I need glasses to see the tv and drive at night. My prescription is a couple years old and I need new ones. But I'm cheap, thrifty, miserly, broke! Where do you go and how much does it cost?

What can I do next?

HEB here in Austin now has an Eye exam place I think the exam for glasses is $49.

And then you can order eye glasses on line from

www.zenni.com

Glasses starting at $19.99

Not sure about the exam but Payless Optical on Hulen in FW has glasses starting at $39 for the frames & lenses. Great frames. I went in there looking thinking they were going to be the horrible oversized plastic frames and they were very stylish and nice metal, rimless, some plastic, current style frames. Worth checking into.

I'm not sure about the exam because ours is covered under insurance, but try www.zennioptical.com for glasses. Very inexpensive! I got a backup pair for my son from there and while I had to wait for it to be shipped, it was a great choice for an inexpensive pair. He is 3 and broke his first pair, so I didn't want to keep shelling out tons of money for glasses that may not last long. :-/

Good luck!

I got an eye exam and two very nice pairs of glasses from Walmart, for about $300 (one of the pairs was prescription sunglasses - nice too). To me that seemed like a pretty good deal compared to the chain eye places.

I used our HSA to help pay for it.

Good luck.

If you have America's Best Contacts & Eyeglasses in your area (http://www.twopair.com/save-money/eyecare-club/), they have a deal in which you join their "club" & pay 99 bucks for 3 years worth of eye exams. I don't think you'd find a better deal than that.

I don't buy my glasses in store anymore, it's a rip off. You can also order full glasses (frames & lenses) online, the same ones you'd find a store for hundreds of dollars, for under $30 bucks. I have used www.zennioptical.com, www.goggles4u.com, and www.coastalcontacts.com. I have been happy with all 3 companies, from ordering, to shipping, to the product. They've all been great & I've had no issues with vision, headaches, etc.

Costco and Wal-Mart are the most inexpensive places where I live for eye exams (around $70), and Wal-Mart has some crazy cheap options for glasses, the have frames starting at like $20.

If your prescription is really minimal, can you get away with those glasses that they sell at CVS/Rite Aid, etc??

And not sure if you can wear contacts, but if you can, ask your eye doctor for rebates on the contact lenses.

Costco and Sams do eye exams. Not too bad price wise. Can't remember exactly because I don't have glasses but my kids do.

Oh so you don't think I am the worst mom on earth they are adults they just use my Costco card.
