My son has Autisum (high end of the spectrum) and constantly is eating all day long. He eats on the average every two hours. And I don't mean small meals. He is much taller than the average six year old (he looks like he is eight years old). He is in the First grade. He is not fat by any means his weight is 58 pounds. The doctor said he is off the chart for his height. He wears size 8 in jeans and a size 3 shoe. How can I get him to stop eating so much? It's like the food is a substitute or crutch for something he is missing or lacking.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I would like to thank everyone for thier advice. I now make sure my son eats healthy food and snacks. The Doctor said he was fine and there was nothing for me to worry about.

If he is not fat, he may just need the extra calories to sustain his growth. Generally at 6 yrs old they eat according to what their bodies tell them that they need. Just make sure that you have lots of healthy choices for him to eat, and make sure he is playing (with you, or a friend) so that he's not eating out of boredom. My six year old in Las Vegas has friends come over. Even though it's hot, they do play out side for short 10-20 minute spells. I just make sure they have lots of water outside with them.

My son is 5 and he's about the same, 8-10 in clothes and 2.5 in shoes. He's a little over 4 ft. and looks like a 7 yr old. He'll be starting kindergarden this coming yr. No autism though, but he eats alot through out the day too. There must be a black hole in his tummy. But I find that it's pretty normal. I just can't imagine how much he's going to be eating as he gets older.

Hi, K.,

I know it's rather late to respond, but I have been in and out of town and the country all summer. I wanted to share on this topic.

My sister has a son (Logan Paul) with autism. Logan Paul is turning 8 years old on August 23rd. He has always been big for his age. He was 9 lb 10 oz at birth! My sister has shared that Logan Paul eats constantly, too. He mostly eats out of bordom, so when it is not meal time or snack time, and he is asking for food or a drink, she must redirect him to another activity. When it is meal time or snack time, they have to monitor what he can eat, as he has some food allergies and food issues as well.

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but just wanted to share in case it is helpful. If you want to discuss it further, please feel free to contact me. I can pass your info on to my sister also, as she is always happy to share.

Hello K.,

Have you thought of trying Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine?
I am an Oriental Medicine Doctore practicing in Las Vegas and know that Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine can be very effective in treating Childhood diseases. I also specialize in Pediatric Acupuncture.
Your child is overeating due to imbalances in the body system, and acupuncture and herbal medicine can restore the balance, so that the body does not overeat.
If you are squeemish about the thought of needles, I also use an Electro-stimulator machine to stimulate the Acupuncture points so that no needles are used. Having said that, I have used very thin needles to treat a 5 year old, with good success.
If you are in Las Vegas and would like more information, I can be reached at:
