Have you tried Elidel? When my son was a baby, his doctor gave us some sample tubes of Elidel, and it always cleared up the spots.

I recently took my 10m old baby in for spots that the doc says is Eczema. He told me to use Cortizone 10. He also told me that this will come back. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
I'm not sure what you've already tried and different people react differently to different ointments, medicines etc. I found Aquaous Cream to be very soothing when a "flare up" occurs. Also try to keep a journal of what he's eaten or been in contact with on his worse days and try eliminate one of them at the time to try and identify the "culprit". As one mom to another, I feel your pain! Good luck!!
You might wish to try a tube of a natural (homeopathic/herbal) cream called Florasone that is available in health food stores, and wellness/nutrition sections of larger stores. I don't have eczema, but read a number of reviews before trying this for other skin irritations, and some users maintained that it did a wonderful job healing their eczema. For me, it's almost always soothing, and works much faster than cortisone creams for just about any kind of itch, which I get often because I have sensitive skin and lots of allergies.
Another herb that is soothing and healing is calendula, which is made into a variety of creams and salves. Very nice stuff.
Both of these do have their own particular botanical smells, but I don't find them offensive, and they tend to dissipate fairly quickly after application.
Good luck finding a helpful product. Stinging rashes are no fun.
Ask your pediatrician but I believe aquaphor or Eurecin helps with eczema.
Best wishes,
mb
My son and I both have ecxema. I used Eucerin lotions and creams on him when he was little - its really thick and non-allergenic. For myself when i get a flare up I use 1% hydrocortisone cream (over the counter).
I find that making sure we stay mosturised helps. Also use glycerin soaps or neutrigina soaps
I've been using Desoximetasone cream and/or ointment for years. It works just fine on me and it doesn't sting or burn when I put it on. I do find that the ointment seems to work better than the cream. Hope this helps. T.
This may sound old fashioned, but, try having him take cod liver oil for a couple weeks. If it helps- great! Cuz its good for so many things. Not sure if he can take a capsule but you could get liquid and put it in something very yummy and have hime take it. Hope it helps. Best to get to it from the inside out if you can. Avoiding all those creams and hassle. And costly scripts.
I have a friend whose daughter has eczema since she was a baby. She is almost six years old. Her eczema has become increasingly worse. My friend had heard from several people to take her daughter off of dairy. She had been hearing this for well over a year. Well, after much skepticism she finally decided to have her daughter follow a dairy free diet. This has been hard since the whole family loves their cheese, milk, yogurt, etc. But, within a couple of weeks her eczema was gone! It is amazing. There are many dairy free options out there. I even made coconut milk ice - cream for my son's party so my friend's daughter wouldn't feel left out.
I used to have eczema but thankfully something changed after I had children, and I hardly ever suffer from it now. I have noticed that I still get brakeouts though when I am extremely stressed. When the skin is dry it can get cracked and to get rid of this, I use coconut oil. It is wonderful stuff. It certainly won't hurt him to try it. It even makes your hair shiny and healthy and it smells really nice. Anything natural is better than the meds.
Good luck,
N
well i have it and it never really stays away. different things may trigger an outbreak. what i did recently is to put a lotion on and try not to scratch.. i wasn't aware that i had it till my teenage years.
For our little one we had to change her diet. Maybe check with an allergist to see what he's allergic to, also we use aquaphor and hydrocortisone...when its really bad (rarely now) we use desonide and benadryl to stop the intense itching and redness. Unfortunately until all that kicks it, they scratch horribly. So we also use scratchmenots to prevent her from damaging her skin further.
An allergist will really help pinpoint if the cause of the eczema could be triggered by food or environment.
First of all he probably is allergic to foods, etc. I would go to a local herb store and see if they have any vitamins that you could give him to detox from the steriods. Steriods will cause his immune system to get really weak. Then I would do a trial and error to try determine what he is allergic to.
One thing to avoid is sugar in all forms. I know of a natural baby diaper rash cream and a skin conditioning oil that is really good for eczema. If you want to know more email me at ____@____.com
I absolutely empathize with your situation. My daughter had it bad as an infant but she has pretty much outgrown it. From my own experience keeping your child's skin hydrated constantly helps. I also posted a question about this here's the link http://www.mamapedia.com/questions/5238082951933198337.
But as someone suggested seeing a dermatologist will help greatly.
If you haven't already, you might want to consider having him tested for allergies. My daughter had severe eczema from age 9mo to 5yo, and she was on a very restrictive diet. Any time she came in contact with an allergen, she had a reaction. She's also really allergic to dust mites, so washing her bedding regularly was a necessity. She still has break outs, but they are not nearly as bad as they were when she was younger, and my doctor credits this to the fact that we kept her as allergen free as possible when she was little.
Eucerin and vaseline were the best products for her (every child is different, her skin would not tolerate anything herbal or with essential oils), as well as a topical steroid ointment prescribed by our doctor. She also took an oral antihistamine, which helped her to stop itching and scratching the areas affected. Also, you might want to have him seen by a dermatologist who is better schooled in treatments for this.
Hi K.
i know how it feels my nephew has gone thru the same, as we immediately switched from the pediatrician to a homeopathy doctor, it worked wonders.
try it out there are no side effects and it really works, find out any good homeopathy clinic in your area and take him there,
and yes coconut oil is very good, it wont burn and has a cooling effect.
take care.
