I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good product to disinfect soft surfaces such as matresses and carpets. My son has frequent accidents on the floor and on the bed. (some are not so accidental!!!) I need a way to disinect without having to rent a carpet cleaner every single time.

What can I do next?

Go to the vet supply store they have several things that are for "puppy accidents" that work great and are a whole lot cheaper

One of the first best things I did when I got pregnant was buy a carpet cleaner. You can get very reliable ones for under $150. I don't know how much it costs to rent a machine, but I can tell you as the mother of 3 boys who also have frequent "accidents", not to mention the dogs, it was more than paid for itself over the years.

OdoBan. My daughter had a couple of accidents in our bed and I couldn't get the smell out for anything, even after trying everything. I am very sensitive to smells, so it was driving me crazy (my husband says he couldn't smell it-of course). Also, I have an 8 year old boy whose aim is not that great. And his bathroom constantly smelled, no matter how much I cleaned it. It's like it was under the edge of the toilet and maybe under the tank. After spraying it on our bed and all around and on my son's toilet, I can't smell urine at all! It's not just a deodorizer, it's a disinfectant. I was very sceptical when I bought it, but I'm addicted to it now. I found it at Wal-Mart, they were doing a demonstration. But I've looked for it since and haven't found it there. I found the website for it: http://www.odoban.com/OdoBanRetail/OdoBan_RTU_Odor_Elimin... It also says that it's available at Home Depot and Sam's. http://www.odoban.com/OdoBanRetail/Locator.html It does smell like eucalyptus, but it's not a bad smell (it just smells clean) and not like urine! Good luck, I hope you can find something that works for you.

To everyone.....
This is the most wonderful solution to get rid of stains....Get an empty spray bottle and fill with half Hydrogen Peroxide and half dish soap (I use Joy). It gets out everything from red wine on white carpet to spills on mattresses.

Can't think of anything in particular....but you could try some upholstry cleansers - Resolve? or even a carpet cleanser. If I were in your position with the two young children I would not rent a carpet cleaner I would invest in a nice little carpet shampoo/steamer. Because in the end....it will save you a lot of time, effort, and money. Also they make some wonderful plastic matress covers and I've always kept a thick rug beside the childrens beds.

The immune system grows stronger by coming in contact with germs. Germs are our friends. Too much disinfectant can actually be a bad thing. Research shows that children who aren't kept too "clean" actually have healthier immune systems. I would vacuum, and wipe, but leave the disinfecting to a minimum. Anti-bacterial products also can cause problems.

Hi B.
I have two friends that have children that still continue to wet the bed and things. They have tried many things to get the odor out but was fearful that they may have to end up replacing the mattress. However, about 6 months ago I told them of some new products that I was using and they decided to give it a try. I am very glad to say that they no longer have to replace the mattress b/c what they use actually does not just disguise the odor but eliminates it. I am not sure if you are also referring to stains in your carpet but they work great on that too. If you would like me to share a little bit more with you, please let me know! Thanks

Hi B.,

First of all, get a waterproof mattress pad for his bed. Then go to PetSmart and get Simple Solution. It takes urine and it's odor out of carpets and furniture. Works great! Good luck.

Sam's club carries a big bottle of "OdoBan', its an enzymatic & will destroy odors. Simple Green also claims it's for soft surfaces, but you have to wash (or dilute) right after :}

Try Resolve. Especially if the carpet has a stain. Follow the directions it should work. Get a mattress pad it will save your mattress. Use Lysol spray in the meantime. It gets the odor out and it disinfects.

I would use a natural product like Dr. Bronners which can be used virtually anywhere. You should be able to pick it up at your local health food store and it's pretty cheap too! Good luck.

Put your kid back in pullups until they can be more consistent. You will never get the urine smell out of your furniture and carpet. The urine soaks down into the pad under the carpet and there is no way to clean it. On the mattress or furniture, the urine soaks into the cushion. (if it is his bed put a plastic mattress cover on it.) When you clean, you are only cleaning the surface. One or two accidents, you can live with, but if this is happening repeatedly the kid just isn't ready.

My SILs kid had "accidents" on their couch all the time while watching TV - years later, the couch still smells of urine and so does her mattress.

White vinegar diluted 1:1 with water. Just get a spray bottle from the dollar store and you have gotten the best all purpose cleaner and disinfectant ever. I use it on my stove, in the bathroom, in my bath water.
And when you think about it: You are going GREEN!!!!

I have a 2 year old also and he's always spilling something. I've found that "OUT" (in the pet isle) cleans great. We used it when we had our St. Bernard inside and it smells great and gets rid of urine, vomit, milk, juice, etc. We used it when he was a baby and threw up a lot. We had a suede couch and it worked great on it. It smells so clean and gets the stains right out! Good Luck!!

I second the ideas for vinegar or baking soda, because they are all-natural and will not harm your children. If you would prefer to buy a product, my sister has had success with this product, and it is also all-natural: http://www.audreysallnaturalshoppe.com/store/WsDefault.as... . It's marketed for laundry, but my sister has used it for chocolate milk on a mattress as well as urine on the mattress.

Hope that helps!

Hi B.,

I'm a customer of a wellness company. They have awesome stain remover products that are SAFE(no harsh or harmful) chemicals. They also have the ONLY botanical disinfectant that kills HIV 1, salmonella, staph, etc. My disabled son vomited all over his carpet a few months ago and after using my Sol-u-guard, prespot, and Sol-u-mel, all the stains were gone and NO smell. It was amazing! If you'd like to know more, message me.
