Do you think its made a difference in overall behavior or student safety? Which side are you on - another example of unneccessary big brother government or screw student/teacher privacy for law and order in the classroom/schools?

What can I do next?

I don't know because I never bothered to look. Here is the thing, we are a very litigious society, anything that can allow teachers to teach and students to learn without worrying about a he said she said lawsuit is fine with me.

Our high school and middle school have them for security purposes. They are located in areas at high risk for theft/vandalism, like outside the computer lab, theater/music room, sports field, main office, etc.
I don't see how deterring criminals has anything to do with big brother government?
As far as in the classroom? It wouldn't be worth the expense to install around here as pretty much anyone with a cell phone can record anything at any time and either post it online or show it to parents/authorities. This kind of technology has been a GOOD thing for catching bullies and other low lifes in the act of hurting people, so I'm all for it.

They tend to have them at all entrances and exits, also the areas of the school that have security concerns.. ..

But I do not think they are to watch the teachers and students as much as to make sure the people that are at school are where they are supposed to be.. And people they do not want on campus are kept off of the campus.

Our schools have them by the doors, not in the classrooms. If someone tries to enter the building, then the office knows.

Our school doesn't but when I was in HS, we did. It worked well for being able to watch everything and was a slight detterant. I will say though that once students saw the cameras, they would work around them and find the places that weren't being watched.

My youngest is in 3rd grade, and there are no cameras in his school. My oldest is in 9th grade, and goes to an affluent school in a very good area. There are no cameras in his school, but there is talk of installing them.

I teach at a high school in a very large, inner-city school where over 50% of the students are on free/reduced lunch. I love the school, and my students, but we do have some problems with gang violence, fighting in the halls, drugs, weapons brought on campus, etc. We do have cameras all over the campus except IN the classrooms. We've had them for over 10 years.

Generally students like having cameras because they have helped many, many times to recover stolen property. Also, in my classroom students like and respect me, but in the hallways when students don't know me, I have had a few altercations with students. Once, a student raised his arm to punch me, and I looked to the camera. He changed his mind. I was glad the camera was there.

Usually I am on the side of less government/more privacy, but in this instance I am all for cameras.

My son just told me that his high school does have cameras - and I quote
"Don't know if they are on, and don't care"

Seems not to impact the kids so much.

Nope, no cameras on campus, but, I did just look at 33 photos of teachers who have been charged with some sort of student/teacher relationship or relations. I am on the fence on this one.

Yes, it does. We voted on the idea at a PTA meeting and it got voted on immediately. We did fundraisers and now have cameras inside hallways and outside the perimeter of the building including the schoolyard. There are no cameras in locker rooms, bathrooms, cafeteria, or classrooms. The cameras have already aided in the arrest of vandals to the school property/schoolyard/teacher's cars.

we no longer have any sort of consiquences for kids to get any sort of understanding of boundaries or right and wrong. its a free for all. i am so dissapointed in the system. i actually like this idea. not only does it manage to make kids realize that yeah somone is watching...although who cares because what is going to happen to them? but it also reminds ppl to be on there best behavior.

were a small town and i remember the "getto" school installing security buttons where the guards would come when a button was pushed! i am sure this is the same sort of thing.

its kinda like when the principle was sitting in on a class and everyone was on there best behavior. i do think it will wear off after awhile once ppl get use to it.

A small price to pay to deter bullying and false accusations
from student or personnel. Schools is one area I vote for
"big brother". But I'm interested in what others think about this.
