Absolutely! Contact the shelter that you have in mind.

See what age ranges they are currently helping. This will help you know which toys are in your target area. Then HAPPY SHOPPING!!
Also, remember, that sometimes simple things such as a soft blanket, new pillow case or a knit hat are special too.

If you child wants to give gifts, is it necessary to solicit others to join in? I think it might be more personal if your child gave a gift that he/she chose or bought himself.

I am speaking from experience, as I have a 15+ year tradition of throwing a holiday party with food and gifts for women at our local homeless shelter. The work of soliciting gifts adds an extra layer to the whole operation. Sometimes it can become as much about the donators as about who you want to help. We stopped soliciting many years ago.

I think I would write a letter to family and friends explaining your desire and your kids wishes to give to others this holiday season and ask if they would like to help. Give the details on the shelter/project you have chosen and when you plan to deliver the gifts. (call the shelter in advance and find out when they need them). If they want to participate, give them you contact information and wish them a merry Christmas. Then wait to see if they contact you. Most shelters don't want gifts wrapped (put in bags instead) because they need to be able to see the gifts (to get it to an right child (age/sex) and because some cruel people put inappropriate things in with gifts. This is a great project! Merry Christmas!

Yes, it is OK but you have to do it respectfully and at "arm's length". And be prepared if someone you ask says "no thanks" or just doesn't respond. Charitable acts are a personal choice and not everyone can give every time.
