Did You Guys Experience This with Food?

Here's the breakdown....I am 5 and a half months...and so far I have put on ten pounds...I had no problem with food during my pregnancy so far...but this last week or so I feel like I am eating non stop. I am always feeling hungry. Today I had breakfast, went shopping, came back made a big sandwich with two glasses of soy milk...then I ate tortilla chips and sauce and now I am eating cereal with a banana and I still feel hungry. I know a lot of you moms are going to say " you are eating for two" but I know for a fact you dont need to consume twice as much as normal, thats how you gain too much during pregnancy and get fat. So, I am wondering if you moms have gone through the same thing? I feel literally voraciously hungry. As where one plate of food used to satisfy me I find I can probably shovel in three. Is this a normal phase for pregnancy? And yes, I know I have to eat to get the baby its nutrients, but I dont want to get comfortable eating this much, its like food is all I can think about. I sit at work and fantasize about whats in my cupboard at home or what I can grab out of the vending machine, and I dont want the baby to be an "excuse" to overeat when its not necessary.

What can I do next?

This is completely normal...I called it my "bottomless pit" month. No matter how much I ate I always felt hungry. It passes, but to avoid weight gain - just eat sensible foods - which it already sounds like you are.
Good luck and Congrats!

I was SO sick in the first trimester and ate next to nothing... Around 15 weeks the nausea went away and my hunger was insatiable! But, only for about a month or maybe two at the most. It went away... By the third trimester, I was struggling to eat enough because I felt so full of baby. I gained 17 pounds during my pregnancy, lost weight in the first trimester, gained a bunch in the second, gained almost nothing in the third. My baby girl was almost 9 pounds when she was born. I think you'll be fine... If you actually feel hungry then your body needs it.

When I was pregnant I felt like I was eating constantly and didn't gain any weight until the third trimester. I tried to make sure that I was eating healthy snacks even if it was easier at work to eat other stuff. I think it's a pretty normal 2nd trimester thing to eat more food. Later on, there's not enough space for more food!

Hi,
I just wanted to help make you feel better...
I ate egg rolls and milkshakes through MOST of my pregnancy! I gained almost 50 pounds. Unless the DR says you are gaining too much weight, I wouldn't worry too much. Try keeping crackers or yogurt, or what ever you like to snak on close at hand. If you are eating bits throughout the day you won't be as hungry at meals. And if you are craving this food, the baby probably "wants" it and it can not be bad!
I should mention though, that I was a bit underweight when I got pregnant and the DR never really told me to stop gaining weight. I did get back down to a healthy weight and did not maintain my eating habits after my daughter was born. I hope this helps!

Yes it's normal! But, it goes away. I'm 29 weeks and my need to eat has subsided. This is my 4th pregnancy and I experienced it with every pregnancy! Make sure you're active. I do feel like I have been eating more, but I try to run every other day and I haven't been gaining weight faster. Also make sure what you eat isn't junk...well, not too much!

I am 6 months pregnant and eat almost on an hourly basis. I am just hungry, cant help it. If your hungry then eat and if your worried about to many calories try to eat healthier things and light exercise if your able. At your next dr appt as your dr about your eating. And I also fantisize about food all the time! Right now I am needing a very large pulled pork sandwhich! Good luck!

Hmm.. I think if you are hungry you should eat. Make sure you get some exercise though. 10 lb. in 5 1/2 months isn't bad. Just make sure you don't gain too much weight because it can actually cause your child to have allergies. Plus, you will feel a lot better postpartum if you only have a few lb. to lose rather than a lot.

Relax!! You may be voraciously hungry right now, probably due to a growth spurt, but that doesn't mean you will feel this way for the rest of your pregnancy. Listen to your body and if it says, "I'm hungry!" then eat! Make good choices, stay away from empty calories and processed foods, and you won't gain excessive weight.

That is so normal. I had days like that. Look, you are growing a human and that takes lots of energy. Eat if you feel hungry.

I am currently pregnant and in the same situation. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I'm constantly hungry. I eat way too much. I'm 30 weeks pregnant, and so far I've already gained 50 lbs. The same thing happened w/ my first two pregnancies. I gained bunch of weight, and had big babies (9lbs, 7 oz girl, and 9lb, 13oz girl). I was fairly thin before pregnant, and after pregnancies, I'm huge. So, it's a weight issue, and also a risk of delivering a large baby. My OB will induce me a week before, just because I've gained so much weight. So, you may request to be induced a week before w/ just that reason. I can't give you much advice, except to tell you that it is pregnancy related, and you're not alone, many pregnant women go through this... Good luck :-)

My doctor told me if I was hungry to eat. He will monitor your weight gain. I gained about 27 pounds, and I was eating like a cow. I felt like I was as big as a house. We would go out for lunch at work and I would two slices of scilian pizza. This may not sound like alot but they were such big slices by themselves, two had to be served on one of those round metal pizza trays that they cook pizza on. I didn't really realize how much food it really was until one day I was on my second piece and the very large construction worker at the table next to me was only having one, looked at my plate and said damn!!! Don't worry!

honey, you are starving. Your baby is hungry. Feed it. Period. The end. Gaining only 10 pounds in 5 and half months is not alot, not even enough, unless you are obese to start with. Hasn't your ob/gyn told you to gain some more weight? I gained 10 pounds the first 3 months!! And I am small - 5"4 & 110 pounds before/after baby. If you are hungry, then eat. I honestly don't know what you are afraid of - gaining weight? Having your body change? What did you think was going to happen when you got pregnant?!

Your fear and the responsibility of growing another human being inside you have got to come to a common, agreeable place, or you & your baby will not be getting the nutrients you BOTH need through this extremely crucial & amazing process. Do you want to deny this child protein, vitamins, calcium etc it needs to have a healthy brain, strong bones, etc etc? Can you imagine saying no to a hungry infant crying in a crib?? What is the difference between that image & the one of the baby crying inside your tummy? Be a mom. Eat. Feed the baby.

I can't really relate, it was hard for me to even see food in commercials without throwing up during my pregnancy so it was a struggle to keep anything down.

But I agree with what everyone has said, if you are hungery -eat. Make sure that about 90% of what you are eating is healthy. Try keeping crackers, yogurt, rice cakes, etc. handy at all times.

Most importantly make sure you are drinking tons of WATER. A lot of times thirst can mask itself as hunger. I would always have a water bottle with me. And I would put a rubber band on it each time I finished it throughout the day. I would make sure I had at least 8 bands by the end of the day.

Although it wasn't for me, I know this is very very normal for preggies to not be able to fill those growing tummies. I wouldn't worry about it becoming a lifestyle change

It's hormones, dear. Make the effort to eat the "right" foods, chew slowly and allow your body to digest. It's actually a false symptom of hunger that you are eating voraciously. Your organs are being shifted to accomodate the baby.
So, eat more nutritiously, chew slowly and enjoy your pregnancy.