Try oatmeal baths. My sister has had Eczema her whole life, she's had creams and stuff too but the only thing that would stop the itching and burning was oatmeal bath and a certain type of cream I can't think of right now. Hope that helps.
Our daughter is the same as your son. She's 10 now and her eczema has never gone away. It is a daily routine for us to keep managed. If everyday we put Lubriderm lotion on her (no other lotions work as well so the cost is worth it) and then top any little rashy spots off with a prescription CREAM from her pediatrician. The ointment kind in this same brand never worked as well as us being able to fully rub in the cream type. I don't have it with me right now but if you want the name, send me a note. If we do these things, it will nearly go completely away. If we miss a day (just one) you can tell a difference.
Emu oil is supposed to be really good it actually helps new skin cells to grow. They are using it on burn victims right now and they are amazed at the results. My best friends mom is a holistic healer and she swears by this we will use on it my son in the winter if eczema comes back. She also told me to cut certin foods out of his diet like tomatoes he would eat them likes grapes and that seems to have helped also. He is looking really good at the moment.
My 2 year old has it really bad too!!
We have tried everything...2% Hydrocortizone and Pruvel (prescriptions)...Aveeno dry skin, California Baby with Calendula flower extract, Avacado oil, etc...
I am going to try coconut oil. I have never heard of using that until just now. One thing that seems to help a bit for us is Bio-Oil. It is at any pharmacy or Wal-Mart. It keeps his skin moisterized for a bit longer that anything else. Also, limit the baths that he has. We give ours a bath only 2-3 times a week during the summer, once a week when it is cold outside. And a cool mist humidifier in his room should keep the air in the bedroom moist. Especially now that Fall is coming, with Winter not far behind. The air in most homes during the winter is so drying to the skin...Good Luck.
my son has it too. it got so bad once that it looked like his whole body was covered in a rash.
not sure what his doctor told you to do for his case. my son's doctor told us to only bathe him 3-4 times a week. i do mon, wed, fri. extra baths only if he's really dirty or stinky. sun exposure and sunscreen can really irritate eczema, also, so go in the sun sparingly, or wear protective clothes so you don't have to cover his whole body with sunscreen. and always wash the sunscreen off when he's done. (don't avoid sunscreen altogether. whenever in the sun, ALWAYS wear sunscreen to protect his skin.)
also in the bath, don't use soaps or lotions with fragrance. i used to use johnson's bedtime wash and lotion, and that made my son's eczema 100 times worse!
i use unscented aveeno wash/shampoo, and i just wash his hair and use the soap from that to gently wash him up.
after bath time or swimming, we have to lather him in lotion. we use Rite Aid brand skin cream that comes in a tub. it's for sensitive skin and fragrance free. his doctor also said that a cheaper and effective solution is vaseline. put it on him after bath and everynight before bed.
(i put it on at least 30 mins before bed so it can soak in then put his jammies on. otherwise it becomes hard for him to sleep).
when rashes do flare up, put Hydrocortisone Ointment, 2.5% on the affected area once in the morning until it goes away. You can repeat this as his eczema returns. Remember to check with your son's doctor to make sure it is okay for him. this is just what i was told to do for my 19 month old.
good luck to you! =)
Ayurvedic (herbal, natoropathic) system of medicine is very effective for the treatment of eczema related skin disorders. It is the blending of herbal, natureopathic medicinal plants and making of oil out of this. It will not have any side effects. The Ayurvedic Nursing home and research centre at Kottakkal (Kerala, India) is very famous for this treatment. If you want, i shall check up with Ayurvedic doctors here and let you know the medicines that can be applied. Eczema isn't a skin condition, it lives internally, in the colon. Its a fungus that needs to be treated from the inside out. You need to figure out what the problem is, what his body is reacting to. Dairy protein, soy, casein/wheat/gluten are the major ones that people react to. Most people cannot digest dairy.
Medicines and creams won't help, you need to CURE it from the INSIDE OUT, not just put a cream on it and hope for the best. It won't work. Avoid hydrocortizone, it is linked to eye cataracts, and it weakens the skin over time making it more susceptable to breaking out.
First off, find the problem. Eliminate dairy for 2-3wks (read labels, its sneaky!) and start him on a good probiotic. You can find strawberry chewable wafers at the grocery store, health foods store, etc. Acidophilus is a probiotic, it will replace the bad bacteria in his system with good. Get some tea tree oil and put a couple drops in a bowl or sink of warm water, and put a washcloth in to it and put the wet washcloth over the itchy area.
Use cream, but never put cream on any spot of skin that is crusty, broken open, bleeding, or oozing. These spots need to dry out. IF they are itchy use the tea tree oil, but never put cream on spots that are open, bleeding, oozing or very red, it will make it worse and not allow it to heal.
True eczema (not just dry skin) is a fungus that can't be healed by creams because its not a skin condition. you need to find his trigger and eliminate it.
My 8yr old has severe eczema and psoriasis. His is triggered by dairy and his skin will literally fall off in chunks, bleed, crack and ooze. This is with a few licks of an ice cream cone or some milk on his cereal. If we don't follow his routine of bathing daily (to slough off old dead skin cells), taking acidophilus, fish oils, and avoiding dairy the child is in pain.
You need to find what the problem is and solve it, don't just mask it with creams.
