I always see clean cut looking moms regardless of age with their make up on and hair fixed, does anyone else just do the same thing everyday and throw up the ponytail? I have really really long layered hair that actually looks decently hot when I fix it, but that takes like thirty minutes of straightening ugh talk about pain in the butt just to do to go to the grocery store. Plus it's annoying and gets in my way. My idea of getting dressed right now in the summer is jeans and a tank flip flops. Oh have I hit rock bottom of pure laziness? Anyone else feelin it?
Well, I ended up cutting my hair off because I was tired of putting it up in a ponytail...but also because it only takes a few minutes to fix every morning. I'm working part time right now...when I get home from work, I immediately put on shorts and a tshirt. I love watching "What Not To Wear" and they always talk about how it doesn't take that much to dress up. But yeah, even if I need to run errands, I'm still gonna wear shorts and a tshirt. I don't think it's laziness, it's just being comfortable. :)

I know exactly where you are coming from...As a matter of fact I spoke to my dr. about it yesterday. i am so tired of seeing these women that can go, go, go all the time and look good doing it. I feel drained all the time, seems like it takes everything I have to do the little thiings that have to be done so yeah the hair definately goes in a pony tail every morning. Its just so frustrating- by the time I get off work I don't want to do anything. My doc is doing some blood work- think I may need vitamins. I just want to be like everyone else...How do they handle life so well?

Even though I work at home, I always shower, wear light makeup and do my hair. My hair is easy, straight, one length, no irons, etc needed. It makes me feel better about me.
To me it is a matter of self-respect. I am more motivated to get things done at home and with the company when I am put together. When I look nice, no matter where I'm going, I feel better. My husband also likes coming home to a hot wife.
I pride myself on taking care of my body and being 48 passing for early 30's so yes, when I walk out that door, I look nice....sometimes a little summer dress, jeans/tee, capris/tee, etc.
Don't knock yourself as being lazy, some women don't have a routine and it does not mean you are lazy.

As for clothes, I am truly "mommyfied"...no shorts above my knee (God forbid I have to bend over), nothing too low -cut (again, God forbid I have to bend over), and flip flops. I am the epitome of laziness come the summer! Glad it isn't just me! :)

I didn't get out of my pj's til 5pm today. :)
But then I did get dressed and put on a little makeup because my sis and I decided to go grab dinner. If I have no plans, I like to stay in pj type clothes, they are more comfy. Sometimes I wish I could get up earlier, get dressed and made up so that if something comes up spur of the moment, I could get out the door faster. But I don't really want to enough that I am willing to be uncomfortable all day while just hanging out at home. I have to get dressed at least 4 or 5 days out of the week, if not more. So I don't feel bad about staying in pj's when I'm home. My husband works out of town and is rarely home, so getting myself all done up for him to come home to isn't even required. I do usually do makeup even just for the grocery store, because I like to. My makeup routine is under 10 mins though. And my hair is a cut that basically requires no styling now that it is short. I used to only wear it in a ponytail. That is why I started cutting it short actually, to be able to keep it out of my way and not getting on my nerves, without the perpetual ponytail. Maybe some people would call me lazy, but I don't really care. Neither does my toddler, who is the only one who sees me those days. He spends half his day running around naked as a jaybird because he likes to take his diaper off, so I doubt he is going to do much criticizing. :)

