We want to start our son in music lessons and I'm wondering what other options are available for 5 year olds besides the obvious ones I can think of; piano, violin. If you have experience with your child taking lessons, please let me know. We live in Land O Lakes.

Thanks!

My sons began piano when they were 6 - most teachers said they wouldn't teach boys until they were 6 because they don't sit & pay attention as well as girls (they'll teach girls at 5). They have learned an amazing amount in 16 months & play beautifully. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Perhaps a music introduction class where you experiment with different times of instruments and sounds could be good groundwork for making the right decision. I'm a music teacher in Land O Lakes and have group sessions for 3-6 yr olds. In class we experiment with rhythm and ear training, self-expression with diverse musical genres and we play on different percussion instruments including African drums, cymbals, bells and string instruments like the guitar, violin, viola and piano. Every few weeks we introduce a new instrument while laying out the basics for future private instruction. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in recieving more information and I would gladly assist you. My kids are very happy musicians in class. :)

Music seems to be a big topic right now - I love it!!! I have two boys and both of them love to play the guitar. Katherine Hintz lives off of 54 (not sure if it is in Land O Lakes or considered Lutz) and she does guitar lessons. She is amazing!!!! My child goes for music classes (focused on all kinds of instruments and learning rhythm, etc.) he is 3 and my 5 year old loves to go to the classes as well. It may be a good way to find out if he is interested in the guitar before forking out the money for it.

You can reach Katherine at ____@____.com or ###-###-####. She is extremely resonable on her pricing!!

Good luck!
Sam

Hi, Depending on the child it is sometimes possible to start on drums or guitar at his age. Bigel Music (located on Bruce B Downs Opposite Wharton High School) can do a free evaluation of your son to determine which instrument may be appropriate for him. Their number is ###-###-####

Hi S.,

I am not sue if you have managed to find a music class for your son. I am a Kindermusik educator and it is a brilliant program for children from birth to the age of 8yrs. Unfortunately, I am not currently teaching as we have recently moved to Florida and I have not set up my studio as yet. Kindermusik is a great program that you can enter your child into at any stage. They have a really good class for your sons age group called Imagine That. They learn a lot about music and movement and play a vast range of percussion instruments. The next age group is called Young Child and this is where they are taught to read music (in a fun way) and learn to play the recorder. Have a look at the Kindermusik website: www.kindermusik.com for further information and for educators in your area. I highly recommend this program! I hope that this helps!
Regards
A.

Take him to a music store and let him see all the different instruments. I know of someone that had their 5 year old playing sax. It should be his choice, not yours. No child should be made to take lessons unless they really want to. Even if he chooses the drums. Let him lead the way and you follow. You will find you have a healthier happier child.

Hi - I actually started taking piano lessons at the age of 5. I now teach piano lessons and have had students who are 4 1/2. The best way to gauge if they are ready - Can they sit for at least 15-20 minutes and focus on one thing. Do they know their alphabet A-G and numbers 1-4? If they can do those things, then they are ready to start. I start most younger kids on a 15 - 20 minute lesson unless they have exceptional attention skills and we will go a full 30 minutes, breaking it up with 15 -20 mins of instruction and 10 of a reinforcement activity like a fun workbook or something else.
