Dishwasher Retaining Water... Whats Broken, Dishwasher or Plumming???

Take out the lower rack of the dishwasher and look at the point where the water flows out. Most dishwashers have a filter of some sort in there to protect the pump from sucking up things that may damage it. This filter needs to be cleaned periodically as food and other goo will get stuck in it. That would be the first place I would look and see if it helps.

I would also recommend starting by cleaning the filter.

There should always be water left in the dishwasher but you shouldn't be able to see it. If you take the bottom agitator off you will see water, ya know? When is the last time you cleaned out the traps or took the agitator off. A lot of stuff gets caught in there and over times stops it from draining properly.

Cleaning that out might be a good first step before calling a repairmen.

Don't use Drano! You could damage the dishwasher beyond repair!

I'd call your plumber and tell him the problem and ask him if he can fix it. It could be that there is a blockage and he would at least be able to determine that. He most likely has fixed many a dishwasher and could handle a simple fix.

Our washer is very fussy about the disposal being clear. It's hooked to the disposal line and if you do not run the disposal and run the water for a few minutes after using the sink it will not drain, back up and will collect in the dishwasher.

Try running the disposal for a minute then turn the washer directly to the drain part of the cycle we can hear ours draining properly by listening at the sink. It's a little bit of trouble but we've had people out to try to fix it with no luck, we have a new washer and still it has this issue. We just gave up and did what works to clear it at least once a day.

As a longtime plumbing dispatcher I would say it is the trap in the bottom of the dishwasher. The plumbers usually remove the trap (not all of them come out) and suck out the excess water and food bits with a shop vac. If the problem still continues then you should call a repair shop.

If the drain doesn't drain at all, that's a problem. But if the water is draining between cycles but not at the end, I think I know. Is the water soapy, or is it just the rinse water? There's probably a removable strainer at the bottom you can remove and clean. Check for debris, and also whether it's sticky. Sometimes people wash their recyclables, and the glue from the labels collects down below. Clean in hot water with dishwashing liquid to dissolve grease.

The other thing is, there is a gasket (a rubber strip) keeping water from going up inside the door. If the water works its way up inside, then it's going to drain out at the end of the cycle and collect in the bottom after the regular drainage part of the cycle is over. If that's true, you may find some black rubbery residue in the drain. Also, run your finger along the bottom of the dishwasher at the edge where the door collects - see what you find.

If that's the cause, it's just a gasket (cheap replacement by an appliance repair company.

I agree, absolutely do not use Drano. If it were a drain problem you would probably see it in your kitchen sink as well.

To get rid of the standing water, try advancing the dial to the end of the rinse cycle just before it goes into the dry cycle. Close the door and push the start button. Listen for water draining below your sink drain. If the water sound stops before the dial advances to the "dry" cycle, great. If not, or if you're not sure, turn the dishwasher off and repeat the last step - the idea is to get all the water out of the dishwasher. If you then advance the dial to the end of the dry cycle, just before "off", you may hear this sound again. If it's draining, great. If it's not, that's a valuable piece of info to give to your repair person.

If you have hard water, mineral deposits can build up and prevent water from draining. Buy Dish Washer Magic online and use once a month as directed. We had a repair man come out and our washer was not broken but the drain was almost completely blocked. This is what he told us to do. I hope this works and I hope it saves you some money. BTW, even if it doesn't work, it won't hurt anything.

Sounds just like mine which now sits collecting dirty dishes...til we hand wash them-[at any rate my husband insists it is a broken part in the machine, the engine, motor or something (he's the toolman and I just listen) The plumbing in our house is fine. I would like to throw it out, but alas he is going to fix it someday. SIGH

Sounds like the dishwasher is broken. Depending on how old it is you may just want to replace it rather than call a repairman.

My father was an appliance repairman. He responded to this sort of situation all the time. Even if it's the plumbing the appliance repairman will most likely be able to fix the plumbing because it's connected to the dishwasher. After all they connect the d/w to the plumbing. It's all a part of the same system.

I have had a dishwasher not drain properly and my father found that the drain needed to be cleaned out. I've also found that a lid has landed on top of the drain. Call the appliance repairman after first checking the drain on the inside of the dishwasher. Take out the bottom rack.

Definitely do not use Drano. It is not intended for dishwashers. Drano is for the sink/tub drain. If water stays in the sink as well as the dishwasher then you could use Drano to clear the sink drain. The dishwasher drains into the sink drain.

I've had this problem before, and it's always been some kind of valve in the dishwasher that has been broken I'd call an appliance repair person vs. a plumber.

Does your dishwasher have a filter? Have you ever cleaned it out? I would start there. If you don't know the answers, or how to, hopefully you have the manual. If not, google your dishwasher model and maybe you can find it. Good luck!