I think in Texas, we have a reputation for being some of the hottest women around of many age groups. I think it is because most women put themselves together when they go out or just before their husband comes home.
I'm older now and early retired, so I go to the grocery store without makeup, or great hair, and in jeans, cutoffs, whatever. I try to get on at least blush and mascara unless I'm exhausted because I look kinda sick without it.
I'd say, at least clean up pretty darn good for your husband coming home from work. I think it's kind of an insult to think he'd stay interested in you and look forward to seeing you like that when he sees other women out and about that are trying to tempt the husband's away -- and they look like a breath of fresh air.
Try it and see how your husband responds. Also, see if your manner changes for yourself (extra energy, self-esteem, etc?) If no on both counts, well, that is great! Maybe you both aren't bothered by and like the look. Hope you're not also letting your figure go though. You can count on gaining many pounds when you turn thirty something and more at forty something all by itself unless you cut calories and exercise. Yes, both!
On hair, my daughter complains about the same thing. At a certain age though, pony tails, to me, just look lazy and tooo young for the face. The pulled back pony tail doesn't even try to frame your face. But, she is busy working part time and moving and raising a youngster.
I suggest getting a beautician -- that you consult with first on a previous day or week -- on what the best style is for the shape of your face. Hair color too. Hopefully get a reference from someone whose hair style knocks you out. It's okay to ask strangers (starting with the conpliment). Then you don't have to choose between skinned back and long prep time. You might get a buzz off all the compliments from a shorter, shaped style with wow factor or 'attitude.' I hope you won't be one of those that tries to wear a pony tail long past your age for that because it seriously doesn't look good on a face starting to age.

My hair is always up and I only put pressed powder on my face and some blush.Of course showering before I leave the house is an absolute must. Don't feel bad for not having the desire to do it. I'm too busy and really don't think its that important to have my hair straightened, down and make up all done up to go out. I'm sure you look great!

I never look like I threw on whatever was clean! My hair is pulled back nicely usually because it's easier with kids and at my work. My husband appreciates me looking nice too. But mostly I feel better and more alive when I'm made up. I admit I do sometimes look at someone without a stitch of makeup on and wonder why they don't take five minutes for themselves? It's good to show your kids that you take care of yourself too, not just them.

Tank top/Jeans/Flip Flops? You just described the majority of people in california during summer, especially in the hotter cities, or the cities close to the beaches. I do my make-up everyday because its habit (some days I wear a little less, other days a little more). I try to do something with my hair although straightening it during the summer is a pain, so I have stopped doing it lol. My BF loves my long locks, so a short hair cut is not an option for me. I either do a side (low) bun, or a modern messy up-do. I think it depends on your definition of "put-together." I see lots of moms look good with all styles; no make-up, full make-up, pony-tails, short hair, long hair, full dress, or just a good pair of jeans. Maybe it's where I live, and people are so diverse, that my definition of put together is clean and not slobby (wearing shirts with holes in them/stains etc). If you feel good about yourself, and your spouse/partner loves you the way you are, don't worry about how other moms look, because they may be looking at you thinking how put together you look!

I am right there with you on a bunch of days, however, in my head I know our husbands like the way we look when we are "fixed up" too. Just don't totally give up on taking the extra time to do hair and make up. So many women pass on it until they are having problems in their marriage or get divorced and then it's all about "fixing up" again. I know it's all cosmetic and only what's on the outside but I do love it when my husband is clean shaven and dressed nicely. Reminds me about what I have in him (inside and out). I think it's the same for the guys with us.

I feel better when I take the time to dress nice and put makeup on. And it reminds my husband that I'm not just a mommy of 2 small kids but also his wife. And I love getting dressed up for him. If I'm going to just run and pick up a loaf of bread, no I don't get fully ready. I tend to plan a lot of my errands for the same day, so I do get fully made up on those days. Made up for me is foundation, mascara, eye shadow and liner. I will wear shorts, t-shirt and flip flops in the summer and in the in winter it's jeans and a hoodie. I only break out the "good" clothes when I'm not taking care of the kids.

Hi S.,
I have a short layered bob that takes anywhere from 5 (dry) yo 15 min (wet) to do. Then I also wear make up...but I do a 5 min face (What Not To Wear). Lately I have been wearing jersey skirts and dresses because I dislike the way my body looks in shorts.
You can find these dresses anywhere right now, I just picked one up at Walmart for $10. It takes less time to get dressed and it looks like a lot more effort than it is. I think however you decide to look is your biz as long as you like it. Just make sure its clean.

