I'm 18.5 weeks pregnant and my brother found a 4 pound shelf mushroom (aka "chicken mushroom) in his backyard. He gave me some of it and I'm going to batter and deep fry it at our cookout today. I'm dying to try it but eating wild mushrooms while pregnant sets off a red flag to me. My dr's office isn't open today so I can't call them, so I thought I'd ask here and if no one knows for sure..then I won't try it. I've tried to find a specific answer on the internet but can't. If anyone here knows or if you know of any websites that have the answer, I'd appreciate it! TIA!
I didn't try it. I decided it wasn't worth the risk. And by the way, although some of you were very nice and helpful and I appreciate that VERY much..I think some of you were downright hateful and that's not what I came here for. I came here to AVOID calling a health professional. Read my question again..I said if no one here knew for sure then I just was not going to eat it. Believe me I know the nurses and doctors are busy; I lost a baby and almost DIED myself because they're so busy, okay??? I'm cautious about every little thing I do while pregnant, which is why I ASKED first before I even tried a bite of something questionable. How can you fault or judge me or think I am a terrible mother for doing that?? For you KNOW IT ALLs who just come on here to make other women feel like crap...find somewhere else to do it! Yeah, I'm a b*itchy pregnant woman...so what's YOUR excuse?
As long as you think it's fine, I wouldn't worry. Personally, I don't eat mushrooms that dont' come from the store because I don't know enough about which ones are safe and which ones aren't. But if you know that this chicken mushroom is edible then by all means go for it!
What about calling one of the "ask a nurse" hotlines thru hospitals....Sorry I cant offer more advise.

I don't think that's a good idea. I wouldn't eat it if I were you. If you don't know much about it, there's no point in putting your baby at risk.
Also I wouldn't call an ER for this type of thing. They are way too busy to answer a question like this and they won't tell you over the phone its okay to eat it because they haven't seen it and there are liability issues.
Even if I wasn't pregnant I wouldn't eat a mushroom out of my yard...
I would never eat any mushroom unless I took a class in knowing the difference between them. There are so many kinds that will shut your liver down within days.

i would tell you to call your local er and they will have a nurse line or let you talk to a nurse
well, you aren't giving much time for research or responses. If something is setting of a red flag why would you risk it? Is it really that important to eat a mushroom that you don't know anything about? Go to the store and buy safe mushrooms and fry those up if you really must have a mushroom. You might as well start practicing giving up small things for your child, is it really such a sacrifice?
any wild mushrooms are not adviseable to eat durning pregnancy because you may be too sensative to the enzymes in them.
It's been 15 years since I had this come up but that's what my obgyn told me back in 1992-94 because he knew we went "hunting" with a dear friend of his.
