I was wondering if someone had a child with OCD? The doctor is sending my son to a developmental therapist to see. Malachi MUST close a door if it is open. He is constantly playing with his privates. When you ask him to stop he freaks out on you. He also has Myoclonic Epilepsy and is developmentally delayed. I was needing some advice on what I can do as a mother to help him.

I don't have a child with OCD, or atleast right now I don't think so, but I am married to a man that suffers from OCD. Like the other post says, my husband also has a horrible problem with nail bitting. This is from his being OCD. He keeps chewing on them because he 'can't ever get them even'. He focuses on certain topics for a LONG time...like lately he has been on energy saving light bulbs, and I swear the man has been on the internet for HOURS over the past couple of days research them and EVERYTHING about them. It's kinda funny. So, yeah the door shutting thing could be part of an OCD thing, but my husband has never taken medicine. He went through a little bit of counseling as a small child, but it never helped. I guess it depends on just how bad he suffers from the OCD. Maybe the combination of the OCD along with the delays in development make it worse...I'm not quite sure. I will say that I know several people that live with OCD without therapy or drugs. I would say listen to what the therapist and doctor say, but use your mom judgement. You will know what is best for your child.
Good Luck and God Bless

Hey K.,

This has nothing really to do with the OCD, but my little girl was having severe allergies!! I didn't know what to do, she ALWAYS had puffy red eyes, runny nose~~constantly in the dr's office!! WELL, we took her to a more natural dr. and he asked us to look into the cleaning products AND washing detergent that we were using!! So we did and we were shocked to find out that EVERYTHING had very harsh chemicals and toxins!!! MOST caused respitory problems and such!!! My husband and I started looking for a way for us to get safer, healthier products into our home!! AND we found a company that researches, developes AND manufactures replacements for what you could be using now!!! They are also about 30-40% less expensive!!! AND I now earn a significant income from home with them also!!

ANYWAY, didn't mean to go all out, but I do understand with the allergy thing~~and I am a mom myself and love to share with other mothers looking for a way to earn an income with their children by your side AND get safer, healthier products in your home!!

Hi K.-

I have a son that is 8 yrs old with High Functioning Autism and OCD. I also suffered with OCD. My son is on Focalin XP and we just started him on the patch Daytrana about a week ago. He sees a psychiatris and psycologist. He was diagnosed at 18 mos and started going through therapy and early intervension which has helped a great deal. Even though he still has problems with it I can't even begine to think how life would be if we hadn't strated working with him as early as we did. Between him and I we totally drive my husband up the wall. We have some issues that are the same and some that are different. It kind of helps that I have it too because I can completely understand what he is going through and his reasoning. As for advise, meds and therapy do help but it is always something that is going to be there. Another piece is to pick your battles. If it is something small that isn't going to hurt him, let him do it. Ex. my son has to always have socks on. He would bath in them if I let him. He waers them to the pool and out on the beach. But as long as he changes them so that they are clean and he keeps his nails clean and clipped I let him wear his socks.

I have a son who is 14 and suffers from OCD, Bipolar Disorder and ADHD. What is helping him right now is therapies through our Chiropractor. He is doing eyelight therapy among other things. I have noticed a difference in him. There is also a fairly new thearpy called Interactive Metronome. www.interactivemetrnome.com and www.eyelights.com. I would recommend you contact a chirporactor near you and see if he works with any of these therapies. I hope this helps and good luck. I know how hard it is.

Hi K..

My oldest has anxiety and depression disorders and ADHD, he has mild OCD type behaviors too like picking at this nails. Mental health issues are always rough.

I don't have any specific advice for OCD but play therapy seems to work great in lots of situations. My son attended a therapist for 3 years when he was younger and it really helped all of us. The parents would meet with the therapist after every 3-4 visits with the child. My son started when he was 6, not sure about a boy as young as 3 but you could ask.

If you live in the houston area send me a PM and I will send you the therapists name. If she isn't on your insurance she can recommend someone else.
