Make him oatmeal with yo-baby plain and banana. This always hardened Chloe's stools when she had diahrrea and helped her handle the antibiotics better. Also lots of water or pedialyte. Hope he's better soon.
Please HELP!
My son has really bad diaharrea due to amoxcillin. Does anyone have any ideas or advice. He's 22 months old.

Hi Y..
Try pedialyte if you haven't yet. Also, try giving him some carbs and starches like bread, potatoes, crackers, or even dry cereal. Good Luck.
Try the B.R.A.T. diet...
Bananas
Rice (plain)
Applesauce
Toast
These are natural fixes and work very quickly. Remember to keep him hydrated!

There is something you can get over the counter at the drug store. Ask the pharasist. It replaces all of the good baceria in the intestines that antibiotics take out.
Y.,
My son leaked on and stained all his clothes with antibiotic diarrhea at 9 months. It was HORRIBLE! I wish I had heard about the yogurt thing. My doctor said to make sure he got plenty of fluids (of course). Pedialyte is good, but read the label. It doesn't last long after being opened.
I quickly figured out that I had to keep him clean too. As soon as he went I would change his diaper, clean him thoroughly, dry him off, and apply LOTS of diaper rash cream. I used Aveeno. My son has eczema, so he still got a bad rash. I had to wake him up to change him a few times each night. It was not pleasant, but it only lasted for as long as he was on the Amoxicillin. Hang in there!

If its getting too bad, call the doctor, cause they may want to take him off of it, I just had my daughter on a antibiotic and she wasn thrwing up and they said to not give it to her anymore and they switched, but put that clear balmex diaper rash cream on him after every diaper change and it will help it not to stick to him....hope he gets better soon -M.
All good advice, but if you can catch him between poops - soak him in some Aveeno Oatmeal Bath, it well also help sooth his sore hiney!!!
Diarrhea is relatively common with antibodics and children, my son had the same reaction to amoxcillon... Don't give the baby juice as it will only make it worse. If the diarrhea is really bad, try giving pedialyte to him. You can also try to make him a little more comfortable my massaging his belly gently or by rotating his legs back and forth (like riding a bicycle) to ease the discomfort of the gas.
Try giving him 2 yogurts a day. That is what my doctor told me to give my son when she put him on amoxicillin. And make sure he is taking the amoxicillin with a full belly of food :-)
Hi,
Make sure he's drinking enough fluids, specially pedialite and rice milk, but preferable no juices because sugar makes it worse, as does regular milk.
Also, try to feed him rice, bananas and other carbs, it helps with the diarrhea.
The other thing is to change him constantly to avoid bad rashes.
Good luck!
Dear Y.:
The best thing for this type of diarrhea is probiotics. I've heard even yogurt will do but I sometimes use the powdered ones of the type they sell at Wild Oats. There is also a good health store just south of the corner of SW 72nd St. on SW 57th Ave., 1/2 block away from Sunset Place. If you are not familiar with natural health aids and supplements it is a good place to go because I understand the people that run it are super knowledgeable and helpful.
If you need any more information you can email me but right now I am so tired my eyes are crossing and the only reason I went ahead and wrote to you is because your problem has a very simple solution.
Good luck!
PS: Last time I gave my 3-year old probiotics her pediatrician prescribed one dose a day for 10 days and she has been fine ever since.
Hi,
I am very familiar with the "antibiotic diahrrea" Buy some baby yogurt. The organic kind. I think it is called Yo Baby" it's about 3-4 dollars. It's only for the week and it may help. I use it religiously. The active ingredient is achidophilis or something like that. When a baby is taking antibiotics, there is a chance that the good bacteria gets killed also. So you have to replace it. Be careful with rashes. I hope he feels better. Oh yes, the pedialyte helps. Try the pops you put in the freezer. Use a medicine dropper if you have to. They have to have at least a couple tablespoons every hour. Dehydration is not a good thing. Take care.
Yogurt works, but get the "plain" kind that has no sugar in it. You can get good quality yogurt from Whole Foods or Chamberlains. Seven Stars Farm or Nancy Organic are good brands. Add 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon.

I saw somenone mentioned the yo baby yogart. Don't get the kind with fruit as the fruit acids neutralize the acidophillus. Even if it says live active cultures-there won't be any if it has fruit added. You could add a little applesuace at the time you're giving it. I would also buy some of the acidophillus powder to add. You're son's had this for awhile hasn't he? He could really use the boost. check the refrig section of health food stores. I get the powder form for the kids and it's basically tasteless.
As weird as this may sound when my kids would get diarrhea first of all you make sure the child is drinking plenty of fluids. I would give my kids flour mixed with water and a little sugar, The sugar was there only to make tbem drink it. Eventually the bowels went back to being solid, I mean not undomfortably solid. not to mention the stomach area would become coated.
Y.- Perhaps try some Plain Quacker oatmeal and/or rice. The fiber in the oatmeal will absorb some of the fluid in his system; as will the rice. Add a little applesauce, so it will taste sweet. Also, blend the dry oatmeal so it won't be so course for your 22 month old to get down. Whenever my son had diarrhea, I did this. I also tried grits. Yogurt made whatever warm cereal I gave him creamier and sweet. Today, a comfort food for my son is oatmeal and La Creme Mousse strawberry yogurt. Dry wheat toast will also absorb fluid in his system. I think some of these suggestions are based on the Bratt diet; which is recommended by some pediatricians during young childhood, when they have diarrhea. Chin up and hugs to your son! D.
Applesauce, crackers, can't remember the other bulking foods, sorry.
