Does a Certain Kind of Alcohol Make You Crazy?

Do you or do you know someone that can drink a certain type of alcohol and it makes them go nuts, like with anger or whatever?

For example, my neighbor can drink vodka and be normal, but if he drinks whiskey he gets bullet proof and aggressive. Why is that?
Is it the way the alcohol is fermented, the sugars, what?

Seems to me alcohol is alcohol, this phenom doesnt happen to me, I react the same to all of them.

What gives? School me.

What can I do next?

Alcohol is alcohol.
What might influence mood/behavior is the rate of absorption and % amount of alcohol per drink. Tequila is usually had in shots---boom, boom, boom. Instant effect. Wine is sipped slowly and the slow absorption might lead to a drowsy feeling etc.

Yes, different alcohols affect people differently. I've noticed that with friends and family. Not sure why. Beer makes me feel fat, slow, and lazy (yuck). Champagne kind of makes me feel bubbly. Rum makes me feel relaxed. Kamikazes were like kool aid to me, goldschlager always ended in being unconscious, which was fine at the end of the night at a friends, but I was wary to never partake of that with people I didn't know well or in a place that I wasn't 100% sure was safe.
In my younger years, I could drink vodka (literally) all day/night: at the peak of my drinking I would have 2 pints of straight vodka everyday before 3pm, and that was just to warm up to get in the mood to go out to actually drink, which I would do all night (7 days a week). I was just a happy go lucky, pretty silly, but always happy kind of drunk. Everyone will tell you that I was great with one liners, jokes, stories, etc. I made lots of friends very easily on vodka nights.
HOWEVER: only two little shots of tequila, and I could be just the worst, most angry "B" in the world. It made me very hot and uncomfortable, which made me very aggravated, I couldn't stand the touch of clothes or anything else. If someone touched me (even friends), they'd get swatted. I distinctly remember 2 incidents where I felt like I was out of my body, watching myself and thinking "Shut up! You're such a B!" but to no avail, the mouth was just going to town. I am not mean, but I heard and "saw" myself be so cutting! Tequila, to ME, is a take off your clothes and/or fight kind of drink, and I do steer clear of it. The only way I can touch it is if I'm grilling with it. I'll make great strawberry or banana margaritas for friends, but as a responsible adult, I won't ever be caught drinking it. It doesn't work for me. I do drink occasionally (mixed drinks, usually vodka based, but no tequila). My brother is the same way: he can drink beer and be mellow, he can drink vodka and be happy, friendly, funny, charming, but if he drinks a single drink of tequila, there will be a fight and some broken things. 100% of the time. (He, as a responsible adult, doesn't drink anything at all anymore).

I have heard that there is a gene but don't know much about it. I've heard that Indians can't drink liquor at all, and my grandpa tells about in WW2 the soldiers were forbidden to talk to the Native Americans that were code speakers, and no fraternizing was allowed. Turns out that the soldiers liked to drink when they could, but the Native Americans would go crazy if they got their hands on the liquor, would try to fight and tried to swim back home (across the ocean), so the officers just kept them separate. My grandpa never drank a drop of alcohol in his life, but he is 1/2 Cherokee and I wonder if that's why we can't handle tequila. I don't know, just a theory on why my family reacts that way.

If my husband drinks too much or mixes, he can get very mean. He is fine if he drinks a few glass of wine slow or a few beers.

My dad seems to think there is a gene. I have never gotten mean, i either (with too much) giggle or cry. I have a feeling my dad is on to something. I know a few people that get mean. It really may be a gene.

I can't drink gin. It deactivates the "creating memories" part of my brain. My husband can't drink tequila for the same reason. I can drink whiskey all day, every day, and suffer not at all, I say it's the red hair :D

I don't know the deal but it's tequila for me. I've done shots of all types of alcohol and grain alcohol funnels in college etc and nothing makes me act like I did after drinking tequila. Kinda like Catwalk said. I had it twice and never again!!

Gin is evil. I don't know why, I get sloppy messy drunk, my husband gets out of control with rage and emotion (I have one memory we refer to as The Gin Night).

It is usually about how it goes down. I love big beers, like beer with more than 10% alcohol. A fair few of them go down so easy and I can easily become drunk. At the moment my husband has a keg of Russian Imperial Stout in one of the refrigeration units downstairs. If he wasn't entering it in the fall I would drink the whole thing in a matter of weeks. I love how it tastes. He also has a very nice Dubbel down there too. That has been in the keg for six months, I still haven't emptied it.

What you seem to be describing is drunk as apposed to drinking.

What I am saying is it seems your neighbor likes the taste of whiskey over vodka.

I have no idea, but all I know is I can no longer drink Gin or Tequila. Gin made me mean. Tequila made me... gosh, don't know how to describe - I guess an out of control sleepwalker?? FRIGHTENING. I'm glad others have similar answers for these two -- meaning there must be SOME scientific explanation, right?! I guess the main thing is to know when to stop drinking the things you know don't agree with you, 'cause clearly there's something about Gin and Tequila ;) I'm just glad I still get to enjoy the occasional vodka martini and bloody mary!

Allergies are a culprit. Depending on how the alcohol is processed and what ingredients are used for instance, some people have sensitivities and it can cause weird behaviors and physical reactions. Histamines found in certain wines can give people serious knock-down migranes long before they're drunk as one example. People with hidden grain allergies can have issues with beer and vodka for instance..

Well, I don't get crazy but tequila gives me a different kind of buzz and a different kind of hangover. Can't do it anymore so I switched to vodka drinks. Plus tequila gives me heartburn... Talk about feeling like an old fart!

I believe it has to do with how your body processes the alcohol. So each person is going to react differently. Each type of alcohol is made with a different process and different ingredients, so your body will process them differently.

I'm a rum girl - I can go to town on rum... be very fun and upbeat. Straight or in mixed drinks. Rum is my preference, but I actually don't drink it very often anymore.

Vodka, on the other hand, is my friend. The closest I've ever gotten to blacking out while drinking was on vodka. It messes with my mind, and I can't remember the order things happned in (assuming I'm remembering everything). Vodka turns the fun upbeat rum girl into a loose party girl. Yeah, I don't drink vodka now either! ;-)

Beer is what I generally drink nowadays. Nice mellow mood, but it also depends on the beer (one beer from Humboldt County just puts me to sleep). I usually only drink one or two in a sitting (socially drinking with friends).

All alcohol is not created equal. There's a reason that cheap tequila is so cheap... and a reason that expensive stuff is so expensive. Your body will process those differently as well, so it REALLY depends on what you're drinking. BTW, I steadfastly refuse to drink tequila. Don't ever want to try it (seen too many people sick on it), not even a margarita (give me a daquiri baby!). And Everclear. In my younger years, my friends used to add Everclear to their mixed concoction to give it a kick and I refused to drink (so they'd start adding vodka to mine... tricky tricky...)

great question.

I'm good with vodka and cranberry, and i'm good with a seven and seven, but any other type of mixed drink like for example a rum and coke I"m not ok with, I get very very depressed and angry.

I don't know enough about the difference in run vs vodka, but the amount of alcohol in each drink is the same, maybe the proof is differerent?
maybe lighter/clear is better for me??

dang it now i might go google it.

yeah google was no good, maybe someone else wants to try.

I don't know what gives, but it sure works that way. My dad was horrible when he drank jagermeister and we called him the jager-monster. My mom gets pass out drunk on one glass of wine but can drink whiskey all night. I get sleepy with wine, seriously drunk on tequila and have an insanely high tolerance for anything else.
