I was just mulling this over myself the other day and wondering how much I would have to make to make it worth going back to work. It was a lot more than I expected. Probably the easiest way to figure it out is to write it out in numbers. In other words, write down all your bills and spending habits and average out what you spend a month. Look at what you might be able to cut back on to help save money. Then, separately, calculate how much more money you would have to spend to go back to work (gas, mileage on your car, eating out more for lunch, wardrobe, toll roads if applicable, and, if you choose not to use family because it would be a strain on them, the cost of day care). Then, using a ball park figure of what you might earn, figure out how much you would actually be bringing home extra a month after taxes and extra costs and decide if that amount is really worth the extra stress and effort on your part. Don't forget that now you'll have less time to clean, do laundry, make dinner, run errands and your husband will have to pitch in a lot more to avoid you becoming overwhelmed. Putting it all down on paper will help you both to see the big picture a little more clearly. You might ask him to sit down with you and you both do it together so that he is giving more input and feels like he's part of the decision. Hope this helps and good luck!

Call me old fashioned, but I love staying home with my Children! WE are fortunate enough that I do not have to work at this time, however, once both of my children are in school, I do plan on going back to work, but I will be home in time to be home with my children.
YOU CAN make the sacrifices it takes to continue to stay home.
Write a budget for your family and STICK to it!
Carpool, to save gas money.
Use coupons.
Don't eat out.
Make home made presents for birthdays, and such.
Trade baby sitting with other Moms to save even more money.

If you absolutely have to go back to work, try to work on your Husband's days off, that way at least one parent is home with the Children.

I was faced with the issue of returning to work 2 years ago after the birth of our daughter. I had looked for a good work at home opportunity prior to her birth, but was faced with a lot of disappointment after trying a few things that did not work. I totally understand! When I had my first child, the plan was that I would go back to work just 3 days a week and someone would come to our home and care for our baby - perfect, right? I cried everyday and so did the baby! After 4 months, I finally convinced my husband to let me quit. this can be a really difficult decision!! i used to be a teacher before i got pregnant - and i felt so strongly about staying home with my child that i would have sacrificed most anything to do it. plus - i didn't make much money so it would have probably cost us money if i did go back to work. as both a parent and an educator i think it is really important to be home with your child when they are young. i know this is not possible for all families - but i am speaking to the ideal which is what we should all strive for - and then make do with what we can. some friends of mine prefer to go back to work - but that wasn't the right fit for me.

When my daughter was first born, my husband and I talked about me staying home. And just like your husband, his work was slow and that made me nervous. Plus, my mom and her sisters had all been single moms at one point. So my experience has always been that mommies work.

But I weighed out the factors just as you did. I made the decision to go into business for myself and my last day of my JOB is 5/2nd! I can't wait.

Hi L.!!! I really respect you for wanting to be a full-time mom. Mommycare is the best thing for children. How about you give your hubby a huge hug and kiss, and tell him that you know he'll find a way to take care of you and your baby girl, because he is such a good provider. Tell him that your new job is being a Mommy, which is the most important job in the world. His job is to work outside the home. Don't argue, just tell him that is how it is. Plus, figure out a budget, and show him in writing what you need to live on. There is always a way for parents to work things out so that mom can stay home with the children. So many moms these days simply don't want to stay home and raise their children.

Good luck to you, and I'm sure that it will work out if you don't yell or get into an argument...just be nice and sweet, and state what is going to happen.

You'd be surprised how much you can make working in a restaraunt. I already worked as a bartender and server when I got pregnant, and have continued doing so since I had my son almost 3 years ago. I thought about getting a 'grown up job', after all I did go to college for something. I decided that after paying for daycare (approx. $200/wk), what I would be left with is what I make in 2 shifts at my job. Right now I am working the most I have since having him (3 days/wk).