(i try to avoid those jobs).I do pony tails and if I am having areal bad hair day ball cap. you can put your long hair through the hole in the back. :) when I do go out I put on minimal make up and add mousse to my hair and pick the back. mine is curly when wet and straight when dry. people think I spent 30 min doing my hair and its more like 2 :) now most women will hate me cause I can cheat like that.
I really hate makeup in the summer cause you just sweat it off and it makes your face break out more. now I am in texas I dress like most texas girls shorts (mine are denim) sleeveless or tank and flip flops makes my wash load lighter. In the winter I wear jeans cowboy boots and either sweat shirts or sweaters. if you buy a sleeveless blouse and wear it with shorts you more less look dressed up in my opinion.

I do the full get-ready whenever I feel like it, even if it is just to go to the grocery store, and I skip it on the days when Iack the patience or energy to mess with it, even if we are having dinner with company that night. This would drive my sister who has never ever been seen outside the house without her hair and makeup done (not even on the way to the gym, and she is a natural beauty to boot so she could get away with it!), but it is what keeps me sane. I still get checked out in line at the post office with no make-up and pony-tail hair, so I figure I can't look that bad. Guys really don't care about hair and makeup if youre in shape and healthy looking, it is just something we do for other women anyway! I told my husband when the benefits of youth stop, I might haveto change my policy, but in the meantime, I say take advantage and capitalize on your natural, youthful beauty whenever it suits you to be a little lazy :)

I put make up on almost everyday but I work M-F and it has become such a habit to put makeup on that it takes me about 3-5 min to do it. When I am getting ready for work I have to blowdry and straighten my hair b/c if I don't then it becomes a huge frizzy mess. If I stayed home I probably would not do all that. I'd probably just wear my hair in a pony and not worry about makeup. On the weekends my hair typically will stay in a pony b/c we are doing so much running around it's just easier. You should do whatever you are happy doing. If it makes you feel better to put makeup on and do your hair then do it. If you aren't worried about it then don't.

Well i normally put make-up on before I go anywhere, but I have become much more lax about my hair. I will go two days without washing now and make it curly on the second day where I never did that before I had three kids. I think as we grow we learn and i don't think you have hit rock bottom. Fixing long hair is a pain the butt. As long as you get fancied up for those that matter (DH) then it is all good!
Oh and i will add that i have started wearing cute sun dresses on the weekends bc they are more comfortable to me than even jeans and t-shirts and they look like i thought about it (but really I didn't :) ).

I agree with Kellie B. It does make you feel good about yourself when you take care of you. And it doesn't have to take a long time nor do you have to wear the most expensive clothing.

I always where makeup but it only takes me 10 minutes to apply foundation, loose powder, blush, eyeliner, and eyeshadow. I don’t wear mascara as I have Asian eyes and doesn’t do much for me. I think the cosmetic industry has lead us to believe that we need to apply layers of makeup to look good. Really, all I do is dot foundation (with my finger tips) on my “trouble” spots – t-zone usually, eyes and around lips. Loose foundation is a must as it helps keep foundation in place and adds a nice palette for the blush and eye shadow. With the eyes I usually stick to a nice neutral pink or tan for all over coverage, a highlight color that I use for under the brows (brows shapes your face), a darker color for the lids and finish with eye liner. Sounds like it would take a while but it takes less than a couple of minutes - I use an eye shadow brush to apply highlight and neutral colors and eye-shadow applicator for the dark color. This spring I discovered Stila Smudge Pot (kitten color – light, shimmery bronze) that I apply all over and then apply eyeliner for when I’m really lazy =) I do spend more time if I’m getting ready for a special occasion – but not much since I enjoy a more natural look than wearing a layer of makeup. BTW – I used to work in cosmetics and I most the “tools” women use are not really necessary for an everyday look. The most gimmicky tool imo is the foundation brush.
Most women can get away with light foundation, loose powder, and mascara for a natural finished look. It makes me feel like I did put effort into looking attractive (for myself and bf) plus I always feel like I can face most things if I take those 10 extra minutes.
In regards to wearing flip flops – I wear them at the house but if I go out I try to at least where nicer slip on sandals – simple and it again adds a more finished look if that’s what you are wanting. Tanks with skirts are nice too, plus much cooler in the warmer weather.
For the hair, I normally put mine in a ponytail twisted into a bun. Sometimes I go for low ponytails on the side or two on each side or even two braids on each side. Doesn’t take but a couple of minutes for me and it’s a nice way to mix it up =)

