With the weather and all my hair has become so dry. I use heating devices on it to curl the ends so the ends are getting damaged also. I have thin and fine hair. Would like advice on what I could use to give it moisture and a healther look. One option I've been told of is using coconut oil and letting it sit for 30 minutes and rinse out. Then inquiring on what kind of non damaging shampoo could I purchase as if the coconut oil gives it moisture I don't want the shampoo to just strip it again. Advise is very much appreciated!

What can I do next?

I have been using Matrix Sleek shampoo and conditioner. I also use a Sleek smoothing oil. My hair is very coarse and thick and also tends to be dry. I really love what these products have done for my hair. They were recommended by my hairdresser and I've tried a lot of different products in the past and these are my favorite. They do cost more, but I only shampoo and condition about 3X's per week, so I don't go through them really fast.

I would wash my hair less often and/or let it air dry more often. I would also use a conditioner on it, especially at the ends. My mom likes Infusium leave-in and I like Dove's intense moisturizer. You may need to cut back on either the heat or the days you use a curling iron or similar. My hair was split and brittle in HS when I used a curling iron daily. Since I stopped, I no longer have split ends, though I did have to get a pretty substantial cut to get rid of them all.

If your ends are damaged, you need to trim them. They will start breaking up your shaft and damaging all your hair. Also, be careful of over-washing. Your hair needs to produce oils, for it to be healthy. I have long, thick, wavy hair. I only wash my hair 1-2 times a week, and it's extremely healthy. Do you use a lot of product? A build up of products can really take a toll on your hair. My hair gets pretty dry in the winters. (Dry heater air, hot showers, hard water, etc.) I use Organix products on my hair. They are quite affordable. Here is the link of the products I specifically use. http://www.organixhair.com/category-title/27 The intensive treatment, is especially wonderful. To start you might use the treatment every time you wash for a week, and then only use it every so often after.

Argon oil, after wash and blow dry, before curling or flat irons.

You have to protect your hair before curling or flat irons - create a barrier between the hair and the direct heat.

Works wonders for my hair and I tend to dry out in the winter, along with flat ironing day.

My grandmother also swore by olive oil - we used to just warm up a bit (now we can use the microwave), comb it through our hair, let sit for 15-30 minutes, wash out.

How often do you shampoo? My hairdresser advised my to shampoo my dry hair only once or twice a week. I wash it with plain water the rest of the time.

I use the Costco brand (Kirkland) shampoo and Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Mask twice a week (Amazon or some beauty supply stores). The macadamia mask is a miracle worker. It only takes 7 minutes and works better than anything else I have found. It comes in a brown and green tube or tub. It has really improved my hair and has made it much shinier smoother.

Yes, don't shampoo but once or twice a week at most. My problem with a moisturizing shampoo is that it drags my hair down. Try not to use hairspray.

Aussie Three minute miracle works great!
I would also seek to find a different way to get curl so you don't have to heat...its the worst thing for hair. I use large velcro curlers in my hair immed after blowdry for about 5-10 minutes and get a really soft curl. If you would twist hair first and then wrap you would get more of a spiral. Also try to go longer between shampoos to avoid heat.

I would give the heating devices a rest. It's a double-edged sword. The devices cause frayed ends, and then you curl them to smooth them out. Been there, fried that.

Start with a trim and maybe a conditioner in the salon--if that's in your budget.

If not, then use a conditioner overnight several times a week. I use an all organic line called Giovanni, available at Ulta or Target.

And definitely give your hair a few week's heating device break. She'll thank you!

i was always told to use mayo on hair.. put it in your hair and let it sit for about 10-20 minutes and then rinse out.. and if you want hair growth to i was also told to cut an onion in half and rub it on your scalp or wash your hair with 2 teaspoons of sugar to make hair thicker.. good luck....

An old school technique is using mayonnaise. Slather it on your hair, cover with a plastic bag and leave it on as long as you can stand it. About an hour or two.

Then wash as normal.

Purifying shampoos can be a little harsh, but come in handy if you've made a boo-boo in coloring your hair at home.

There are lots of nourishing and conditioning products you can buy over the counter that aren't that expensive. But, I grew up with the women in my family doing the mayo treatments. The oils are pretty restorative.

Best wishes.

Using heat on you hair will damage it.
When I threw away my hair curler and stopped using a blow dryer (except on the cold setting) my hair got a lot healthier.
You have to have the damage trimmed off.
There's no fixing it.
Oils and moisturizing conditioners might help slow the damage down but you really have to stop or cut back on doing what's causing the damage in the first place.
I've stopped using conditioner.
After shampooing and rinsing it out I pour a vinegar water on my hair and don't rinse it out.
Once it dries there is no smell and my hair is very shiny and doesn't tangle.

I also have dry, fragile, thin hair. I searched for years for a solution. I finally found AG hair cosmetics smooth sulfate-free argan oil shampoo at Ulta, and my hair improved really quickly. I recently started using the matching conditioner, and I think that helps, too. But no more Dove or other sulfate shampoos! Those strip your hair.

I also use Moroccan Oil before I comb out my hair after I wash it, and before I use my flatiron. And I no longer wash it daily, but every 2-3 days. Good luck!
