Dry Cracked Feet. Uggh. What Do You Do?

I have only had this issue for the last several years. I thought it was due to my last pregnancy, but lo and behold it's happening again this year.

I must admit that I don't do much "preventative" because I thought it wouldn't happen again. So for those of you who have this problem, what are your tricks/MUST DOs to keep your feet and toes happy and healthy all summer long?

Note: My feet will unexpectedly "crack" and be sore. Then I'm dealing with a "cut" that I'm trying to keep clean and kind of hobbling around. I'm dealing with this part ok, it's how to prevent it that I need your advice on.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your helpful replies. I have begun soaking, filing and treating my feet again. I really thought this would have gone away by now. I guess this is just going to have to be part of my daily/weekly routine of taking care of myself and my skin.

Thank you all for your ideas and suggestions.

I HAD cracked heels but not to where they were bleeding, just the ugly dried cracked heels. I don't have them anymore and this is what I have done. I have the Ped Egg and use it right after I get out of the shower. Then at night while I'm watching TV or right before I go to bed I use a really rough normal nail file (the ones for acrylic nails) on my feet when they are dry. Then I put Vitamin E Body Gel with Tea Tree Oil (Walgreens for like $6) on my feet and go to bed. I decided to be faithful about this and now my heels are almost back to normal and it only took about 2 weeks. That was about 6 weeks ago. Now I use the Ped Egg about once a week and the file maybe 2-3 times a week and the Body Gel when I think about it and they still look great. And here in AZ we LIVE in sandals or barefoot because its so hot! I really think almost anything will work if you are just consistant with doing it. Good luck!

Get some Lubriderm Intense Skin Repair Ointment. It is in a tube with a gold lid. I put it on at night with a pair of thin socks. I use an emory board for feet in the shower. Then I like Miracle Foot Cream (by Dr. Scholls stuff at Walmart) after my shower with a pair of socks until I am ready to put on sandals. For cracks, I have a bottle of superglue specifically for skin cracks in my medicine cabinet. Works for paper cuts, too. Watch for drips! I use a q-tip to wipe the excess.

There are times when dry, cracked feet are a sign of a health issue.

Having a pedicure at LEAST once a month helps...you can do it yourself or go out and get it done - but taking care of your feet is imperative.

If you are dealing with a cut that won't heal - get checked for diabetes. if you have diabetes - then it's EVEN MORE important to care for your feet. There are some that believe pedicures are a luxury - they are NOT - they SHOULD be part of your normal routine in life - these are the items that YOU WALK ON....You use them EVERY DAY...

doesn't matter that it's summer - you need to care for your feet regularly.

Soak your feet in warm water with Epsom salts and a small bit of vinegar for an hour or more then rasp the softened dry skin off - repeat every few weeks.
I recently found something called Milky Foot.
It's a chemical peel for your feet.
You wear these booties for an hour, wash your feet off, wait a week or so and then over a period of 2 - 3 weeks your feet shed skin - lots of skin - between toes, all over the bottom and heels.
(It didn't affect my toe nails at all.)
It helps if you soak your feet every so often.
It's painless, and the amount of skin shed is almost alarming (you kind of know what a snake feels like) but when it's over your feet feel very soft all over.
Not everyone likes it, and you can't use it if you are diabetic, but I really love how my feet feel after I use it.

Get yourself a foot file of some sort...keep the dry, dead skin as minimal as possible...then get some good old fashioned vaseline...put a nice thick coat on at night...a pair of white cotton socks if you do this a couple of times a week ( more often until your heels become soft and pliable like you want them) you should not have nearly as much trouble.

I keep a pumice stone in the shower and use it about every other day, it will be the last thing I do in the shower (sitting down) after the skin has been good and soaked with water, it makes it easy to rub off the dead skin. Also you can use foot creams at night, covered with socks. I like to do this in the winter, since it's easier to sleep with socks on then, although, it's Ok to take the socks off after a few hours when the cream has been absorbed, I usually end up kicking the socks off in the middle of the night ;) Btw, for me, I have chalked it up to aging :( Lol....

Believe it or not, the same spray they use for Jock Itch, is also used for Athlete's Feet.. which in part is due to a bacteria.. Get some of the spray at Target and use it.. Gotta tell you, all the lotions and creams are fine, but that is mostly AFTER you get rid of the dry cracked skin........ so check out that spray, use it as directed and you'll see a difference.. I was amazed at how well it works ... then for preventive measures.. if you know you are gonna be outside and wearing sandals.. that night, wash your feet and then apply spray.. .again, once you also get rid of the dry cracked skin.. then lotions are great for preventive measures..

additionally, whenever I cut my foot.. I ALWAYS use Bactine, that stuff works like a dream........ try that out.. also, if you use the spray.. don't spray into the cut, it will sting like crazy.........

best of luck

You can get a pedi... or DYI and slide your feet around in the sand at the beach :)

My girlfriends LOVE and swear by Heeltastic (as seen on TV, but you can buy it at CVS or any pharmacy)... I bought some; it kind of smells like citronella, but it works!! Make sure you're staying hydrated too :)

Use the PedEgg..you can get it at walmart or target. It is amazing! I had the same issue you have and now it is gone. To me, I give myself a better pedicure that what I normally get at the salon all by myself. IAnd, it's cheaper that constantly going for pedicures. t's amazing! Also, get Palmers cocoa butter for dry heals to put on afterward. SUCCESS!!!! You will have super super baby soft feet!

Good luck!

Regular pedicures help a whole lot. You just have to exfoliate that old skin off to keep it from cracking. If you don't want to apply something daily I suggest regular visits getting a pedicure and having them do it for you.

Had it my whole life... I get a professional detailed Pedicure monthly. I do not go outside w/out shoes or socks at least. Once a week I take vaseline and soak my feet in it, wrap them in plastic or a plastic baggie, put socks on over and go to bed. In the summer I can not sleep with hot feet so I do this a few hours before bed time. Then, I use a good foot scrub and a file with the vaseline still on and get my feet feeling pretty again. Make sure you are keeping them moisturized frequently. I also use Heeltastic daily. Make sure you do not put a freshly mositurized foot in a shoe your foot will be slick and prone to sweating and you may fall so make sure after you moisturize your feet you are not wearing shoes for a good 20-30 min. Do not forget the cuticle oil for your toes while you are at it.
ps my mom used to use super glue to fill in on those big cuts to keep it from infection.

I have dry skin everywhere and my feet used to be a huge problem. I'd really recommend getting a pedicure so that you have a good starting point for maintenance. Then have a paddle type pumice file at home to swipe at the bad spots now and then and any creamy lotion that you can apply every night. If you forget, or think you can't handle doing lotion nightly, use vaseline and socks once or twice a week instead. It does work to just keep them up and it's much more comfortable.

When I start to have problems I use a lot of hand cream and change my socks a few times during the day. It'll get better and then I'll slack off and it gets worse again.

Any of Arbonne's Body Lotions and or the Foot Cream will clear them right up I had the same issue's so did my sisters and kids but not anymore our Foot Cream is awesome not only for the feet but for mosquito/bug bites(stops the itch) and for the hands. There isn't any mineral oil in Arbonne's products this allows them to go deep into the skin instead of just sitting on the skin and leaching moisture. I have PM'd you my web info so you can check them out. I can email some before and after pics too if you would like.
