Do You Have Home Surveillance System That Is Unmonitored?

Hey everyone!

My thought (just a thought right now) is that I would like to have a wirless security camera on the outside of our home due to a lot of car theft. I do not plan on paying a company to monitor monthly and would like to purchase the equipment and have it installed. I would liket to have the video recording option. Does anyone have security camera installed in their home? If so what brand of equipment are you working with or you know to be the best?

Yep we have 4 cameras got the system from Costco. Cameras were junk so my hubby bought more since more than 2 broke w/ in a month. But the computer and recording device have worked great. We have a wireless set up so I can view all 4 on the TV just by switching to an unused video input.

I love it! Home all day with the kids by myself I love looking when I hear something suspicious or when someone knocks on the door. I take a peak if its someone I don't know I won't answer. We also have an RV access on the side of the house in the backyard that the kids ride their bikes on. I can't see at all from the house. We have one camera set to "watch" that area so I don't have to be out there every second...

You can get a set up where you monitor your camera yourself on a computer inside your home. We don't have one at the moment but hubby was looking at some at Best Buy and they were not that out of line on pricing... less than $500. Wireless camera with night view and the footage is sent to a computer inside for your viewing.

We have the security system but we don't pay for monitoring. It is set up with the babysitter alarm where it beeps if any window or door is opened.

If you live in an area where there are a lot of car thefts, you are probably paying higher premiums for your auto insurance. If you do this, check with your agent or insurance company to see if there is a discount on your insurance for getting this. Good luck!!!

We have a monitored system but also have a Mole in our family room. It was easy to set up ourselves and records anything that happens. We can pull the video up online, on our phone and it is saved on a website.

We plan to get one that will feed to a video recorder or our computer-have not decided yet. Before you do though check with your town for rules. We must have a neighbor sign that he does not feel invaded and must post a sign outside indicating the property is being monitored by video surveillance. Also, since we are on the corner, we have to make sure we are not aimed to see across the street into the homes.

I don't have a security camera, but we do have the equipment and are just not having it "monitored". Same reason: we just didn't want to pay for someone to call 911 when we could do that. We have it set so that it beeps if a window or door opens (and show you by a red light WHERE something was opened), and if someone were to break in or whatever without the code, the alarm goes off. It's a very loud alarm (we found out when we first moved there and I'd misplaced the code). So....no, it's not monitored, but it'd definately wake up people inside and probably some neighbors too. Never really thought about a camera though, but if it's just car thefts in your area it'd make sense...

I have one that is monitored: Its wireless, can be accessed by my cell so I can see what is going on inside the home- or outside if you want the camera outside. Also: fire alarm- which I loved the idea! It is for when we AREN'T home to dial 911- not for when we ARE! And even if we are home, I have two little children and would like to concentrate on their safety first so it is sort of nice to have a back up for someone else to worry about calling 911. We also have a 3 yr old that opens doors so we have ours set on instant alarm during the night so we would be woken immediately in the event he would open an outside door. Our equipment is top of the line, doesn't interfere with our phone or cable and we got it during a promo so was free. The monitoring service is 29/month which was one of the best prices we found. We do have a monitored home security system and I would never go back to an unmonitored system. We are thinking of getting a camera for the front door and the back yard as we back up to a fairly busy road and it would not take much for someone to jump the fence and get in from the back. We have not decided if the camera will be tied into our current system or stand alone. One big advantage to having a monitored system is that when you are not home they will contact emergency personel for you, yes when you are home you can all 911 your self but what happens when you are gone and someone breaks in or the house catches fire? Ours monitors for breakins, fire and medical emergencies and is only $24/mo. We also get about a 20% discount on our homeowners insurance so there is an added bonus. Look into both options. I like knowing that my home is secure even when we are gone.
