Do Allergies Cause Junky Coughs....

I'm not too familiar with allergies, but I'm also really confused as to why my kids both have gotten junky coughs without any obvious cold like symptoms..My 27 month old went through this last month, he had a clear slight runny nose and then whoala 2 days later a horrible junky cough...But the cough isn't consistent.. there was no horrible night coughing like when he has a cold...In fact, I only noticed the junky early in the am or when he was crying upset about something. His spirits were fine, no fever, and the cough lasted for about 2.5 weeks and then it was gone.

Now my 6 month old has the same thing, slight runny nose, he's sneezing, and now a junky cough this morning. But no coughing at night, no fever either...Only two things outside of a virus would be teething, and or allergies. For my 6 month old the sneezing and runny nose seemed to start after one of the gorgeous days here where I let him lay on the grass outside while I played with the 2 yr old. And both boys are cutting teeth so I don't know. Do allergies start this early for a baby, can teething cause a junky cough or is it just more likely I got it easy with this round of a cold???

What can I do next?

In a word, yes. Allergies can definitely cause a cough due to the drainage tickling the back of the throat. My 3 year old and I both have been having coughing fits since things started blooming. Allergies also can start almost at birth. One sign of potential allergies in a baby is having eczema. My son had it as a newborn and has had other allergies since he was very small.

It's mostly just annoying and will go away on its own in a few weeks but you can try using a nasal saline solution that will help keep his nose clear and wash out some to the pollen/allergens. Or, you can call your pediatrician and ask about an antihistamine.

hi there
apart from having a cold or two... because they are too young to tell for sure IF the allergies are environmental (pollen, hayfever) one thing you might consider are DUST MITES.. often, children and adults are allergic to them, actually it's the dust mite WASTE and not the actual mite itself that causes the allergic reaction. that being said... the symptoms can range from a clear runny nose (esp upon first awakening) sneezing in bouts and then.. all of a sudden the child seems fine the rest of the day.. to battle this dilema in the event that it is dust mites.. you can buy plastic covers for both the boxframe frame and mattress and even pillow coverings. additionally. put on clean pillow cases over the plastic coverings. Lastly, IF it was environmental like say pollen, I have learned that on high pollen days, you want to make sure you wash ones hair so as to remove all the pollen which in fact does stick to hair and clothing. of course, if you have pets... and they go outside.. also best to clean them up as their fur will also hold the pollen..
best of luck to you

absolutely allergies can cause a junky cough.

I am a Shaklee Independent Distributor and I have learned two things that might benefit you.
#1-Allergies are due to a low immunity. I can suggest vitamins if you are interested to help beef up the immune system.
#2-Cleaners for the home can cause allergies. I can suggest non-toxic cleaners.
#3-Absolutely your kids could be allergic to grass, but there are lots of allergy sources that have nothing to do with outside, blooming, etc... Even new carpet can give off fumes......

But, your kids could have just passed a virus to one another that is a runny nose.

My older son has allergies to dairy and wheat - if he gets some in his system, he gets flemmy (sp?) and gets a cough. You might want to check for that.

Hi Amy - sounds like you might have a couple of different issues going on. It could be allergies or a virus. Colds dont always present with a fever.

Sinus congestion and a junky cough can definitely go hand in hand. Coughing up stuff is actually a good thing but if it goes on for more than a week it could be a sign of infection. Talk to you doc and have her evaluate each child.
