Diarrhea?

my 16 month old has always had issues with pooping. it's usually really tough on her belly, she cries when she goes, and it's really hard, little balls. the dr said she isn't nessecarily constipated, so we have just tried different things like increasing her fruit, fiber, and water intake. some of those things seemed to help, but never enough. it is always painful for her to poop.

last week, she started pooping without crying and it was like normal, soft baby poop. a couple times, though, it was TOO soft-more like diarrhea, and she pooped up to three times a day. i'm guessing the dr will tell me its not diarrhea, but its SO unusual for her that it's making me worried. i took her temp-no fever, and she had no other symptoms. there have been no drastic changes in her diet or anything i can think of that would hav brought on this sudden change. i gave her lots of water and some pedialyte and she seemed fine. she's due for her shots this week, though, and i am nervous for her to get them if she has some sort of virus. she didnt poop at ALL yesterday for the first time since the soft poop started. she has a dr appt today but because she didnt do it yesterday, i know he will tell me it may have been a virus and not to worry. i just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience.

What can I do next?

hey A.

am going throught the same thing with my 13 month old it could be the milk if she is on whole , i put my baby on 2% if her poop is messy i dont hink that it but if her poop is like watery that more like dirrea you can give her some pedealite for both and see if it makes a change and for poop she has trouble with try ped-lax if she has a lot of back pop that want come out, it will take care of that and add more fiber to her diet look for applesauce with more fiber good luck

Our pediatrician indicated that our (19 mo. old) daughter could be getting too much dairy. She drinks milk and loves yogurt. So we backed off that and gave her more water and/or juice, and it's reduced the frequency of the hard little pellets, and is easier on her tummy.

Heat always makes me and my family go more. Especially the first really hot spell of the summer. I don't know where you live but it has been getting hot here recently. Were you outside and did she get sweaty and very hot? I wouldn't worry about it. All first time moms have questions like this and I did too with my first one but you will soon realize that just after you think your in a "normal routine" everything will change all at once with her. Try not to worry, Good luck!

I have a 5 year old daughter with extreme constipation issues. She finally had to go to a GI doctor after she was severely constipated for 5 weeks. If she goes more than 3 days without a BM, start calling your doctor. As you were describing your situation, it was like flashbacks. One of the biggest things for her was taking her off of dairy products. That constipated her big time. As far as looser stools, she might be teething, eating something funny, or just has a bug going through her system. Make sure to not let her go too long because now, my daughter has the biggest stools you have ever seen (clog the toilet kind) and struggles. We put her no miralax which was a big help for her; however, her colon is so stretched out that I think she will always have excessively large stools.

painful and hard little balls and your dr said it may not be constipation? Maybe you need a different dr! When a person has food allergies it will often alternate between constipation and loose stools--cow's milk products and gluten are the primary causes. I had this problem since I was a little girl until a few years ago(I am 51!).After going on a dairy and gluten free diet --no more bowel problems. No it is not easy at times but I am so used to it now that it is not a problem. Health food stores or natural food co-ops are good places to start with finding alternatives. Celiac disease is far more commmom than most American drs think (in Europe they test for it routinely) but you don't necessarily have to be a true Celiac to be sensitive to gluten. Gluten is the protein in wheat, rye, spelt, barley and oats(though there is controversy on the oats it causes big problems for me). Grains you can eat are rice, millet, quinuo, amaranth. Also corn if there are no corn allergies. Soy can also cause problems unless fermented(tempeh, miso) so don't use soy milk. There are several rice, nut and seed based "milks" available for cereal. For drinking plain old water is always the best!

Are you sure our daughters aren't twins? HA! My 16 month old is EXACTLY the same way. I thought I was the only one! :D I know with my daughther ANYTHING out of the ordinary can really mess up her digestive system. She doesn't get sick, but the consistency and frequency change. I've brought it up to her doctor, and was told not to worry about it. I try to make sure she gets fruit (or juice) several times a day along with lots of water. I don't think there's much else you can do. If she went for more than 3 or 4 days w/o a poopie, then I'd be concerned. One day is no big deal. Mention it to her doctor though. Even if they tell you it's nothing, at least you'll know for sure.

When a child has watery-type stools, that is true diareah. When your child has always had hard formed stools, it is strange to have the softer stools more often, but good for him/her. I too, at age 48,found out I had an allergy to milk - it can cause constipation, bloating and IBS [Irritable Bowel Syndrome]. When I switched to soy & rice products my IBS totally went away! Many children cannot tolerate milk very well, but we as parents do not realize this because of the 'normal' constipation they have. Yes, viruses and teething can cause changes in bowel habits too. Glad you are taking her to doctor to ease your mind. When my oldest was little, we had to give her soy milk and add corn syrup to her formula to make it 'smooth'. MY other daughter needed to be on soy formula as well. Little did I know that later on, we would find out that two of her relatives are allergic to corn products [Little sister and me].

Just a thought, though maybe non-related: Is your daughter teething at all?
Both of my children's stools changed during times of teething. Oftentimes they are 'sandy' -- weird, but no other way to describe it. I've heard that loose stools can be common, too.

My daughter used to poop pellet-like poop, too. The Dr said it was from all the fat in her milk (vitamin D). She just switched to 2% now that she's 2, and it's not so pellet-like anymore. As for the diarrhea, maybe your daughter is teething? Mine would always get diarrhea as a sign of teething. Hope this helps.
