Need some suggestions mamas. We still get our 14 yr old an Easter gift, not a basket, but a gift. We have two little ones that still get Easter baskets and dont want our oldest to feel left out. I bought her an ipod touch 4th generation this year (i know i went a little over board, but she is a good kid) and instead of leaving her gift at the front door like we would our little kids, i want to do like a scavenger hunt type of game for her. Do you think that would be a fun idea for her? I want to make it kind of fun. She has been saving up her babysitting money for an ipod touch, but still has about $100.00 to go, so my hb and i just decided to get one for her for Easter. What do you think?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Oh, some of you have me rolling! Kade S, i love love love your idea! I am going to use that line to start out with! Awesome! I know, i probably should let her finish saving up, but she has been constantly saying "mom, do you know anyone that needs a sitter, i need to make some more money"... or she will say "i need to find someone who needs a sitter, because i still have a 100 bucks to go so i can get my ipod"... she has been saving up for at least 3 months now. I dont mean to steal her thunder, but my mama instincts are coming out and i want to make her happy. she really is a good kid! thank you all for the awesome feed back and awesome ideas! have a wonderful day mamas!

My kids would love you. I think that since she is actually saving up, it is a great way to reward her. She can use her money for accessories (a good cover so it does not get banged up-so easy to do-and itunes cards to buy music, more earphones etc). One of my girls walked a neighbor's dog to earn money and helped dad a lot so he gave her extra money. She bought her own. I still make bags for mine, 13 yrs old, and baskets for the little ones. I include some candy, a couple little things. My dd with the IPod will get an Itunes card so she can "buy" tunes, animation, text etc. The other will get perfume, and my son is getting legos. I think maybe a hunt with little papers tucked into plastic eggs telling her where to look next including a piece of candy could be fun for her. I plan to do this with mine this year while my little one has an egg hunt. They can hunt for their bags of goodies. I wonder how hard it will be. I need to start thinking of riddles.

I would return the iPod if possible, and do this instead (since she's been saving up - you don't want to negate all the hard work she's done to save, which is so remarkable):

Buy some iPod accessories for the particular model she wants, like a screen protector, ear-bud type headphones, a protective and cool case, and some iTunes gift cards. Hide them around the house, and leave clues. Of course, she'll be excited, but disappointed since she still hasn't earned enough money to buy the actual iPod.

So, make your final clue and gift the last $100 that she needs to purchase it, and write a nice note telling her how proud you are of her hard work and good money management.

How fun! She'll love it. For our 11yo DD, we do this: we put a clue on a card, something like "so glad you're up, you sleepy head, wonder what you'll find, under your ______" she'll figure out bed and look under there, where she'll find another card with another clue. We do maybe 6 or 7 clues, that ultimately lead to the gift. She loves it. Have a great Easter!

Sounds perfect..

Also may I add, I remember the Easter, that no Easter Bunny came to our house. When we asked our mom she said. "I thought you 2 were too old for Easter Bunny".. We were stunned. We said, no we still loved the Easter Bunny, hunting for eggs, etc..

She answered us, Well if the 2 of you are not too old, Then neither am I!
I want the Easter Bunny to visit me too!

And so from then on.. we made sure our mom got Easter treats, Christmas Stockings etc..It was so fun! Before this, she had filled her own Christmas Stocking.

On one hand, that's a great and thoughtful idea. On the other hand, you may be sort of stealing her thunder. Sounds like she's working hard to save, and then just giving it to her sort of defeats the purpose. I think all teens should experience the thrill of working hard to save and then finally getting the payoff they have been working towards. It teaches a lesson that you can't find in an easter basket. Just a thought.

But, all logic aside, I don't know if I'd be able to resist giving her what her heart desires most either. And a scavenger hunt is a good idea.

how old are the two little ones? Im just wondering if you could get them all involved in the scavenger hunt?

If not then yes I would do it for her! It makes it fun and let her work for her gift a little ;)

It does get her more involved with the day and the activites so its not all about the younger ones. It shows you put some thought into it for her also.

Have fun!

I also love Elena's idea! She's really worked hard for her ipod and the last $100.00 coming from you is such a sweet gesture!

My kid's are 12 and 16 and we still hide candy and gifts. It just makes it a fun day that everyone looks forward to!

I'd hide it and make her have a different style of Easter Egg and build up clues for her to find it. You can also get a big egg shape container at Michael's and have the actual iPod be in that as her final egg to find. I would tell her that you recognize her hard work and are impressed with all she's saved so far, so put that $ in the bank and here's the ipod.

I have to agree with Elena B :) That is a great idea, doesn't negate her hard work, and will teach her the value of money even more. AND still rewards her for trying so hard on her own to get that IPod.

Edited to add: My kids are 13, 16 and 18 (and will be 14,17 and 19 within the next couple of months) and I still hide their easter baskets and the hubby's easter basket and make them search for them :) we still do colored eggs and egg hunts too :) (last year being the exception since I was still recovering from a broken ankle).
