Well, I think the only thing you CAN do is to maintain a Poo Free environment. I mean, get rid of it as soon as it comes out.
Sorry, bleck.
:(
My dog won't stop eating poo. Not only does she eat her own poo but she goes in the litter box and eats the cat poo. While this helps me not have to scoop....just kidding....its absolutely DISGUSTING and I can't handle it anymore!!! I have tried to give her pineapple which is supposed to help according to Victoria stillwell or whoever she is on TV but it doesn't help!! Any ideas or thoughts to help me out?!?! Thanks!

There's not a lot you can do to keep the dog from eating Kitty Roca. They love it. You'll just need to put the litter box in a place where she can't access it.
BUT, as for HER poo, it's likely that whatever you're feeding her is not getting fully digested because she's eating too much. Try a higher quality food and feed her less of it. Don't just leave food out all the time as this is not healthy for dogs. Feed in the morning and evening according to the suggested amount for her weight. When her body fully digests her food, she won't want to eat it again.
Your vet may have a product called Forbid that you can sprinkle in their food (both the dog and the cat) and it will make the poop taste especially nasty. I have also heard of people using Adolph's Meat Tenderizer in the food to do the same thing but can't vouch for how well it works. I kind of surprised that any vet would suggest some kind of vitamin or nutritional deficiency - most of these dogs are on a perfectly adequate balanced diet and just really find the poo to be a yummy treat. Keeping all the stools cleaned up as best you can can help too. And you can get a cat litter box with a cover on it that may help keep the dog out but sometimes cats don't like them, especially if they just trap odor inside.
Sorry, but I've heard that some dogs just do it and there's not much you can do about it except to clean up all poop immediately and keep a poop-free yard and environment. Can you put the litter box somewhere where the cat can get to it, but the dog can't? I've also heard to put Tabasco on the poop and that deters them from eating it in the future, but people have told me it doesn't always work. Some breeds are apparently more prone to it than others. My mom's new Shih Tzu puppy does it. My dogs have eaten goose and moose (yes, moose!) poop, but not dog poop.
I honestly don't know of anyway to keep her from doing it. I agree it's gross but she's a dog and she does not think it is. My mom's dog does it all the time. The only thing I can say to do it get it up and out before she has a chance to do it.
Good luck and God Bless!
I'm thankful not to have any cats...that would just disgust me...
I have NEVER owned a dog that ate his own excrement - and I've had at least a dozen dogs....I would think that the dog is gorging himself and that the food is not being digested so he smells it and eats it.
If this were happening to me - I would ensure that I picked up the dog mess when it happened to avoid it.
I would also have the vet check my dog out for any problems - deficiencies, gastrointestinal and the like...
There are several remedies which can be bought online or at the pet store. Mostly they are pills you give to your dog daily and are based on her weight. They should make her own stools unpalatable so she'll stop eating her own feces. Example brands - Excel "DETER Coprophagia treatment" and "For-bid". Another option will be to sprinkle meat tenderizer on your dog's food. Again should make her feces unpalatable. Further options would be to sprinkle spicy hot sauce or red pepper flakes on the poop. Finally you can keep a hawk eye on your dog and teach her the command "Leave it." You should start by talking to your vet in case he or she has any more current options. Good luck.
We have a chihuahua that does the exact same. The vet told us it could be a 'vitamin deficiency', we have tried different dog foods to no avail. It is really disgusting.
Some dogs just love it. My little dog is allmost 8, and he has been eating his own poop since day 1. We have tried covering it with hotsauce, meat tenderizer & all sorts of other things. Nothing works. We have tried changing his diet and that didnt help either. We do pick up poop in the yard daily but he always seems to find one to eat. It is beyond gross and I cant figure out how to stop it either - we have taken him to several vets over the years and they prescribe things and those dont seem to change his desire for poo....
All dogs will eat cat poo. I know disgusting. You will have to move the liyterbox if you want that to stop. As far as her own poo there is a supplement that you can get from petsmart or the vet I can't remember what it's called but its a powder that you put on the food and it makes the poo unpalatable. Good luck dogs are just nasty.
Sprinkle cayenne on some poop.. it might break the habit? Just guessing.
Our dog did that too! It was so nasty. I was constantly picking up the yard and I swear he would find something I missed. I finally saw him eating some and grabbed him and turned on the hose and cleaned out his mouth and around his mouth. (I had to! It was all over his snout!) He hated that. He also stopped eating poop! Other than that, the other ladies had some good ideas.

Basically, the food is not digesting properly in the dog, as others have said well enough it needs not repeating. The cat's box will always be a treat so it needs to be higher up or have a lid on it where the dog can not gain access (depending on size of dog). You should also talk to the vet to be sure your dog and cat have clean bills of health.
Change the dog food. I understand that the dog is not getting enough nutrience out of the current dog food it is on and will eat poop trying to get more. Make the dog food switch and see if it helps. I recomend something like Bennifuls. Also look for something like for puppies if your dog looks a little underweight or something that says healthy weight if he seems chub or sluggish.
your probably using a generic dog food. my understanding is when they do this it is cause they are lacking a nutrient. go to pedigree or a higher brand dog food.
We use a baby gate to keep the dog out of the room that the litter box is in-the cat can jump over it.
When our dog got older, he would do that too. The vet suggested adding pumpkin to his food.
We kept the litter box in a container that was big enough for the cat to get in, but the dog wouldn't fit. It worked really well and the litter all stayed contained so it was easier to clean up.
My dog did this too! You can buy and over the counter thing at Petsmart called Nasty Habbit--or whatever brand they have. They eat a pill everyday and it makes the Poop taste bad so they won't eat it! Works for our dog--just have to remember the pills!!!
Hi,
It is not unheard of that dogs eat their poop, however that does not mean that it is the right thing for them to do.
A the owner of Doggy Has It grooming, I come across all kinds of unwanted behaviors in pets.
9 out of 10 your dog have a nutritional deficit that they try to cover with the poop.
If you are interested in talking further, please share what food you feed your dog? I am partnering with a Natural Pet Food store and can get you free samples of good pet food, if you are ever in the area ( Elgin).
Pedigree, Beneful, etc. those with the good commercials are not one of them.
For all those that feed kibble and are really unsure of what is in there, I suggest you go on www.dogfoodanalysis.com to look up reviews or get yourself the book " Food Pets Die For". That will help you make more educated decisions for your dog.
Best of luck!
