Ear Infections - Foley,MN

I am looking for advice on an ear checker. My child has had many ear infections and I am looking into a device that can be used at home to check his ears so I will know for sure he has one before I take him in as in some cases when I take him to the clinic the results come back he doesn’t have an infection. Children do show signs of pulling at ears, rubbing at back of their head, running a temp, and crankiness when they have an infection which are all signs but I have heard about a device you put in the child’s ear and it will rate if fluid unlikely and consult doctor. Any advice from mothers who have used a related item would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I just bought one from Walmart for about $30 about a month ago (if you buy online it is in the $50-60 range). It is called earcheck and does just what you said. It comes back with a reading that says if there is fluid. It gives a rating from 1-5. If you get a 1 or 2 it is ok. If you get 3-5 it says go see a docter. My son has gone through numerous ear infections and so we used it about every day to check his status. Sure enough, the day it went to 3 I took him into the doc and he had an infection.

The only problem we have seen with it is if ear wax gets on the ear drum then we get an x and it says it can't get an accurate reading. We had been getting the x for a couple of weeks and then went in to my son's 3 yr checkup and the doc said she could see some wax covering the ear drum and she said that was probably why the device wasn't working.

By the way if your child is getting tons of ear infections you may want to try having your child go to a chiropractor and/or switch to rice milk if old enough. Like I said my son has had chronic ear infections and has gone through 2 sets of tubes. We were heading down the path for a 3rd set and I really didn't want him to go through that again so I took him to a chiropractor that specializes in children. This helped considerably but did not eliminate the infections. However, once we switched to rice milk instead of cow's milk my son's congestion disappeared and haven't had 1 infection since.

If you want to find out more about the chiropractor just email me. Goodluck.

One of my friends has the device you described, but she said it is incredibly sensitive and can be easily thrown off, giving you a false reading.
My toddler rarely shows any signs of an ear infection. There were several times I thought for sure we had it figured out because he had so many of the symptoms, took him to the dr., and was told his ears were fine.
I bought an LED otoscope from www.drmomotoscope.com for about $30 and it has been worth every penny. Once I figured out what to look for, it was a breeze to check my boys' ears when in question and has saved us a lot of time and $$$ by helping us avoid unnecessary dr. visits and co-pays.

We have an Ear Check, Middle Ear Monitor. My son too, always had ear infections for his first year and a half, but he never had any symptoms. It seems that as soon as I got the ear check his ear infections went away, so It has never had a positive result on it, but I have taken my son to the doctor a few times just to make sure and he was always fine. It doesn't tell you for sure, but at least it gives you an idea their may be problem.

Hello,
I get a magazine called One Step Ahead and they have a ton of baby/kid products. Their website is www.onestepahead.com and I noticed they have one called EarCheck for $69.95. I thought about ordering one, but have not yet. Just thought you might like to check it out as well.
Good Luck!

I don't know about the ear checker you described but thought I'd ask if you've tried chiropractic for your child's ear infections? Chiropractic adjustments of the upper cervicals (neck) and ears can do wonders for kids who have constant ear infections! Let me know if you have any questions.

I have not tried the device that measures the fluid.
I have and use an otoscope frequently. Dr. Mom's otoscops is about $25 with shipping and is actually nearly doctor quality. It is very sturdy, made of metal, rather than the plastic ones you can find. The light is guaranteed to not die. It is just amazing!
For the price of a typical co-pay, you have a way to check the ears and know if they should be seen or not.
