Hello Mamas,
Just a quick question......my son who is 9 year-old has had watery diarrhea since Friday evening (almost 4 days now). He is drinking water, trying bland foods (applesauce, pretzels, crackers). It is not working. I am just wondering if I should take him in to the pediatrician or not. I know sometimes these things have to run their course. I plan on going to get pedialyte this morning. How long is too long?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I did end up taking my son to the pediatrician.....I mentioned that he was also complaining of a sore throat on Friday.....turns out he has strep throat and so does my 6 year old who just happened to be at the appointment with us. No fevers and no real symptoms in my younger son other than a runny nose. This is the second time they have had strep in 1 month. Makes me wonder if it never was resolved after the first time. Both of my sons are on an antibiotic and the ped. advised me to give my older son Florastor for Kids for the diarrhea. I found it at CVS. I think it is similar to a probiotic. I am concerned though now that the antibiotic will just increase the diarrhea. What a nightmare day. Lots of rest, and liquids at my house......my liquid may be a glass of wine though :)

Om my gosh we have the same thing! Except we live in Seattle.. I had it along with my 6 year old for 4-5 days.. Now my 9 year old dd has it too. I have a call into her pediatric office.. To ask if there is something ok to give her for the crampy tummy. I hope he feels better!

Both my kids just had the stomach flu with diarrhea. My ped also recommended florastor and it really helped. Within a day of taking that I could see a huge difference. They also did the BRAT diet and ate tons of rice crispies with no milk.

Good luck!

You can give him some Probiotics and 100% pumpkin (not the fake stuff!). Both will help firm up his stools. I would at least put a call in to his doctors office. The nurse there can tell you if/when he needs to be seen.

Stick to the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) Lots of clear fluids. Is he on any medication or possible eating anything else that you are unaware of? Acidophillus capsules may help. I would call the Dr if its not better today, 4 days is a long time with risk of dehydration. No other symptoms?

I have heard 7 days can be normal for diarrhea to run it's course, but if there there are other symptoms like fever or dehydration I would take him in. Also, try the BRAT diet to try to firm him up -- Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. I cook rice in chicken broth and put some parmesan cheese on it.
