Eczema (Sugar Olive Oil Paste)

My 6 month old suffers from severe eczema that is triggered by food allergies. I have applied olive oil to help mosterize her skin after an ok from her pediatrian and it helps her a bit. I often mosterize my own skin by applying sugar and olive oil soaking it on my hands and feet for about 10 minutes then rinsing. I was wondering if anyone has tried this for eczema. I didn't want to try it on her without asking anyone first. It leaves my skin feeling clean and silky smooth. I am worried she may possibly have a reaction to the sugar or the coarse sugar may be too rough on her delicate skin. But if does work it would be great for me to try on her.

So What Happened?

Is there anyway I can respond without filling in the so what happened box? I am new to mamapedia. I came home from work yesterday and found my poor little girl covered in blood from all the scratching. I started to scream I was so upset. The sitter was outside with my 3 year old for 10 minutes and left her asleep in her crib. I bathed her and applied antibiotic ointment. She is an early teether. She has 2 bottom teeth and her 2 top teeth already and now her to top side teeth are coming in. I discovered this yesterday because her scratching was crazy yesterday around her ears and cheeks so I looked in her mouth. I was exclusively beastfeeding her for 4 months and when I went back to work introduced some formula. Since she has so many allergies I weaned her recently at 6 months old and put her on elecare formula. I wanted to control her eczema. I was disappointed about weaning her so soon but I felt like I had to. I couldn't wait to do elimination diet to see an improvement on her skin. I am praying for a miracle.

My son at about 4 months had horrible eczema and I was told by a family friend to use goat milk soap ... i thought eww gross but it did not stink and it worked great!!! His skin improved almost immediately after we started to use the goat milk soap. I also applied NIVEA lotion (in a little white container) instead of regular baby lotion, etc. We have not had a problem with his skin since then....

Hi H.,

I shop from a company called Melaleuca that has awesome products for eczema. There is a lotion called Renew that works awesome for eczema!
It is not greasy but holds in the moisture to keep the skin feeling soft and it heals. They also have great laundry products that would be gentle on you little one's skin.

If you want information on the company, please feel free to contact me.

I have never used the olive oil/sugar for a baby, but I use it for myself. I have extremely sensitive, overly dry skin, with patches of exzema. I use brown sugar and olive oil as a facial scrub too. It is the only thing that does not cause my sensitive skin to break out in itchy bumps. I like brown sugar, because with the molasses content it is pretty soft and breaks down fairly quickly and is not too rough on the skin.

I've tried olive oil and it helps my son's ezcema (actually, it pretty much healed his "cradle cap"). It seems to sooth his skin more than the lotions I've tried but it only lasts for a few hours and then he's flaky and itchy again. Not a miracle solution but it's worth trying. Anyway, I wanted to suggest, since you asked, that you stay away from using the oil and sugar combo. It works well for you because the sugar exfoliates your skin but you DON'T want to exfoliate his ezcema. Just let the skin fall away when it's ready.

Just know you're not alone. His incessant itching breaks my heart - I'd be willing to try anything also. Good luck.

My 5 year old daughter has had eczema since she was about 6 months old. Try Calendula lotion/gel/ or cream on her. it is great for iritated skin and is a natural alternative to cortezone creams which can have long term effects on kids. it is also great for daiper rash and bug bites.

HI
SUGAR AND OLIVE OIL ARE GREAT TO EXFOLIATE BUT IT DOES NO SOLVE THE CAUSE. MY OWN SON HAD THE SAME AS A RESULT OF VACCINATIONS(SEE WWW.NATURALNEWS.COM). I KEPT HIS DIET TOXIN FREE AND GAVE HIM GLYCONUTRIENTS, MULTI VIT AND OMEGA 3 OIL AND SINCE THEN HIS BODY RESTORED ITSELF. YOU CAN GET IT FROM http://www.mannapages.com/healthierways

Hi H.,

My daughter is 2 and she also has Eczema. Our Ped. recommened not using Johnson and Johnson Baby Soap. It really dries our the skin and is not good for children with Eczema. She told us to switch to Dove soap and to put Aquaphor (concentrated ointment) to her skin at diaper changes. It really made a difference. Her Eczema doesn't sound as bad as your little ones but it's worth a try. Aquaphor is on the expensive side but a little goes a long way! Good Luck!

my daughter who is now a year started having bad eczema at 2 months old. It was so bad that her skin was cracked everywhere because it was so dry. We had to keep her covered from hear to toe and she was born in May- she wore a hat all summer because her head was horrible. She was also constantly getting sick. She saw a great dermatologist at columbia who my other children have seen. They did immune system testing, zinc testing, and allergy testing. She was allergic to everything (wheat, milk, milk protein, eggs, hazelnuts, squash) except soy so I cut everything out of my diet- I lived on fruit, meat or chicken, rice, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. It was not easy but she would not take a bottle so I had to nurse her. The diet did not help, her skin did not clear up. They gave her prescription creams. I was putting on 8 different creams 2-4 times a day. The allergist recommended a cream from Israel called Clear Cream a pharmacy in Brooklyn carries it. It works amazingly well. 3 days later her skin was clear. You apply twice a day and it really works so well. It is also only natural products. On my daughter's head we used mineral oil and then we would comb it to get the cradle cap off and put on the cream there. good luck!

No matter what remedy you get to sooth the skin, eczema is still a pain. Does your doctor give you a list of all the possible foods? Have your tried an elimination diet? Both my girls have had eczema and I refused to accept it as a fact of life. When I eliminated all the culprits (for us) - strawberries, corn, soy, citrus - the eczema went away completely. To this day, my 5 year old with get an eczema patch if she eats anything with a hint of strawberry flavor. Acquaphor is the best remedy for her, but I would rather eliminate certain foods than cope with eczema which leaves scars on the skin. I wish you the best of luck.

Get some acidophilus for her. Buy the break open caplets and put the powder right on her tongue, or you can put it into her food (applesauce works great for that). Acidophilus is a probiotic, and eczema is a fungus that lives in the colon. The acidophilus replaces the bad bacteria with good, and therefore fights off the eczema in the colon.
My oldest has severe eczema and psoriasis. His skin would boil, bleed, fall off, crust over, and cause him great pain. He now takes a daily multivitamin, acidophilus, and fish oil supplements. Since he started this, his skin hasn't broken open. his eczema is triggered by dairy protein.
