I am a single mom who lives at home with my daughter and my parents.. My daughter is that the age when she gets into everything..She will find things so she can climb on the kitchen table..she has a toy room but that doesn't seem to interest her. So I am looking to see if anyone has a crib or play pen for sale so I could put her in so I can clean house or get school work done.. I went to the salvation army, they had over 10 play pens there..When I asked how much they were they said they weren't for sale due to safety reasons..So if anyone donates one to them people can't buy them.

What can I do next?

Dear J.,

Let me start by saying that I'm sorry I no longer have my playpens to offer to you. Mine were mainly to take to the homes of others for sleeping purposes. However, when my "baby" was born, I used my big one to put the older two in when they wanted to play with little toys that would be a choking hazard for her (like legos). One I gave to a friend when she had her baby several years ago. The other I held onto until just a couple years ago. My suggestion if you really want a playpen would be to look for yard sales, especially those that advertise items. Or like suggested below, the Pennysaver.

As for gates, my husband bought one, and I thought he was crazy. What in the world would we need that for? Well, I have worked graveyard since my son was born nineteen years ago (part-time until my baby was in school full-time). I slept when they slept. My son was really good about coming to get me when he woke up. Then he figured out he didn't have to come get me. And I found Lifesaver crumbs all over my house - what a mess! Not to mention all the other potential problems and dangers of his being unattended - so out came the gate. We started putting it in his doorway when he was asleep, so he had to call for us to come get him when he awoke. However, my son fairly quickly figured out he could hook his toes on the ventilation holes in the gate and climb out. So my husband used some old panelling to cover the gate. Then he figured out how to throw his leg over it, so we had to put it up higher - but then he could scootch out under it. So we basically had to put it at just the right height so that he couldn't throw his leg over it, nor could he worm his way under it. The gate was great, but it was a science to get it just right to serve it purpose!

Figure out what will work best for your purposes . . .

Good luck!
B.

You might try the Pennysaver.

Have you tried pennysaver? I would offer you my extra crib, but we're planning to have our kids fairly close and may need it. Also, you can buy baby gates for $10 at target and walmart. If you have a safe room, they work perfectly.

I wouldn't suggest putting her in a playpen- it's not good for her sense of initiative, but I won't go into that again. At the age when she gets into everything that is exactly what she needs to do- and you need to set and enforce the rules. My daughter climbs onto the chairs, but she knows that the rule is to sit on them, so she does- of course, she occasionally stands on them or tries to climb onto the table, and I tell her "sit on your butt or get down" once, and if she doesn't I put her on the floor- then she cries and I walk away. It's better for you to (as hard as it is to do) start to teach her instead of penning her in. And if you are still struggling a gate is a much better (and cheaper!) choice.

Hi J., There is a polace called Childnre's Orchard. They are a second hand store for baby items, toys, clothes, etc. They are in Rancho Cucamonga, but if you go onto the website (childrensorchard.com) you can get the phone # and exact location. It might be the same way there, unable to re sale play pens, etc., but you can always call and ask before driving up there. Also, great place to buy clothes (they buy clothes to see in their stores, so they are in great condition!) I hope you find this helpful.
