My 4 month old recently began eating cereal and of course a lot ends up on his face during the feeding. I do notice that his skin has gotten red and dry on his cheeks since starting the cereal. Does anyone have a remedy for this? Should I put baby lotion on his cheeks?

It sounds like the cereal is causing dryness (eczema) because of an internal sensitivity he's having to it. Allergies are different than sensitivities. You may want to switch to a rice cereal (it's a very mild grain) and stay away from the wheat or barley or oat products for a bit.

What type of grain is the cereal? If it is a wheat-based or a grain which contains gluten, it could be an allergy or sensitivity (those are common - which my son suffers from). If it is one of the above, try switching to rice cereal for a while and see if there is still the same reaction.
Aveeno has GREAT baby lotion. My little boy had some dry patches on his face and we put the lotion..and it went away really fast. Hope this helps! - S.
Aquaphor is my answer too, but you can get a different brand white petroleum. Balmex has one that I like too. It's great to put on their faces before going out in the winter as well as on chins when they're drooling (teething). It doesn't stain and is clear... you only need a tiny bit.
It could be eczema. I would take him in to the doctor, just to rule it out. When a reaction occurs soon after introducing a food, you have to make sure it isn't an allergy!
Your doc will give you good advice on a lotion as well, if that's all you need.

My son suffered from really dry skin (takes after me), so I used JOHNSON'S SOOTHING NATURAL Soothe & Protect Balm. I really helped. I started out using Aquaphor for his face and it left his skin too oily.

Give your pediatrician a quick call to rule out allergies.
If all is ok, then some aquaphor will help.
It sounds like it could be eczema, consult your doctor, but you shouldn't put any lotions on it. If it is infact Eczema, less baths and aquophor helps it. Bathing dries out a babies skin and makes eczema worse.
Also another note, it may not be the cereal, it may just be from the cooler weather we have been having. I know with my kids that was always a key in when the eczema acted up!

it's great. put a tiny amount to coat the area.
i use it everywhere for my son.
My daughter had the same problem. We used Johnson's soothing naturals. There is a stick (it looks like a little deoderant) it is just for babys face and cheeks. It also helped with knees when crawling. You can find it at Walmart or Target with the other baby items. It is in a little green box. It generally worked pretty quick, and is especially helpful when drooling begins with teething.
Try Aquaphor (sp?) ointment. Docs recommend it to treat diaper rash and facial flair ups in babies. It's really gentle and healing. The fragrances and other ingredients in baby lotion will probably be too harsh for your wee one's face.

One thing you can try that has ALWAYS been my lifesaver for dry skin for my girls is Aquaphor from Eucerin. You can find it in any drug store or Walmart or Target. But you can use it for dry skin, chapped lips even for diaper rashes. We call it the miracle ointment. Good luck!
\well make sure its not dried up cereal, lol. that stuff really sticks on. it could also be a sensitivity/allergy to the cereal or eczema which you want to talk to the doctor about. it could also be sensitivity to the product you use to wipe his face or just the act of wiping it thoroughly.
he is a little young to start solids so i would def take him to the doctor to look for any reactions. aquaphor is nice though
Hi J., I guess the cereal could dry out baby's face. I'm not sure about baby lotion because it has a scent. I don't know the name but there is a product that looks like vaseline. Best bet ask your doctor. Dry skin can also be from sun and wind. It is good for baby to be outside but you should protect the face. I was always reluctant to put lotion on or near my child's face. I would try something that is nontoxic, in case he rubs his face, then sticks his fingers in his mouth. Just be careful and trust your instinct.

Try Aquaphor - doesn't sound like an allergic reaction but you might want to check with your pediatrician.
