My Shitsu's skin shines rosy through his fur coat. Can this be allergies and what could I give him?

What can I do next?

Both my Boston Terriers have skin and food allergies. We all just suffered through it till I found a new food over the summer. I switched them to Canidae for sensitive dogs and it's made a world of difference. I order it through metropet (www.metropetservices.com) and they deliver to the DFW area free! It's not much more than grocery store dog food and well worth the price.

My dog has allergies in the spring and sneezes a lot. My mothers dog will get pink like you're saying. We both have medications we've gotten from the vet, so I'm not sure about OTC remedies. Hope this helps!

We have two dogs our Pomeranian is allergic to grass and our Blue Heeler is allergic to wheat, you can give them Benadryl for allergies, you may also want to think about changing his food, when we heard our Heeler was allergic to wheat the Vet said that a lot of dogs are so it was no surprise to him, we changed his food and he is like a new dog!! Anyway good luck!!

Andrea, I have found out the hard way what your dog needs. What he puts in his mouth is the major part of the problem. I have a lab who had major skin problems like this. My vet fianlly suggested that I put him on Pedigree, Give him 1 tbs of some kind of oil, canola, vegetable, or from something that you have fried. Give him 2 benedryl tablets a day ( I give these at night) I spent a lot of money on "so called" good dogfood Iams, Science Diet etc. Nothing helped. The pedigree was amazing. I could see results after just days. Now he is 10 and doing great. I am glad thatI got a grip on this when he was young. my vet also treats my 5lb. chihuahuah with benedryl when she has seasonal allergies like spring. It works out great she gets a couple of drops (childrens formula)Good Luck, buy that Pedigree!! Its great

My MIL has a a jack russel and she used to scratch and scratch and bite until her skin shown through her coat. She had an allergy test done and she's allergic to both foods and to grasses. She gets shots AND benedryl.

You will want to take him to the vet to have him checked out. It's very possible something is bothering him.

you can give him benadryl for allergies and try to bathe him regularly with an oatmeal based shampoo. If he is outside a lot you can also try sunscreen. I had a pekineese that was highly allergic to grass and trees and that seemed to help her tremedously. I would also suggest to keep him cute very short during the warm months.

My little shih-tzu had bad skin allergies. Walking outside in the grass would break her out and cause her skin to be very pink. The vet suggested I use an oatmeal shampoo and a mild conditioner. Also a bath at least once every 2 weeks, making sure you get all the shampoo and conditioner rinsed out well. This breed of dog is also sensitive to the heat more so than most so keep him from getting too warm during the summer. If you use a blow dryer after the bath, use a low setting. If it doesn't improve let the vet have a look at him just to be on the safe side. I had to put my little girl down in January because of a liver disorder. And I still miss her very much. Good luck.

My dachshund has severe allergies that manifest with red skin and blotches (sometimes). My vet says to give a half a Benadryl tablet twice a day to my precious "Lola". Hope that helps.

Depending on how old your dog is. We found out our puppy had demodex mites. That turns her pink. Goodluck. Because we are about to scream with this.

Our dog is allergic to corn. We have to give him rice formula dog food. He has very sensitive skin. We also have to use oatmeal shampoo. Any thing else breaks him out.
Hope this helps.

Hi andrea, I'm a vet tech of 11years. Unfortunately the breed has that against them. They are very allergic dogs. I would start with Omega fatty acids in the food, hypoallergenic shampoo baths. Sometimes there is flare ups if pet keeps scratching and they get secondary bacterial infection from it because their mouth and nails are not the cleanliness. Benadryl is 1mg/lb of body weight 2-3 times a day. Talk to your vet about benadryl or other anti histamines. (give only if your vet advises its okay) Sometimes as in children Benadryl can cause a hyper active state and it can also sedate. I would discuss this with your vet and try one at a time to see which is working. I would act fast as heat is on the way and "hot spots" are coming into season. they are the word for secondary bacterial infection from skin problems. look at your dogs food as well, sometime the answer is in there. if its beef try chicken, try hypoallergenic food. Food trial takes a minimum of 6 weeks to try to change the protein break down. Again, its against the breed to begin with and an ongoing frustration from the owner but they are great dogs!!! Good luck and let me know of any other questions.

Although I do not have a dog, my sister's shitsu was always having problems and his skin turned red or pink under his fur. You can give your dog benadryl. I have no clue what the dose is probably by weight like a baby. I would double check with a vet on the dosage.
