I am looking for Healthy recipes. I just found out my cholesterol as well as my husband and younger daughters cholesteral are all high. I am not very creative and get tired of eating the same things over and over again.... Can anyone help with any healthy suggestions. Suggestions for healthy nighttime snacks. Thanks!

First I want to congratulate you on decided to eat more healthy!!! I can tell you really care and love your family to be willing to try new reciepes for health benefit.
Here are my suggestions:Eat as many apples, bananas, and carrots as you want. They are all known to help lower cholesteral. When you cook rather than any other oil, use OLIVE oil only for the same reason. As far as snacks, Almonds are the best one (I read one study that says it reduced cholesterol levels by 16% in 4 weeks). Low fat cottage cheese is always a good option too. Things to avoid for High Cholesterol are: cake, candy, carbonated drinks, coffee, refined food, tobacco, white bread, margarine. If you send me your email I will send you a few recipes that I use around here. This change will take time, but I think really worth the effort.
www.allrecipes.com on the right side menu click on "more collections" and then scroll down to "healthy living" and there is a low cal and a low collesterol section. They are user submited and tested by the site, and you also get to rate it or see what other people may have done to improve on the recipe. You can save your favorites to an online recipe book or submit one of your own. You can even take pictures and post them. I like that they test the recipes. :) Happy cooking!
my husband had such high cholesterol they couldnt even measure it when he first got tested. all we did was substitute ground turkey for any dishes that called for ground beef like tater-tot casserole(in a 13X9 pan layer browned meet then 1 can cream of mushroom soup undiluted it can be kinda hard to spread but will smoosh out as it cooks, next comes cheese slices and on top neatly lay tater tots, cook at the temp and time the bag says to cook the tots it is so so good), we have turkey sloppy joe, we even eat turkey burgers. another thing we did was to start cooking with fish, even just brushing it with butter (low fat stuff) and some lemon pepper broil for just a little bit, its so good, we got a lot of recipies by googling recipies for low cholesterol. good luck! remember the more animal fat you can remove from your diet the better try not to eat red meat or pork at all, the more vegis you can bring in the better! also the almonds helped us ALOT- we ate almonds every day for snacks, and we got his levels down to a point that he dosent have to go on medication! yea!!
Hi D., my husband and I had high bad cholesterol. so we started cooking with olive oil instead of any oils. when it comes to anything that calls for oil.then we found a book called American heart association fighting heart disease and stroke cookbook.and its got so many great recipes and we could not believe how fast our cholesteral dropped. they have deserts, snacks,breads, and we also switched from eating red meats to turkey sausage for meat loaves and hamburgers, ect. but my husband once in a while will have a steak. but because i am so use to the turkey now i can't even stand the smell or taste of red meats. and we eat fish.but try this book it is really good it has over 600 recipes. good luck.
I have high blood pressure and have to watch what I eat. We do a lot of substitutions in our recipes. We never add extra salt, when a baking recipe calls for butter or oil I use apple sauce instead. We eat lean meats and use turkey bacon and sausage. All the dairy products we buy are low or non fat. We always have lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to snack on. All bread products in our home a whole grain. We drink water with every meal. I have learned a lot about what I can and can not eat on the Web MD site. We read the label of every food product we buy. At first it would take us like three hours to shop, but now we know what we can and can not have. There are lots of healthy choices out there and even stores that carry only health foods. I think it can be hard sometimes in our drive-through word to eat healthy, but it can be done. Hope this helps and good luck.
I found a good book, "Quick Meals for Healthy Kids and Busy Parents." I found it on Amazon. Also, my son used to eat broccoli like nobody's business but then he suddenly stopped. I got him to eat it again by pureeing it and mixing it with gralic mashed potatoes. I also often make sweet potato fries (since he loves ketchup). It would be good to get the kids involved (since they are old enough) have them research nutrition and health eating. Tell them you don't know enough and they need to become the "Experts". Kids, especially teenagers love knowing things their parents don't. Work that to your advantage. Have them come up with menus that they can prepare. Make a game when you go to the store of reading labels and trying to find the healthiest selections. Good Luck!
