Drinkable Breakfast for Toddler

My son is 19 months old. I've been noticing that at breakfast, sometimes he will eat and sometimes he won't. More often he will eat a few bites of Cheerios and then want his binky and be done. When I sit him down, I give him milk and either bowl of Cheerios w/milk or a cereal bar. I've tried other options but he's just not a morning eater. I was thinking that on the mornings he isn't up for eating, maybe I could give him a breakfast shake or something. Has to be something I can mix with milk so he's only getting one sippy cup. Any suggestions?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your advice! I think that maybe he just isn't a breakfast kid. He is a big for his age, so I know he's not starving. Gonna try the instant breakfast at some point, but I've been giving him a whole bottle of drinkable YoBaby yogurt and add some milk to fill up his cup (I usually just use it to flavor his milk). And then I offer a banana in an hour and a half or so. I'm still gonna keep trying to give him something when he wakes up (sometimes he wants to eat and others he doesn't). At least I know that there are other kids that are like this so I won't sweat it. Thanks!

Hi T., I still have this problem with my 3&4 yr old boys. Breakfast is hit or miss. I don't worry about it too much. I used to give them Nestle Instant Carnation breakfast (I think that's the name of it) mixed in with their milk. I had to start doing that because my youngest went on a milk strike and I had to get milk into him. My cousin suggested that I try it and it worked.
Hope that helps.

I drink the Carnation instant breakfast every day - with something to eat... (for my medical situation, I need lots of calories and protein in the am.)

Anyways - I buy the canisters of the mix, rather than the packets so that I can decide how much I want in my milk. Typically a serving is about 4 tablespoons, but if I just need a snack or if my son wants some, I can just put in 1 tablespoon, or 2, etc. He loves it! It tastes like chocolate milk.

If you're concerned about the sugar/calorie content, you can always buy the sugar free (or low sugar I forget) variation. They still taste pretty good and he would be getting a boost to a normal cup of milk.

Good luck!

Hey T. I give my 2 year old daughter the pediasure drinks. I started at the beginning of spring and she does well with it atually. I thinking it helped with a growth suppurt she had in the summer. She was alway a very pick eater in general. And has been on the smaller end of the growth charts.I also know alot of the doctors say a this age they eat enough for their stomach size, but the pediasures have help supplement the missing or little meals.

Dear T.,
Because you are an artist and work at home, I would like to send you a newsletter that I put out that I think may be of interest to you. It concerns the environment in the home. I am concerned about the harzards of the materials and how it can affect all aspects of your child's growth and development.
I may be way off, but I do not think so.

Also, if you did not brestfeed Gunnar, this may also have an affect. He might need the pro-biotics.

I would make homemade bread in a bread machine, very easy, and there was not one person in the home that would not grab for the bread when the aroma went through the home at 6:00 a.m.! (I used whole grrain flour) This always works.

Let me know if you are interested in the material.

My son is not the best breakfast eater either. You could try some fruit such as bananas cut up in bite size pieces. Another thing you could do is try some drinkable yogurt and mix it with milk in the sippy cup. I have tried activia strawberry flavor with my son and he likes it. he is too young to eat cheerios with milk by himself. may be try some dry cheerios when he is sitting in his high chair. Good luck.

My daughter LOVES smoothies, and now her 20 month old brother does too. I use some plain organic yogurt, one banana per child, and a bunch of frozen berries. Sometimes I throw spirulina in. They drink it from bowls or use spoons (he needs help of course with the spoon) It never misses when I'm not too lazy to make it!

If he is at an acceptable height and weight and his ped isn't concerned, I would not push the issue. I would try to offer him a more hearty snack later if he seems hungry. My middle son is 9 and weighs 52 lbs and is not the tallest person. He is well nourished for his height and maintains good body mass (muscle). He is just small on the % scale. But he has always been on the very low % for height and weight. Your boy might just be a smaller height and build. I am not a fan of adding extra calories to fatten up a child. It sounds like he is just not a big consumer of calories in the am. How does he eat during the remainder of the day? Does he balance it out or seem lethargic? If so, I would mention to your ped for further investagation. If not, I would just remind you that a child that young will not starve himself :)

Carnation instant breakfast, pediasure, yogurt drinks, milk/yogurt/fruit smoothies? Just a few ideas. My oldest son has never been a breakfast person. He won't even drink his breakfast, but he is otherwise fine.

My daughter used to be the same way when she was younger and even now doesn't eat a proper breakfast. I started giving her Carnation Instant breakfast No Sugar Added. Now she is picky so maybe your child might like the Ensure brand time supplements. Carnation has extra Vitamins and Minerals that they need. And you make it with milk so you are still getting that too. If you are worried about the chocolate there is vanilla too. I hope this helps. At least they are getting something semi good in their belly. It can be expensive so look for coupons. :)

Oh T.
My daugher is 3.5 and she is so picky that when she doesnt want to eat breakfast (which is almost everyday) I give her Nutripals (they are less than the prediasures)
They come in different flavors! I tried Carnation Instant Breakfast and she wasnt crazy about it. They get pickier as they get older it seems shen she was your sons age she ate all kids of things eggs, toast, cheese. Now I am lucky if she eats a slice of bacon!
Good Luck

Since you are a SAHM, you can do what I do. My daughter wakes up and has a sippy of milk, and then isn't ready to eat breakfast for 1.5-2 hrs later. she's old enough to ask now, but when she was 19 months i just could tell she was getting hungry. a lot of kids don't want to eat as soon as they wake up.

as another option though, Gerber Graduates makes drinks in juice boxes in the baby/toddler aisle, called "Smart Sips." so there is a good drinkable option. my DD gets one of those, or a Pediasure, on days she doesn't eat well.

Hi T.,

I agree with the other moms that you shouldn't worry too much about your son. If he is growing appropriately, then don't make yourself crazy over this. I understand though wanting to get him in a routine for when he goes to school of eating breakfast in the morning. My youngest is 4 and she is not much of a breakfast person either, never has been. She will eat a few bites of cereal or a piece of toast and that's all she wants. She eats a snack about 10, so she is getting the nutrition she needs, and she is a healthy, growing pre-schooler. I do continue to offer her breakfast every day, but I don't go nuts if she only eats half a waffle.
If you want to try something drinkable, my 6-yo son loves yogurt smoothies. His favorite is strawberry banana but you can mix in whatever fruit you like. Ours is 1 cup frozen strawberries, 1 banana, 8 oz. vanilla yogurt, 1 cup milk, 1 tsp. honey. Mix in blender. That comes out pretty thick though. You may have to make yours fairly thin if you want your son to drink it from a sippy cup.
Best of luck!
