Disposing of Diapers

I have the Diaper Genie II and I can tell you that it works FAR FAR BETTER than the first one. Yes, you spun the thing after each diaper, but it got stinky after the first couple of months and I could not get the stink to go away.
I live somewhere that I cannot just take the diapers outside to the garbage (wild animals) so I rely on my diaper genie II -- and I couldn't be happier. The secret is to follow the instructions that came with it and wrap each diaper up as tight as possible before putting it in. Then, when you empty it, try very hard to keep the "bag" that it goes into as small as possible to start with. I only empty mine when it is full (once a week or so) and I have no problems with any stink -- which is surprising because the changing table is in a bathroom that does NOT have an exhaust fan. I use plastic grocery bags, too. It probably isn't the best for the planet, but it is the best for my house. I tie them up really well, and then put them in the garbage can inside (our outside can is really far from the house). We usually take the inside garbage out about once a day, so odors have never been a problem.

I know a lot of people that take the poopy diapers straight out to the outside garbage can. I know that inconvenient, but if nothing else works...

I used to put my daughters diapers in a huge lawn bag (all the way at the botton) and put a knot right above the little stink bomb. You can add the next diaper to the same bag and tie another knot right above that one. I used to fit about 7 per lawn bag.

We have a little garbage can on our back deck that we use for cleaning up after the dog. After realizing that the diaper genie wasn't any good, we started throwing the dirty diapers out there too. Good luck.

I used the original diaper genie with my first two kids and noticed a smell even with turning the thingie. Now with my third, I will put the dirty diaper in a grocery bag, then in my trash can in the garage. Be it my trash can smells, but it doesn't put off near the odor the genie did.

After having 4 kids, here is what I have found works best in my home:

I take all non-stinky pee diapers and throw them in the regular trash can. All stinky diapers go into individual grocery store bags and get tied up and thrown into the outside trash can. This works because we have not yet changed over to reusable grocery bags, but I plan to have a separate garbage can when that time comes. If this is your situation, I recommend keeping a small trash can with small bags outside and using 1 bag daily to avoid the smell lingering for days.
