Eating Patterns... Does This Seem Right for a 9 1/2 Month Old?

My 'babies' are now 7 and 5, so it's been a while and I've forgotten.

My 9 1/2 month old is a VERY healthy eater. We're still working out a solid routine, but I'm aiming for (and he's doing well with) an 8 oz bottle when he first wakes up, 'breakfast' (either oatmeal, fruit, or both), a 6-8 oz bottle before morning naptime, 'lunch' (pasta, chicken, fruits, veggies... anything goes), snacks (little crunchies, crackers, finger foods), another 6-9 oz bottle before his afternoon nap, snacks, 'dinner' (pretty much the same stuff as lunch, plus anything on MY plate for dinner), then an 8 oz bottle before bed. He sometimes also snacks between dinner and that last bottle.

Does this seem right? The bottle-to-food ratio, is this about where he should be? He has no problem's with his weight, like I said, he's a healthy little eater, I just want to make sure he's getting enough of what he should be :)

What can I do next?

My son has 3 meals, usually no snacks and about 5/6oz bottles per day. I think you are supposed to aim for between 24 and 32 oz until the age of one. It sounds like he is getting that. If he doesn't have a bottle right after lunch or dinner though, I might let him play with a sippy or straw cup of water just to help get that food moving and also so he get the feel of it - granted you don't want him to drink a lot of water and not want his bottle later.

I think it sounds like you're doing a great job! Congrats on the good eater! Be sure to ask his pediatrician at the one year appointment about how much milk he or she recommends as they transition more to table food. Keep up the good work!

Sounds like he's getting plenty. My son just turned 10 months and eats just about the same as your son except his bottles are 6 oz bottles.

I would add another 2 bottles in the mix. 5-6 a day. otherwise you just have a healthy baby.

We just had my sons 9 month appointment yesterday, and she said he should be getting about 16 oz of formula/breastmilk a day. My son eats just what we do for breakfast lunch and dinner, and then his "snacks" are usually a nursing session. It looks to me like your son is getting a lot of formula, but if he's not getting too big and your Dr knows how much he's drinking and is happy then to each his own. Each baby is so different!

I've exclusively breastfed my three younger ones for the first 12 months (youngest still 6 months old.) My oldest, who's 17, weaned himself when he was 9 months old and I was just giving him regular food only. All my kids are healthy. =) Your schedule seems GREAT to me!! =) You're kind of in the middle of what I've done with my 5 kids and he seems like a good healthy eater. Congratulations!!

It sounds good to me. If he's eating when he's hungry and stopping when he's not--that's a good sign!