I'm a working mom of a teen and a tween. When I am off in the summer, or go out to run errands on weekends, I do blow dry and spray my hair, put on makeup and I do not own sweats. That said, I don't own designer clothes and am not what you would call hip or fashion conscious. However, I like to look like I didn't just roll out of bed or something. When my kids were tiny, I was getting up, going to the office - hair, makeup, a dress. I never had the opportunity to get out of that habit. Even the few years that I was primarily a SAHM during the day, I did hair and makeup, even just to put my older one on/off the bus and drive the small one to Gymboree and preschool. At this stage of my life, my friends don't look like they just rolled out of bed either if I meet them at Shoprite or Walmart - and any time that I'm out and about, even at the gas station, I could run into students, their parents, my coworkers, my principal - and I do feel it's important to still look casually professional. Yes, I do wear capri's and beaded flip flops when I'm out, but I've always got earrings on, my hair in its usual style and everyday makeup on.

I try to look somewhat decent when I go out because I am in a MOMS club and it's very possible I could run into someone I know. I don't want to look like a total wreck.
I also try to freshen up before the hubby comes home.
I don't think your lazy at all. Being a mom means dressing for comfort and practicality.

The fixing up should be for you to feel good about yourself. You can even put your nice undies on underneath your sweats. I say this because it makes you feel better about yourself and you carry yourself differently. You don't have to put on the Hollywood look just some foundation or power, blush, lipstick and maybe mascara if it brings your eyes out and a little fragrance. It may take a bit at first but the more you do it the easier it becomes (makeup that took 30 minutes is now 5 to 10).
I mentioned this to a cousin who has a daycare business at her home and she told me that she felt very different about herself and that she felt really good and has continued to keep this up.
So take a little stock in yourself and like the other poster said we only take an interest when we are trying to find a new mate. Take an interest and keep the one you got interested. (He may think you are looking when you aren't.)
Good luck. The other S.

I recently gave up my career as an architect to become a SAHM and I have worn makeup since I can remember. I put myself together for myself and because it makes me feel good. I do my hair, whether it's up in a ponytail or blown dried and straightened. What's good for some isn't always good for others. I'm not vain, but some people just aren't comfortable going without makeup. For me, going out without eyeliner and just mascara is relaxed, but I always have foundation/power on. My mother is to blame; she always dressed to the nines to go out, whether it was to the grocery store or picking me up from school. So I suppose I just picked up her habits. However, just because I choose to wear makeup and do my hair doesn't mean that I look at others differently. Everyone is comfortable with what they are comfortable with. Don't ever judge yourself against others, nor judge others against what you would or wouldn't do.

You definitely are not lazy. I think even the clean-cut moms you see just had the day where they "felt" like doing it (lack of better words). How I am is I have thick red hair but looks really pretty when I straighten it but like you it takes like 30 mins to an hour give or take. Some days I just don't have the energy to straighten my hair. When I do and go out people could be saying the same thing, that I'm the clean cut mom just like other people say about them when they dress/fix up. All in all, I don't know many parents that dress up and fix up every single day they go out ;) And yea its summer, the outfit you described sounds perfect to me.
And Anne, I wish I could french braid my hair :P I love the cute pig tail french braids.

