Dramamine for a 2 Yr. Old

My 2 yr. old son has recently been complaining about the bumps on the road making his tummy hurt and we are going to be taking a 4 hr. trip soon. Have any of you given Dramamine (motion sickness med.) to a 2 yr. old? The box and the pharmacist say it's ok to give him 1/2 a tablet, but I'm paranoid of 2 things...

1. Will he be so drowsy for potty breaks and a lunch break that it will be miserable trying to get him to do what he needs to do?
2. I once took a full dose of dramamine (I usually take a half dose) and later that night at bedtime (hours after my flight) I felt terribly nauseous. Someone told me a full dose of dramamine can do that to you. Since my son doesn't even weigh 30 lbs yet, I'm afraid the 1/2 tablet might have that effect on him.

What are your experiences with dramamine and young children?

What can I do next?

We've been giving my oldest (who is now 5) Dramamine for motion sickness since he was two. He now takes a full dose, and he's never had any issues on a half or full dose. It seems to do to him what it does to me -you fall asleep for several hours and then wake up. That's it. However, we gave it to my 3 year old, and it had NO effect on him whatsoever! I've never gotten nauseous or known anyone who has from Dramamine.

Keep in mind that he may be drowsy or sleepy whenever you stop, but that's far preferable than him being sick and/or throwing up all over your car. As a life-long sufferer of motion sickness (that's particularly awful when I'm in the backseat), I vote for the Dramamine. He's two -just put a pull up on him. We put pull-ups on our 3 year old for road trips. He still goes to the potty, but at least it's not a big mess issue if he's asleep or has an accident.

I have given my 4 year old who weighs 35lbs a half a tablet of the non-drowsy Dramamine earlier this year when she was getting sick on the bus.
She was fine and had no side affects at all from it. I know the pills are small but you could quarter it and see if that has any affect or they have bracelets for kids instead of using a pill. I havent used on of those but have been told that they work just as well.

My son also gets car sickness. The only bad thing I have noticed is that when awoken from his "dramamine stupor", he is ill as a hornet. He's whiney, fussy, and just difficult to get along with. Other than that, I haven't noticed any other problems.

You could give him a 1/4 tablet maybe? I've never had a hard time with getting my kids to do what they need to do when they've had Dramamine though.
Good luck-
Have a great trip! =o)

When we switched to a convertible carseat at 14 months, my son had a terrible time with carsickness. If he wasn't sleeping, he usually puked. My pediatrician recommended to give him children's Benedryl, which has the same active ingredient as the prescription drug for this purpose. I've never actually had to give it to him, because the problem resolved itself thank goodness. But I just wanted to give you an alternative to try. The dosing instructions are on the box. It will most likely cause drowsiness, but if he's nauseous in the car anyhow he probably won't want to eat while you are traveling. Just keep some snacks available for him and he can eat when you get there if needed. Good luck with your trip!

My daughter couldn't tolerate dramamine, it made her vomit worse than the carsickness. We put her in the middle of the backseat and she couldn't do ANY activities while we were driving except listen to her ipod. It was night-marish until she grew out of it around 8. Now, as long as she doesn't try and read in the car, she is much better unless we go in circles.
