For March is Reading Month, my sons elementary (he is in 1st grade) has dress up days. Yup, I have procrastinated and this Thursday he needs to dress like a chef/cook and I have absolutely no idea what to do. Nor do I have any chef aprons or hats just laying around the house. Does anyone have any easy ideas?

Thanks so much for your ideas. I know what my son and I will be doing after school and work tomorrow!

Maybe an old white dress shirt (like a man's size), with sleeves rolled up a bit, and a bright red or blue bandana tied around his neck. Maybe use construction paper to cut out and attach a few silly food stains. You could put his hair in a hair net and/or tie a bandana around it.

Have fun. :)

He could maybe wear a white button up shirt for the "chef apron", a pair of black pants, and for the hat.. roll up some construction paper and tape it to fit his head and write "Chef ******" on it.

White shirt, black pants, maybe a white kerchief around his neck (French-chef style). If he has some plastic toy food that it woudn't upset him to possibly lose at school, you could have him carry that with him (but not even a toy knife --schools freak even at those). Any apron would do, doesn't have to be a fancy white one. Make a quick one with just a piece of fabric and something to tie it around his waist. And you could make a quick "toque" (chef's high hat) with a piece of white posterboard-- look online for the general shape. Or skip the toque.

The white half apron is what most people wear in professional kitchens.

Pillowcase & string can mimic it. It ties around twice. Around your back, cross, and ties in the front.

All good ideas. If the apron or shirt has a pocket, stick a few wooden spoons or a plastic spatula in them. Pin a few recipe cards ("From the kitchen of...") to his sleeve or stick them in the pocket. If you don't have some, make them out of index cards or construction paper. He could also take the silly route and wear a salad spinner on his head, or a tupperware container labeled "The Leftover Chef". You can find plenty of props at the party store or play food/play utensils at the toy store or dollar store.

I have a cute set I bought from target for $14. Comes with apron, white chefs hat, and oven mitts. If you lived close I would let you borrow!
