Do I Stay or Do I go?....to Preschool

Last night we got about 8 inches of snow and it's still falling! My daughter has preschool 3 mornings a week. Today we stayed home because I HATE winter driving. It's not that I'm scared of the snow (I've been driving in winters for 13 years), but rather the *other* drivers make me nervous. I've also got a almost-3 year old and a 2 month old that I'd be taking with me. Was it selfish to stay home? I mean, it's not like she's upset or missing the SATs or anything....but I can't help but feel guilty...and wimpy.

What can I do next?

Ask yourself this question--is it worth it in the long run? If it were me,i'd stay home.

No, not selfish. Good parenting. Why take a chance when you don't have to? Good choice mom!

Preschool for a 3 year old is not worth placing you, her OR your baby in danger. Seriously. It's not like you're going out to administer CPR to a dying, stranded senior citizen! Keep it all in perspective, roll with it and enjoy the bonus time with your little ones!

I'm with ya. No sense riskin' your ENTIRE family's lives for 2 hours of playtime!
The day will come when it's not up to YOU whether they go or not, sigh. Enjoy the 'snow days' whenever you can get them!

Lesley,

You did the right thing so there is no need to feel guilty. NOT selfish at all.

Why chance getting into an accident? There will be several years ahead for your daughter to enjoy at school.

Your babies are your sweet cargo. I say if you are worried about the drive, then listen to your first intinct. I don't drive in snow and when I am a visitor driving in snow I hate it! I don't know how you guys do it!

Lesley, good for you for staying home. Don't feel guilty at all, you did the right thing! We just got 20 inches of snow, and Chicago Public Schools were actually closed (hasn't happened in 12 years!) When I went to pick up my 4th grader during the early part of the snow, I asked his principal if he would receive an unexcused absence if he ever didn't come to school the next few days because of the weather, in case school wasn't cancelled (which it hadn't been at that point). She said absolutely not-- they don't want anyone getting hurt or killed to try to come to school.

And even if your daughter had missed her SAT (lol maybe in 12 years it will be snowing like crazy again on that very day), there's always a make up test. Nothing other than a medical emergency is worth risking your life or your little sweeties' lives.

Hope you stay warm!
J.

I vote for staying home guilt free :) I too will not drive in the snow because other people just don't know how to drive....lol. Hubby and I do not take our girls out driving in bad weather period. If we need something hubby runs to the store otherwise we all stay safely at home. If it makes you feel better use this time to work on her color/number/letter recognition, read books together, work or writing her letters, anything they may be doing in class.

No, snow days happen every year. Once she is in first grade it may not be optional. Sometimes since we lived in the country at that time it was nearly impossible to get out of our driveway.
I hope the day was a good one. Drop the guilt about everything you'll still have a conscience but it won't make you feel ashamed or blamed.

I would stay home. No big deal if they miss a few days of preschool. Safety and peace of mind first. Don't worry about being wimpy. People are terrible in the snow. I worry abouthow others drive as well because you can't control them. I would just read a little extra to her on days when you stay home :)

Please don't feel bad. I thought it was very respectable for you to protect your children from others' notably poor winter driving. Good for you!
