I have not been to one, but I have seen many birthday parties at the YMCA. They have either swimming or wall climbing parties. Also, what about bowling? Good luck.
I have a son about to turn 4 in October and I am looking for a place to have his b-day. We have done Chuck E. Cheese, Pump it Up and an indoor waterpark. It is hard to predict the weather (it is usually cold). Our house is too small, for a party there I am looking for a fun place to have a party for him. Anyone with idea please let me know.

Hi D.,
I haven't lived in the area very long and have't been to Pump It Up. It sounds great. I did, however, go to a bday party with my 4 yr old son at the gymnastics place called Splitz. The kids had a great time and I'm sure it wasn't that expensive. There was one girl that did activities with the kids. You then bring in your own pizza and cake, etc... It was simple and nice. My son was asking to go back. So, there is an idea. Have a great day and good luck!

What about the Hands on Museum in Ann Arbor? They do a great birthday, complete with science experiments.
Have you tried having a bowling party, a skating party, laser tag, maybe you can get some of the parents together and take them all to the zoo for his birthday, they would love that. Kids that age are so easy to please, I am sure he will be happy with whatever you do for him. I was going to suggest maybe taking him to a park and renting a bouncy balloon. I don't know where you live but if you live in the detroit area, there is a place in southgate on fort st. right by sav a lot and they have all kinds of balloon things there that kids can play on.
What about a gymnastic place? Downriver gymnastic in Riverview does great parties, or if you don't want that there is the Bouncing off the walls places. The zoo is a great place too. HOpe that helps
