My 18 month daughter has had an ear infection every month this year. Her doctor is talking about ear tubes. Does anyone have any expereince with this? I am concerned about her going under for surgery. Are the tubes a HUGE hassle with bathing, swimming and such? Any information or advice is greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I have a friend who got Chiropractic treatments for her child and didn't need to get the ear tubes and no more issues with infections. She saw Dr. Hansen in Elk Grove. His number is ###-###-####. He has also adjusted my boy since he was 3 weeks old and my son has never had an ear infection. Good luck either way!

My 13 year old had tubes put in when she was about 9 months old and had no problems with any part of it at all. She didn't have another ear infection after that. She had her adnoids removed at the same time which I beieve is standard practice but did have to end up having that done again (they can grow back) when she had her tonsils removed in second grade (again no problems). I think I had more problems than she did. She was however quite upset that she couldn't have Dorrito's after her tonsilecomy. Anyway, the tubes fall out on their own as the child grows. My step daughter had it done recently as well and she's 12. She had no ill effects either. As far as water, we were careful anyway so we just continued to be. I hope this is helpful.

tubes were a godsend for us. the earaches stopped immediately and speech improved drastically. we have had no problems with bathing nor swimming. we'll start swim lessons this summer and i bought some plugs for him to wear so hopefully it won't be a problem. good luck.

My nephew had this done about 18 months ago (he is almost 4 now) and he went from not talking at all to having an amazing vocabulary almost over night! He is also much happier without the constant ear infections. He wears ear plugs for baths and swimming, but his mom (who is a dr.) has told us it's not a big deal if a plug falls out in the bath or pool - it's more of a precaution than an absolute necessity.

Good luck!

Hi there,

My son had ear tubes at 16 months. He started walking 3 days after that! The procedure was VERY quick and he was back to his normal self the next day. Some doctors are more strict than others when it comes to water. Ours said just not to dunk his head underwater, but that splashing in the tub or a pool would be fine. We never used ear plugs - and even had him in swimming lessons - no issues. He is now almost 3 1/2. He has had no problems whatsoever! At his three year old check up the doctor said the tubes were no longer in there-so they fell out at some point - not sure when. But again, he has had absolutely no problems. Another doctor we had seen while ours was out said that dunking the head is OK as long as it is clean water like a tub or pool, but not in a lake or pond. Good luck!

It is a very simple procedure and a huge relief to the children. The fluid on the ears may also cause distorted hearing which can affect proper speech and language development. So she is at the perfect age to have it done. Sometimes as children grow, the tubes will fall out, and they may need larger tubes if they continue to have an issue or they may grow out of it.

Best wishes :)

I don't know about ear tubes. I am aware that vitamin A and zinc help to fight infections. Vitamin A is in carrots for sure, and other vegetables. I don't know what zinc is in, but I am sure you can look it up on the internet.

Be careful that your beatiful baby doesn't lose hearing over this.

J.,

I had a friend whose daughter went through this same issue, but rather than getting tubes they had her adnoids removed and she hasn't had another infection. My friend did not want her daughter to have to go through multiple surgeries with the tubes being replaced. Check into an ear nose and throat dr that will discuss having the adnoids removed. It made a world of difference.

My son had this procedure done twice. Once at 4 years old and then again at 7 years old (he is now almost 11). We had no issues with this at all. The surgery is really quick. I believe he was only under for less than 20 minutes and the only complaint he had afterwards was that everything was so loud! He didn't have the fluid build up anymore so he could hear clearly again. It is a super small 'tube'. Like the size of a bead, so they can't feel it at all. It isn't a super pain while bathing or swimming, but you must remember to put the ear plugs in. Buy a couple sets in case one gets lost. It is painful when they get water in their ears and they really should not anyway. Kaiser sells a great set of ear plugs called Docs Pro Plugs which come in different sizes and are inexpensive. I believe you can just go to the pharmacy and purchase them. You don't have to be a member. My son even stopped wearing them in the shower after a year or so, but definitely can't do that while swimming. The tubes usually come out in a year of two on their own, which was the case the first time my son had it done. But he was getting fluid build up again (not as bad though), so we did the procedure again and actually still has one of the tubes in his ear and it has been over 3 years. I believe now the dr is going to take it out and it is looking like we don't need to do it again. The only complaint now my son has as he gets older is the swimming thing. He just doesn't want to think about making sure his ear plug(s) are in. There has only been one summer in the past 6 or 7 that he didn't need the ear plugs, so you think he would be used to it. :-)
Good Luck and rest easy. This is minor.

I know of children who have been helped with effective nutritional supplements who no longer needed to have the medical proceedure.

The products that I am refering to are from Symmetry Direct. There are multi vitamins she can take that will enhance her immune system and her own body will be more able to fight off the infection and even prevent the problem in the first place. Aloe Vera juice is a very important key for her healing. The products that would be good for her are:
Fruit-amins
--chewable multi vitamin (if she has enough teeth)
Future Star
--powder formula multi vitamin to mix in juice or water
Genesis
--100% juice (grape, pomagranate, aloe, apple & herbs)
Aloe Plus
--concentrated aloe drink (tastes yummy!)

All of these products taste great! You can check it out at www.symmetrydirect.com/dhendon

If you have to choose only one product, I would give Genesis the highest priority. Watch the 3 videos on my website and please call me with questions.

Hey, this is R.. My oldest son had miraculous results from this relatively non-invasive surgery. He could hear better on the way home- and had a surge in speech vocab and clarity. We had some ear plugs but it wasn't that huge of a deal. R