I guess when the kids are older (mine are 2.5 years and and infant) I will have more time to spend on myself, but for now, screw it :) I'm not out to impress anyone, and my self esteem is good enough that I don't need to layer makeup on to feel good about myself. I do what makes me comfortable. I used to look at other women and felt I had to be made up when I went out, but no longer! If I feel like putting on make-up, I do, if I don't, I don't. My husband doesn't care either way. In fact, when we aren't doing anytime but hanging around the house and I put on make-up he will ask why I am doing it. BTW - I don't have pretty skin, I have dark circles under my eyes and getting the old lady skin (not firm). Only if I am going to work or 'going out' do I put any effort in my hair, otherwise it is in a clip or ponytail - that has actually kept it healthier since I am not 'processing' as much. I also save on make-up since I don't wear it everyday. I love flip-flops, jeans, shorts or flirty skirt and a comfy t-shirt! I think it looks cute and sexy. At 42 I have finally become comfortable with myself, as far as how I look when I go out. It doesn't matter at all to me if I see someone I know when I am out and have on shorts, flip-flops and a t-shirt w/ no make-up on - it is quite liberating! Plus, how I look only affects me, no one else - if they pass judgement on me, shame on them :)

I'm allergic to tons of it and the stuff I'm not, well, I can think of better things to spend that kind of money on. I stopped wearing that long before I had kids. As for my hair, it's past my waist. Right now I have to keep it pulled back to keep the baby from pulling it and it getting in the way, and it's summer so it's kinda hot to leave it down. When the kids get past the grabbing stage and it's a little cooler I wear it down more and try to do something a little more than a pony tail. I don't like clothes you have to fuss over, if it is dry clean only I don't want it. I've always been like that though, kids or not. I guess the short is..not I don't bother with all the "fru fru" because I don't see a reason for it. I want something I can play with my kids in and be comfortable. Every day is not a fashion show ;)

Letting my baby sit and scream so I can my hair and makeup done for the grocery store, just does not seem worth it to me. If you're not rolling out of the house in your pajamas, you haven't hit rock bottom of laziness! If you're dressed and your hair is brushed and in a ponytail, in my opinion, you're doing just fine!

This is how I feel. As long as you don't look like an unkempt slob and are clean and neat looking..........YOU GO GIRL! This get all fixed up every single day just seems like a throw back to the 50's to me. I bet you look cute in your jeans and tank top. If your flip flops are cute I think you are styling!

I'm feelin' it.... I have long hair, too, and "fancy" for me is a French braid, LOL. I even took to showering at night & letting my hair air-dry while sleeping, so that I spend less time in the morning on it.... Dress up (outside of work) is jeans, clean tennis shoes, and a nice, spot-free t-shirt (which doesn't usually last too long with my son, who loves playing in the dirt).....
If you want to dress it up a little, get yourself some nice/pretty/sparkly barrettes & just pull it back off your face or something. :) I'm all about less fuss!

I only recently started "fixing myself up" and it feels good. It's not everyday, but I plan for it. Thank goodness I don't wear make up b/c it's time consuming to apply.

I try to attempt something for myself - I apply a tinted lotion, some bronzer, concealer around my eyes or else you would think that I was a raccoon, mascara, and I usually do something simple with my hair. My clothes are very casual - tanks/shorts/flip flops - it is summer! Unless I am actually going some place, I do not feel the need to dress up. Go with whatever makes YOU feel good!

Oh Im feelin it lol. I am a SAHM mom to two wonderfully energetic toddlers. I am lucky to get out of the house having remembered to brush my hair lol. It takes me some time to get both of them ready and so I just tend to come last. I dont worry about whether or not I have make up on or whether or not my clothes are fashionable for the moment. I wear what Im comfy in, which tends to be capris and a tank or a tshirt. My hair is long so I like it up since its hot out....and Im always in my flip flops! My DH doesnt have a prob with it at all. The times I do get all dolled up are the nights we go out, which are sometimes few and far between. But, on those nights, it takes me awhile to get ready and my DH always says, "you know you dont need make up to look good. you dont have to wear it if you dont want to." But, sometimes I like to put make up on and stuff...just not for trips to the store or the park or something like that! I think more ladies should feel beautiful without having to paint their faces all the time. We should feel good about the way we look naturally!

