Does He Need More to Drink?

My baby is 1 week away from his 1st birthday. I just weaned him from the breast about 3 weeks ago, but got ahead with pumping so he is still getting breastmilk. I'm working on phasing out the bottle and giving him a sippy cup. He's down to 1 bottle/day, all other breastmilk and juice he gets in a sippy cup. Over the last week, I've noticed he does not drink as much breastmilk as he used to. Up until then, he was very consistently drinking 6 oz, 4x/day. Now he's down to 6 oz 3x/day- and tonight, he didn't finish his 3rd serving of 6 oz. He eats solids very well at breakfast, lunch and dinner. How much milk should he be drinking? How much fluid should he get in a day? If he isn't drinking his usual 24 oz of milk/day, since it's summertime, should I be giving him more water or juice to make sure he has enough fluids?

What can I do next?

As long as he is having some good wet diapers and isnt constipated, which is common too, and nothing to worry about, then I would think he is fine. My 11 month old is drinking less too, so its a normal thing. She has been a bit constipated, so I just give her some extra water whenever I can. You cant force them to do what you want them too, I have learned that thru the years, so go with what he wants, they do know what they want and need. Good Luck!

Hi L.. What's probably going on is that your son is realizing that he doesn't need breast milk as often anymore. My doctor told me to give my son 24 oz. of whole milk when I weaned him. Just try and subtract the number of ounces of whole milk from the amount of breast milk he is still taking, and he should be getting enough milk. You can still give him 6 oz of juice or water too if you're worried he's not getting enough fluids. I hope this helps.

I am sure he is getting enough fluids, as long as he is having wet diapers several times a day he is getting enough. Also, if you give too much juice and milk it fills them up and they won't eat enough solids. I give my son, who just turned 1, a sippy cup of watered down juice after his meals and he gets an 8oz bottle of formula (we are just starting whole milk slowly) for breakfast and one before bed. I think they enjoy feeding themselves so much that they fill up so they don't want as much of their bottles. Liam, my son, rarely finishes his bottles anymore, he is more interested in playing! Happy 1st Birthday to you and your baby!

I breastfed my son until 10 months, which is when he "decieded" to quit. He refused it out of a bottle and breast. He would not drink formula or anything. So well, he got cow milk and is almost six and perfect of course. Well he is still a picky eater, but he did eat half my shrimp scampi last night. Don't worry so much.

DON"T WORRY!

Your babies body knows what it needs, and if he is eating well then he is doing fine, your breastmilk was his nutrition and only a small portion of his fluid intake.
I used to worry the same with mine but what I have learned is they know what they need, sounds corney but it is true. One thing I do do is leave a cup of water always laying around the house that way if they are thirsty they can just get a drink,
Hope that helped a little.
