Did You Teach Your Toddler to Swim?

This summer I really noticed how much my 2yr old loves the water. So my question is did any of you teach your own kids to swim or did you sign them up for lessons? How old should toddlers be to learn to swim? Would appreciate your opinions/advise please, thanks in advance.

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your advice and experience. We don't have a pool, but we do have a pool in our community residents facility. Unfortunately they will be closed after September. My son has had so much fun so far this summer but he's been sticking to the shallow end just jumping around and such. We haven't taken the leap off the baby steps. So unless I find a pool that is open later, we will probably have to wait until next summer.

HI Cladia,
My husband and i did both. I have a5 year old girl who has been in the water since about 6 weeks. We taught her until she was about 2.5 then put her in swim lessons. We are pregnant with anohter right now and know that we will do the same. It is imporatnat for you to be a part of the begining so they know you are comfortable with the water as well.

Happy Swimming!

We did both on 2 of the children. But the older girl, seemed to scared of the water after lessons. so we did a plan. I know it sounds funny... She would get in the water and play at the shallow end, but would not jump or dive in. so the whole family would get in the pool and assure her we were their for her. No joke in 1 day we taught her not to be afraid of the water, jumping in or diving in. We would get in the pool and put all this fun floating things in an all sing the song "we are family"
I think by sister sledge. I don't know, but it worked after several attempts. She just wanted us to sing and laugh. She now
loves the water so much. My son learned, by using floaties.
We had pool parties all the time with other kids that could swim and he just watched them and picked it up right away. After the first party, he used them for about 1/2 hour and wanted to take them off. we stayed near him, but he just picked it up right away. Each child is different. But they will follow by example.
It is always a great ideal to make sure your child can swim.
Good luck to you and your family.

I tryed to teach my 3 yo my self but he was resitant to pretty much anything I would try to teach him at the time so I signed him up for swim lessons at Desert Breeze indoor pool before the summer. My inlaws have a spa and a back yard pond waterfeature and it made me nervous so I wanted him to be able to swim. He did great he wanted to do what the other kids were doing.

Hi, C.!

My 8 yr. old daughter was a fish from the moment she had her first bath. By the time she was about 2, it was very hard to keep her away from water. It got to be scary because she showed NO FEAR --at all-- I was worried she'd drown because of this love and daring behavior! SO... I took her to our local commnunity center and signed her up for lessons. Best money I've spent. She's had 2 other classes since then, and her love of water has not changed. You should sign her up and then, if you wish, follow-up yourself so she retains what she learns.

Definetly encourage this. It's such wonderful excersize, isn't it?

I started mommy me classes with my daughter when she was 9 most old. The school we took her to recommended her age to be one of the best ages to start. It was a family run pool and came highly recommended by reputable people. It turned out we liked it so much we continued it for quite a few years after. We took two lessons a summer. I liked the swim school we went to because they also incorperate water safety into the lessons. If your children are around any kind of water or swimming pools it is a must and can save their lives yes even when they are toddlers. When we took lessons it was non-competitive and we just had a lot of fun and many happy times, it was the best

Most public swimming lessons require you to be in the pool with your child if they are under the age of 3. After that, they can go by themselves, but I think most parents are asked to stay pool-side. I'm going to get both my kids in swimming lessons this spring (when they are 3 and almost 5). I found my oldest does better when someone else is helping him. If it's me, he just holds on for dear life. My daughter on the other hand is very brave and does fine no matter who's helping her. Either way, I'm going to have someone else teach them both.

I signed my son up for swimming lessons when he was really little, I want to say around 1 yr (really young), It was a class where the mother gets in the pool with her child and the Swim Teacher Instructs the mother on how to teach her child, she would come help us, but we did the work. It was a great experiance and a lot of kids did very well in the class, my son didnt like water very much so he didnt do to well, he just wanted to hold on to me and walk around in the water :)

I would love for my toddler to learn how to swim. I don't even know how to swim myself but I would like to learn too. I don't know what is a good age but I am thinking young enough to where they don't understand what afraid is. I am curious do you know of any home business out there because I really would like to work from home. I have a 2 1/2yr. daughter and it would be so much easier for me. I am currently looking for work. Thanks in advance

My daughters were three and two this summer. Between last summer and this summer my husband taught them to swim with floaties. They are both amazing, my guess would be next summer neither of them will have floaties. They both jump in and go under and hold their breaths part way across the pool. Save some money....you can do it yourself.
