Dry Scalp Not Dandruff

I was wanting to know if anyone has any suggest any other product other than "Head & Shoulders" then I moved on to "Nuetrogenas T-Gel" it has tar coal in it. I started getting these dry flakes after my son was born 12 years ago. And over the years it will not go away. I thought it was maybe due to my Lupus or diabetes or even Eczema, but now my son has it. We have really thick hair, so we tried having our hair thinned, but didn't do any good. I have tried lotions and conditioners no good, it just leaves my hair to oily. It is very embarrassing to me and I'm sure it is to my son also. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.......

A., I use this product that I order from a wellness company. That hands down, gets rid of my kids eczema. I have 4 children, 2 of which have a sensitivity to dairy products and when eaten they both get horrible eczema down the back of there legs. 1 night of appling this lotion to their legs and they look so much better. I have eczema on my scalp. My dermatologist prescribed Luxiq, a cortisone foam for the scalp. It works wonders for me. My scalp used to be flaky, scaly and extremely painful. Now, it is back to normal, and I only use the Luxiq when I have flare-ups. It is expensive, but it is definitely worth it.

I have Lupus that causes my scalp to flake. I found a physician (who I've been with for 9 years now) who helped me. I use Hydrocortisone cream. My problems are primarily around the hairline. I apply a small amount every evening before going to bed (I shower in the mornings). Occasionally it gets bad so I have to apply twice a day, but not often.

Also, weird as this sounds, don't shampoo your hair every day. It can dry your scalp out. I shower every day, but every other day, instead of shampooing and conditioning, I just condition. If you are someone who sweats alot or uses a lot of hair product and have to shampoo everyday, you might want to switch to a daily use or baby shampoo that is more gentle. Alternate between that and your regular shampoo.

And one more thing, when you find a product that your skin reacts kindly to (my Lupus causes my skin to freak out over almost anything), stick with it. Switching products can cause your skin to react. When you try something new, try only one thing at a time.

I've dealt with this since I was kid and I'm 33 now. It's never gone away, but it is under control.

Yes, try the tea tree shampoo. You can get a generic version at the beauty supply stores, so it is an inexpensive and gentler option to try. Although short of miraculous, it has helped me. Just be sure you are THOROUGHLY rinsing out both shampoo and any conditioner you use.

I did hair for 4 years before staying home with my daughter. If T-Gel isn't working for you, it's something you need to see a dermatologist about. T-Gel is a really great OTC non-professional brand. Redken also makes a shampoo for dry scalp. I can't remember the name but I know it's in a black bottle. You can find it at any Beauty Brands or maybe those Beauty Express places. But, like I said, I do think it's something you should see a dermatologist about. They have to many wonderful prescriptions that can take care of that right away! Good luck!

Ok, this is what I use and it's worked great for me. I just discovered it a couple months ago. I tried all the regular shampoos, but because mine isn't true dandruff, it didn't do anything for me......and the smells were nasty and sometimes burned my nose & eyes. Sorry, but it's a H&S shampoo, but it's new on the market.

Head & Shoulders Hydrazink---restoring shine formula
You can find it at Walmart, it has a big green swoop across the front of the bottle, instead of blue.

Good luck,
S.

Have you tried S-Gel instead? It has a salicylic acid in it rather than the Tar Coal. Head and Shoulders also has a stronger version out now too.

Another thought is that this could be brought on by a food allergy. My Mother, Nieces, Son and Myself all get eczema like symptoms from peanut butter.

You may also want to consult your physician there are most likely stronger or different treatments available through the pharmacy.

I'm a cosmetologist and the shampoo that I would try if I was you is the Redken Scalp Relief there are three steps and the shampoo stays on 5 minutes, the conditioner stays on 3 minutes and there is a leavin treatment it does take alot of time but it has helped many clients. Also i work in an assisted living facility and the ladies only get their hair washed once a week and the Scalp Relief is reccommended to use it at least twice a week but it has done wonders for all of them!!! I found that it has done better than anything else that we've tried and believe my I have treied everything.

It may be eczema or psoriasis. Have you seen your physician about it? He should be able to prescribe gentle yet effective shampoo and/or creams for it. Usually a product with cortisone in it. He can also prescribe something for your child. Over the counter/herbal remedies usually do not have enough active ingredients and too much inactive ingredients that can cause more dryness or excessive oiliness. sometimes herbal remedies can cause allergic reactions. Eczema and psoriasis are pretty common, but can easily be controlled with proper care. See your doctor first!

Hi A.! My neice had the same problems. They couldn't seem to find a solution that worked without making her hair oily. My mother-in-law is a beautician, so I asked her if she had any recommendations. She said that they hear this at their beauty shop all of the time and the only solution is Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree shampoo. My neice has been using since Thanksgiving time, and it works amazing! Her hair looks so healthy and beautiful! You can only purchase this through a professional - either a beauty shop or a store like Beauty Brands. Good Luck!

I too suffer from a dry scalp and have for years. I am now under the care of a dermatologist who diagnosed my scalp condition as being psoriasis (sp). I have been using Kenalog spray which is a form of steroids on the areas and it is much improved. It might be something to check intol. Also it is important to use the spray on a regular basis which I used to be not be very good at doing. Good luck. I know how annoying it can be.

A little about me. I am 42 years old and the mother of 4 children ages 22 years to 3 years. I do in-home childcare and totally love this website. I too love my life.

Hi A.,
My husband has the same problem...He has found a shampoo called Ketoconazole. You can get it over the counter as 1% but that doesn't work as well for my husband, so his docter prescribed him with the same shampoo at 2% strength. I don't if you can use it on a child, you would have ask your docter. But that works great for him. Good luck

My sis in law has the same problem. Head and shoulders makes your scalp dependent on it. Try paul mitchells tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner. It made a huge difference in her hair, and doesn't leave you oily!

i suffer from dry scalp in the winter and use t-gel, but some times Scalpicin (head and shoulders has a similar formula as well)is what works the best. it's a small bottle that you just put in your hair and rub into your scalp. you don't wash it out or anything. i love it, because occassionally i get the "itchies" from the lack of humidity during the winter. i don't have as big of a problem now that i'm back in Kansas (lived in Utah for 9 years. the desert isn't kind to the scalp), thankfully.

good luck!
