My 3rd grader was recently diagnosed with dyslexia. I would love to connect with other families who have school age kids with dyslexia. I live in the Phoenix, AZ area but would love to connect with anyone anywhere. Are there any support groups?

I know this isn't a life threatening diagnosis but it is life changing. We all want the best for our children and want them to grow to be the best that they can be.

Thanks mamas!

Edit: Through the process of having my son tested we determined that I have dyslexia as well. It's nice to know why I could never learned my upper times tables very well, am a terrible speller and have a hard time putting my thoughts into words. I can related to my son and the struggles he's having and will have. He's receiving reading intervention at school right now and this weekend I'm going to begin tutoring him at home 4 days a week. We're also trying to get some classroom accomodations for him at school. Thank you for all the responses sometimes it's just nice to hear from others.

What can I do next?

Your at the same point we were when my DD was diagnosed. We're all the way across the country, but you've begun a new journey into the land of IEPs and struggles. But, my DD is now in 6th grade, straight A student who calmly tells people who make fun of her spelling especially,"Oh, no I'm dyslexic I can't spell at all!" She laughs at herself and helps other people learn about dyslexia. She knows what type of help she needs and how to ask for it. She knows it doesn't mean she is stupid and knows how to make sure teachers know that too. There are still rough patches - go look up my posts on here - I even got jumped on here a few times. It's a journey and it may not be what you expected but it is worth it to go with them on it.

Feel free to message me if you like.

Proud:

I'm in VA - just outside of Washington D.C.

It's not easy. If you or your spouse aren't dyslexic - it is hard to understand how they learn. We paid for a learning evaluation for Greg. And he has a tutor who specializes in dyslexia....

You will find writing hard too. Practice, Practice, Practice...and patience too.

Whlie my kids aren't dyslexic, my friend has two girls that are (middle school and high school). The special reading program at school that they were in did nothing to help them for years. The middle schooler was at a 3rd grade reading level and kept being pushed up to the next grade with out any progress in reading. Although she was "pulled out" of reading class for special help, she couldn't read the story problems for math class, her science book, etc. My friend took her child to the Linda Mood Bell Program (in Scottsdale I believe). In 1 year, they have gotten her up to a 5th or 6th grade reading level. This is remarkable since the school district was not able to make progress with her in 4-5 years and kept stringing her on. While it is a pricy program, it was totally worth it for my friend. Can you put a price on your child's future? If your child cannot read, they can't learn in any of the other subjects, read the driver's ed book, instructions for a game, e-mails, etc. It will effect their self confidence as well. Make sure you get your son involved in some activity that will build his self-confidence and please check into the Linda Mood Bell Program. While the schools can help accomodate your son, don't wait for them on this one. You don't want him to be in 7th grade and still at a 2nd grade reading level.
