With the whole digital age thing coming on in February I wanted to get some opinions on what is better for the $$$ Dish Network or Direct TV. We live out in the country and the wireless cable service we have doesn't offer some of the channels we would like to have so I'm pondering satelite tv. Thoughts??

What can I do next?

We have tried Dish Network and Direct TV. I think Dish Network was a bit cheaper, but Direct TV had much better quality. We have never had a show 'cut out' with Direct TV, and all the good channels are included! Hope this helps a little!

I have Direct TV and am very satisfied. My daughter has Dish and loves it. Which ever you go to, get the insurance on it, it's about 5.00 a month and well worth it in case you have a problem. It covers any repairs/house calls.

Hello R.,

We live in the country also and are not able to get cable at all. We had Dish Network for the first 5 years we lived here. Every time it just sprinkled rain, it would go out. We switched to Direct TV about 2 years ago. We like it alot better. It has to rain REALLY hard for it to go out. As far as price goes...we have 5 receivers and have just the basic channels (No HBO or Showtime) just Nickelodeon and Disney, Travel, HGTV, Food Network, ESPN etc.(About 150 channels) We pay right at $90 a month which is about what we were paying with Dish Network.
They are always running specials...ask when you call...we got a rebate for a year which was like getting the HD receiver for free !!
We even called Dish Network and told them we were gonna switch to see if they would do anything to keep our business (we had them for about 15 years). They weren't willing to do anything.
Well, when we switched, they started ringing our phone off the wall trying to get us back...we told them that they had their chance and blew it !!

I highly recommend Direct TV.

Hi R.. I live in Canada and I love my satelite service. The only downfall is that when we get a bad electrical rain storm or sometimes a heavy snowfall we sometimes lose reception. Small price to pay for the other benefits. Good luck with your decision.

My husband had Dish forever (before my time). But, we wanted to upgrade too and they were going to charge us Mucho $$$ to upgrade to HDTV and it was minimal availability for HD channels. So, we too switched to Direct TV.....and my husband loves it....we have so much more available to us.....waaaay more sports channels, so we get to see waaaay more Rangers games (he's a huge Rangers fan having grown up in the Dallas area)..... he's absolutely loving that we switched. I agree....get the insurance.....

Oh - and by the way, we too became such valued customers all of a sudden and my husband was on the phone with them for 20 minutes telling them "NO" about staying their "valued customer"..... if being their customer for over 10 years wasn't good enough without having to "leave" to be considered "valued" then, BYE!

My husband and I lived in Colorado for a few years & we had DirectTV and we LOVED IT! We got cable when we moved here to Texas and we are not satisfied at all. We NEVER had any issues w/the dish, even in the snow! The customer service is great and I highly recommend them. I don't know the cost difference between them & Dish Network but it's definately worth the money to use DirectTV.

I have had both Direct TV (2 days) and Dish. Still using Dish and have had no problems what so ever with them. I live in Andrews(West Texas) and the wind blows constantly and I haven't experienced any problems, also with the rain that we finally received over the weekend still had no problems, only problem was when the electricity went out and it had to locate the signal again when it came back on.

I would highly recommend you going online and read the customer testimonies on both Companies.

Kind of Long but keep reading if you want to know why I cancelled Direct TV and can't afford to lose money!!!!

When we decided to go satellite we went with Direct TV first because we were told that we would get local channels and the price looked really great. They came in and installed the dish and after the service man left we had no local channels. So we called customer service and they told us that we could not get local channels at this time, they are working on it but it could take up to a year or 2 to get it in our area and that they were sorry but ever who we spoke with must not have realized it was only in the works to get it.... Anyways she did offer to put in a request for us to receive local stations but the closest they could get us was either LA or Chicago, then it would take up to 40 days to see if we even qualify for it. (I don't know about you but I am addicted to Dancing with the Stars and the new series was coming on in one week and I would have missed it!)
So since we only had it one day my husband asked them if we would be penalized if we cancelled it she said no you have 3 days to cancel with out being charged. So we cancelled it (this is on Friday) and then on Monday I checked my bank account like I do every Monday and there was a $648.00 draft to Direct TV!(we were told by them that to get the special at the time we would have to be set up on automatic draft). I did eventually get my money refunded but I had to put up a fight. I did call them and gave the names of everyone we spoke with and what all transpired and wanted to know why they still drafted my account since we cancelled within the time limit and all they told us is that the computer don't know how long we had the service and that they would send us a credit and it will take up to 12 weeks for us to receive it. (I always wondered why it takes 1 day to draft my account and up to 6 or 12 weeks to credit it back!) Well I don't just have $648.00 to loan them for even 12 weeks and had a lawyer fax them a letter, I rec'd my money the next week.
Anyway when I went on line to get information I read the testimonies and found out that this has happened to alot of other people.
Sorry this is so long but I would hate for this to happen to someone else especially if they can't afford to lose $648.00 or more depending on the order they placed....

Good Luck and hope this helps you with your decision!