It's definitely not laziness...it's summertime! I've never been one of those people who looks great without a trace of makeup on, so I usually do put on a light foundation with concealer over the trouble spots. Sometimes mascara and eyeliner...sometimes, none...whatever I'm in the mood for. My typical outfit of the day right now is comfy shorts, t-shirt and flip-flops unless I'm going out. I usually do try to put something halfway decent on like a sporty skirt/graphic t-shirt or capris. It just makes me feel more self-confident when I know I look "put together". I think it's all about what works best for you!!

I did not even know how to use makeup until a few years ago. I get "fixed up" in that I'm dressed for work every day (usually slacks and a blouse with heels) but that does not take any more time than putting on pajamas. I still usually only wear mascara, but I don't really need makeup yet. I also keep my hair very short so don't have to brush it most of the time. I could not stand the upkeep of long hair (or the weight!). :) On weekends I do get dressed, but in jeans and a regular top. I refuse to wear my husband's t-shirts outside. Since having kids, I try to make myself somewhat presentable, usually meaning I'm wearing all the required articles of clothing and my hair is more or less lying flat. :)

Ditto everyone. LOL
Hair in a pony tail or hat.
tanks tops and shorts.
Flip flops.
Make up. At least eye liner. Lipstick.
Wet just shampooed hair out the door.
Who has time to use a hair dryer? My hair is thick, takes all day to dry naturally. 1/2 hour with a dryer. No time for a dryer! LOL
I do not dress up... everyday. Ugh.
Unless going to a function.

I never use makeup unless it's a special occasion (i.e. weddings, parties) and my hair usually starts out down but ends up in a ponytail by noon =P I've been going through a phase where I've been wanting to fix myself up more though so your question really interested me! I want to start using a little makeup everyday (work, church, etc.) but seriously, I think I'm too much of slob. Maybe when I lose the last of the baby weight... ;p

Who has time for that?!?! Im a mother of 2 girls and i must admit i spend more time wrestling them than i do worrying about myself.... if all 3 of us looked like slobs people might start talking :P I havent worn make up since middle school (except on my wedding day and that was hell) my jair is ALWAYS pulled back b/c i get hot too easy. i will some times dress up my hubby says hes likes when i do but normally thats like once a year.... im not going to change the way i look just b/c all the other pta moms waste time getting all dolled up. I look at it as more time i get to spend with my kids!
P.S. even tho my hubby thinks its nice to see me all dolled up every once in a while he says im still more beautiful with out anything!

I have NEVER been one to "fix" my hair anything special. I have naturally straight & thin hair. Right now it is long enough to put in a ponytail. Sometimes I leave it down, and sometimes I pull just my "bangs" back in a hairband. But now that it's so dang hot I just pull it up in a full ponytail.
I hardly ever use a hair dryer on my hair either. I take my showers at night during the week & just brush it. I don't have time for all that mess... lol Heck I have never even owned makeup. :)

Oh, i totally feel you. I'm a working mom, but I work in advertising, so there are days I have to look decent (suit, makeup, hair done and all), and then there are days when I know I won't be facing any clients and can look like I just rolled out of bed and come into work. In reality, I would like to look more "ready" and "fixed up", but like you also said, that takes an additional 30 minutes of my time (minimum) to get that look. When you have a toddler and currently pregnant with another one like I am, the extra 30 minutes is just much needed sleep I don't otherwise get. Not to mention, with it being the summer months, the heat and sweat helps to melt my makeup and eyeliner by the end of the day so I look like a panda bear. Not necessarily the best look....

I hardly ever fix myself up recently..I have a 6 month old and a 6 year old both boys and a hubby, and another child on the way..there is too many chores and the 3 guys in my life are too demanding right now for me to pamper myself. I leave the house with no makeup and hair in a ponytail 13/14 days, but do try to have a cute, comfortable outfit on. My husband works from sunup to sundown so I am going to have to wait on his schedule for the opportunity to get out AND be dolled up, but you should try at LEAST once or twice a month to spend the 2 extra hours getting ready and you will probably enjoy it once again enough to do it more often
Oh, and yes, I'm not a fan of grocery shopping either. Thank God for the Schwan man
