Double Stroller and Other Baby Stuff Advice

I am going to being having our second baby and our daughter will be 2 years old when her brother arrives and I was wondering if I should get a double stroller. Are they worth the extra money? I have a stroller and infant car seat combo already and I hate how bulky it is. It takes up the whole trunk and I hate carrying it up and down our stairs.

I am also wondering if there is any gear that would make life with a toddler and a newborn easier. I don't have a ton of stuff from the first baby, we pretty much went without on a lot of things. But I would like to know what items are worth buying when you have two kids and no time!

Another question I have is how many newborn and size one diapers should I have on hand? I used cloth with my first baby after all the sample diapers ran out. I will not be using cloth diapers with this baby. I have two packs of newborn diapers but I am not sure if that is too many or not enough. I really don't want to haul both kids to the store for the first few weeks.

What can I do next?

Congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your son! Our daughter was 17 mos when our son was born. We bought a double stoller - Graco. It's a nice stroller and the kids were comfy. HOWEVER it was 40 lbs w/o the kids in it and almost 80 with them. I hardly ever used it so it was a waste of money for us. It was much easer to put the baby in a sling/carrier and the toddler in a stoller or cart. I'd try that first and if you find you need to get a stoller, go for the lighter weight ones (not quite as sturdy, but easier to manage) - OR the sit and stand ones. Good luck.

I would recommend looking into getting a double stroller. I have 6 children and when #3 was 14 months old we had #4. At that time it meant that I had an 8 yr old, 3 yr old, 14 month old and a newborn. Until I recieved that as a gift, I couldn't go anywhere by myself---like the store or to run errands that required me getting out of the car, as my then 14 month old wasn't walking and I had the new baby. After I got that stroller, I was able to make it to the store and other places without assitance (as long as I remembered not to get more than what I could carry under the stroller). For me it was a life saver and I would recommend to anyone that has children close together to get one as it made my life easier. I would also look into a swing. We had many times where I would finish feeding the baby and put them into the swing so that I could focus my attention on the older sibling.
As for the diapers, I would say that you need to consider how big your last baby was and how fast she grew. My little ones have been able to stay in the newborn diapers for about 2-3 weeks before moving up to the next size. But something that you can also consider is that some stores will let you exchange unopened packages of diapers for another size. I had a ton of diapers given to me for our 6th child and some were the newborn size and pretty soon I was needing the next size and had one pack of unopened newborns that Walmart took and let me exchange for the next size. But remember that a new one will go through (or should go through) 8 to 10 diapers a day. Use that to gage how many you might need to make it through the first 2 or 3 weeks and then even get a couple of packages of the next size bigger so that you have some if needed. Good luck and congratulations on the next one.

I'm in the same situation as you... so i don't know how it will work out, but here's what we're going to do. Just keep the single stroller for the infant and use the ergo carrier for my older son who will be 20 months when the new baby comes. Save the money now and if after the baby coemes we realize that we can't live without the double stroller we'll get it then. Then I'll be able to go to the store with the oldest on my back and the little one in her carseat in the shopping cart and won't have to worry about how many groceries i need... until its time to go home and bring them inside, lol. As far as diapers go, if you have too many you should be able to return them if unopened. I'd stick with the 2 packs of the newborn... also check out diapers.com. it's free delivery over $49 and its quick. Plus no sales tax in most states and you should be able to find a code online for $10 off your 1st order. It will save you a trip out of the house if you can manage to find time to get on the computer :) GL!

For me a double stroller is a must. I have a sit 'n' stand , it works really well for my two year old and 8 month old. My two year old can either walk, sit or stand. To me it is one of the lighter strollers I have ever used. I use it whenever I go to a store that doesn't have a double kid shopping cart, to the mall, at the park, and just about anywhere we go.

What I love with having two kids is the highchair, exerciser, and baby swing. They give me a place to put the baby and he can play while I help the older one.

As for the baby diapers. Mine didn't stay in newborn but for two weeks then went to size ones. And that was about two packs. If you are worried just buy another pack and a pack of size ones and keep the receipt. That way if you need to exchange them you can.

I would defintely recomend it as A. says, however you should really decide for yourself and maybe try it out now... can your 22month walk around walmart for an hour without a stroller (or whatever you do that you would take both kids) also a great idea I just thoght of is alot of parents do not want to invest in a double stroller so they have a cart that holds a carseat (that the newborn sits in) and a tiny seat near your legs for the toddler that needs a break. google image toddler infant stroller and see what you like. ALSO a good investment is a baby sling if you dont already have it> i only have one baby and it is a life saver for when i nanny for other kids and cant always carry him>
good luck
