys tend to potty train a little slower/later so there's a good chance you might use some 5's. Both my girls were around 20 lbs age 1, 30 lbs age 2, and 40 lbs age 3. My fist potty trained just before 3 and my second was 2-2.5. Since boys average training around 3-4 and might weigh a little more, I'd look on the package to be sure when they switch to size 5 but I'm thinking it's common for boys. Consider the possibility, though, that by the time he's big enough for 6's then you might prefer pullups that he can learn to put on and off himself by that age and not the regular lie down diapers.

Here's an idea...Go to snap-ez.com and get a few cloth diapers. My almost four yr old still fits in a large and has plenty of growing room. She is about 36lbs. and only uses it sometimes at night. It saves a TON of money and you reuse it over and over and over! I wish I found these when she was a baby! They have changed so much over the last 20 years, check them out:) Good luck!

I would stuck up on size 5... after that it is just training pants, i would also buy them size 5... Once kids start walking they get rid of a lot of baby fat and tend to lose weight, so no need for size 6...
But that is what I would do... Hope this helps..

unless you plan on having a child still in diapers until they are 4 size 4 should be sufficient unless your baby doesn't slim out
