My little girl had hers pierced when she was a baby then when she got to the point of trying to take them out we took them out so she wouldn't swallow an earring. They were out for months and when I thought she would leave them alone, we put a pair back on her. The hole was still there. No problem getting them on. Now she takes them out and puts them on whever she wants.

From what I was told when my daughters were done is that after that long you have about 3 days before the hole starts to close. Some will close faster and some may not close at all. It really depends on how well your daughter heals.

I agree on cleaning both earrings and getting at least a different back for the one that was infected.

I would clean her ear again, and then replace the earrings with either a pair with sterling silver posts or gold posts. Some ears are really sensitive to the metal used. Mine were!

Also, on hole closures, When I had mine pierced for the second hole, after about a year, I left them open for one day and they closed up. With my original piercing, They seem to want to try to close if I don't wear earrings for about a week. Sometimes they don't, but sometimes they do, it is really wierd!

Anyway, your best bet is the sterling silver or gold posts.

Hope her ears feel better soon!

Dear J.,
Try a new pair of earrings. Maybe she is allergic to that pair of earrings. Or you can let them heal by keeping the pair in until the scab goes away. I put alchohol on my ears and earrings to keep them clean and that also seems to work.

Hi J.. How's she doing? I had a similar problem with my 2 yr old's ears; it seemed to happen overnight and the only problem was the sore on the back of her ear. I bought her a hypoallergenic pair of little hoop earrings so that the hole would not close, and the sore could heal w/out putting another backing on while it's healing. (I also cleaned it daily with the solution they gave me when she had her ears pierced). It healed pretty quickly and all is well! Good luck!

I think that when they are this young it can close up as soon as a week, so I would just keep it clean and use some antibiotic ointment and put it back in.

Hey! I have been piercing ears for 10 years(my daughter included). The best advice I give is to use piercing earrings for every day. I know that it is fun to put those cute little baby earrings in just as soon as the first six weeks is up, but for several reasons, the piercing earrings are just better. One, the back is lokcable....no falling off. Two, there is virtually no risk of allergy. Three, the gage is larger, so the hole stays wider. The baby earrings that you buy have a very fine gage, and the hole will close to fit that size. This causes problems when she tries to put a larger gage post in later years. The hole has to stretch, and will get sore and irritated, causing a scab,etc... You can purchase really cute piercing earrings at some of the independent beauty supplies. Sally Beauty has them, but they are usually more expensive. Try to find an independent ethnic beauty supply. You don't have to have a license, and the selection is usually really cute. Just tell them you want the ones that are put in the guns. Dip the ends in polysporin before pushing them through, and apply the polysporin to the backs before locking them on. They won't hurt her at all, and will allow the hole to heal. Just clean them and reapply poly periodically. My daughter is 11 and has worn these earrings since she was 18 months old. And finally, in answer to your question(haha!), it will close up quite fast, so you really should put the post back in if you want to preserve the piercing. Put polysporin on with it and it will heal just fine, with no pain. Good Luck!!

My daughter is allergic to nickel, so even now at 7 she gets this. I got her a pair of sterling silver earrings, they have them at Claire's. They aren't too expensive, and they have all different styles. She does much better with them, but not the backs. She still breaks out if we use the backs, so I either use the little plastic ones, or the hoops. Hoops work the best for healing, in my opinion. They can move, and breath, so that seems to help! Good luck!

I am a cosmetologist and I have done many ear piercing. I haven't pierced anyone this young, but that doesn't matter.
A lot of people are allergic to different type of metals. You might want to try non hypoallergenic earrings. Maybe even the type of earrings she was pierced with. I would get more of those and get the cleaning solution you get when you had the ears done. THEN I WOULD PUT THE EARRINGS BACK IN RIGHT AWAY SO THEY DON"T CLOSE. You don't want to go threw the piercing again for her sake.