We have Dish Network and we hate it! Our contract runs up next month and we have been counting down the days to switch to Direct TV. My twin sister has Direct TV and loves it. I would recommend cable before getting Dish Network, though, terrible experience all around. customer service is rude and deceitful, and our dish goes out for periods of 10 to 20 minutes almost daily...hope this helps :)

We had Dish for many years. We had two recievers and two remotes. One of my remotes broke and I called to request a new one. I was told it would cost me. Since one remote worked both recievers I just went back and forth for years. Then we decided we wanted the DVR feature and since they (Dish) advertised for new costomers the DVR package I called to see what they would do for a valued costomer. Found out we were not so valued after approximatley 6 or 7yrs. They had nothing to offer unless I paid an outrageous amount to get the new equiptment. So we decided to get the wonderful package that Direct TV was offering. I like it so much better. Since we have had Direct I think I have lost signal during storms maybe 3 times. When I was with Dish I lost signal sometimes when it was too cloudy. Oh by the way the day I called to have my Dish service ended a customer service person got on the phone with me and tried very hard to give me anything I wanted to keep me as a "Valued" customer. Needless to say it was too much too late. Hope this helps with your research.

I looked at both and went with Dish due to the fact that you can have 1 receiver for 2 TV's where direct you had to have one receiver for every TV. Other than that there is probably not much difference. There is a fee for each receiver. I have not had any problems with Dish customer service. I had problems with one of my receivers so I called them and they sent a new one that same day received it in about 2 days with no charge.

I suggest calling and asking what kind of special offers they have at the time. Also find out if you will get local channels with either service. We live in San Angelo, which isn't small, but we don't get local channels on our DirecTV, but DishNetwork offers locals. We have DirecTV for the NFL Sunday Ticket so we can watch our Sehawks games every weekend without having to go out.

hey R.! I know from experience that Dish network is a pretty good service to have, its cheap and you get alot of the channels that you would probably really like. The direct Tv is good also, but i feel that it isnt all that great and like all satelite services it has alot of the same channels. Its also alot more expensive, especially in my area. My boyfriend had the Dishnet and after he moved in we tried getting it in my area, but its not available at this time. Anyway...GOOD LUCK on your decision.

We had dish first (in remote area of Brazoria). Went on to direct because of more channels for a little more, but were much happier. It also cuts out less. Dish cut out for every little shower, Direct very, very seldom cuts out. Has to be a major thunderstorm directly overhead. I got dish for my mom in Lake Jackson because it was cheaper at the time, but she was furious because it would cut out at the hint of a storm. But, they added tower's or something in the area and it rarely goes out anymore. I have had good luck dealing with direct when I've needed help with anything...good luck.

Hi R.,

My name is S.. We have had both dish and direct. Right now we have direct and I don't like it. Every times it rains or the wind barely blows we lose signal. Dish is better (in my opinion). The only reason we switched is for another box. But I still think dish is better. When it snowed here we never lost signal. We live in the country and when Fay (t.s.) came through we didn't go without t.v. which was great with 2 kids and nowhere to go. We are waiting for our contract to be over and then back to dish we go. I hope I could help. Good luck. the price is better with dish, we were paying about $70 a month, when we switched they gave me a great deal the they keep going up and up now I pay about $100 amonth for some reason. When I calland ask why I get that's the way it is. Rude peole at direct tv.

Hey R., I hated satelite t.v. when it rains or we have really bad weather you will not have any service at all!! I like to watch the news when a storm is coming to be informed. If it just rains hard not a big storm it still goes out!!I would not ever get rid of Time Warner we love it. We just wish they offered a football package and they don't. My friend just got Universal cable and its pretty cool check it out. You get a ton of channels and a sports package!!B.

My husband (who loves his digital TV) always does comparison shopping on his technology... He says Direct TV. Better customer support. Plus, Dish Network is currently losing customers and in his opinion, has a questionable future; they used to have a partnership with AT&T and now AT&T has announced that it is ending its contract.

Also he says Direct TV has more digital channels... Although the reliabilty/coverage is about the same between the two.

And Direct TV offers more specialized sports packages than Dish (football, NASCAR, hockey, NBA, etc). That might not matter much to you, but it might be meaningful to you husband.

Lastly, he says the one thing that Dish Network has is the home network feature (where if you record something on one TV system, you can access and watch it on another TV in the house). However, Direct TV is suppose to be offering this eventually.

Hi! We used to have Dish Network. We have Direct TV now and love it. There was a huge change in the quality of the picture the second it was hooked up. It was brighter, clearer, and the signal must be better because it never goes out. This happened frequently with Dish. We also got a better deal with Direct. It is also less expensive than cable and has a ton of HD channels. I think Dish has less HD and they charge for it as an upgrade.

We have DirecTV and really like it. I haven't had any problems. Plus we really enjoy NFL football, so we get the NFL network where we can see all of the games. If you call, they are having a special right now where you get the NFL network and all of the Premium channells for only 79.99/month.
Good Luck and have a GREAT day!

I have used both, and may have some information that may help. Direct tv has the lower prices for just the basic channels and they offer more sports at a better price if you are interested in sports. Dish Network has more movie channels and are not much more expensive where that goes. I just switched from Dish to Direct Tv because my husband is really into sports. There is a number, 1-888-333-DISH...they work for both Dish and Direct Tv. They will be able to help you choose what is right for you, cheapest and what channels your looking for.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,
M.

P.S.
I have seen lots of people say they loose their signal, they shouldn't loose it often. Make sure that no matter who you go with your peak signal is no lower than 84.
